The making of marks is the fundamental building block of all artwork from the first handprints on cave walls to the strokes of paint that created Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Mark making is the beginning exploration in a work of art all the way through to the last finishing touches. You are invited to spend the day exploring the rich complexity of mark making. You will explore mark making techniques through fun exercises and unusual tools. In this process, you will start to develop your own vocabulary of marks while building a collection of unique collage material. You will learn how to use the building blocks of mark making to create a completed work of art rich with texture. You will be exploring a WIDE range of techniques for making marks. Some familiar and some unconventional. Besides the usual materials for marks, you will explore using stitches, collage, staplers, and goose feathers as nontraditional methods for making marks. The marks learned can be incorporated into collage, visual journaling, more traditional drawing or painting, and fiber art.

I call this The Abundant Book because I celebrate all the beauty I have collected over the years. My love for vintage fabric and papers made me want to put all this goodness together into a book that will be a treasure and add to my beautiful collection of meaningful objects I can get visual pleasure and inspiration from. In this class we will be making a 3 signature art book (9.5" x 6") We will create the pages using a variety of techniques-dyeing, fabric patchworking, collage on paper. We will gather a collection of vintage ephemera to fill in the book pages as well. There are demonstrations on my particular way to collage and paint. Taking these collages a step further by dipping them into dye baths. I demonstrate image transfers, several embroidery stitches which create beautiful mark making, wire work, stitching a patchwork, layering borders and bundles with complexity as well as simplicity. It all comes together as we gather our pages into signatures and sew those signatures to create a beautiful intriguing book. Supplies Needed to bring for Class:

In this workshop students will learn how to create four different style beads using vintage new/old stock bottle caps. Using a metal Disc Cutter, and Dapping block we will transform ordinary metal bottle caps into unique beads. A bangle bracelet kit will be added for students to display their finished beads. This is a well-being-focused workshop. The day will be divided into 4 sections. In each section we will consider life’s inflection points through reflection and sharing then art exploration. We will begin each section with brief meditation and grounding then explore a poem or quote to focus on the theme. After a demonstration of art response ideas and techniques, there will be time for personal reflection and a creative art response. The guided art response gives lots of space for individual creativity and originality to suit each participant’s style, background, and experience. The section will close with sharing for anyone who chooses to. The day is divided into four 90 min sections each with its own art reflection. The art responses are designed for all skill levels and are intended as an entry to an ongoing art journaling journey. Why art journaling? I believe that using different pathways through art and poetry can help us crack open parts of ourselves that we have let lay dormant or unexamined. Art can get at feelings that are sometimes out of reach of words and gives a new modality of expression and exploration. I will be your guide for this art journaling experience. What does it mean to create a painting that is informed by the natural world around us, but is not exactly representational? The difference between representational painting and abstract painting is that in abstract work, the subject is not as evident. Working with acrylic paints, students will be encouraged to let go of object orientation and see the landscape simply as shapes, colors and values. This workshop explores abstraction, composition, color and mark making, through the lens of landscape Students will learn how to coax hints of reality from an abstract background and perhaps how to integrate some textural and/or collage materials. Discover the wonder and beauty of Nature’s Palette through playful experimentation. Trish’s newest Nature’s Palette paintings have evolved into a collection she calls “Forest Bathing” and this new class will introduce how she intertwines words with nature. Students will learn some of her newest techniques on how to create texture and pattern in my backgrounds. They will discover the glories of nature’s palette as they implement nature into pours of acrylic ink-like paint. Leaves, grass, twigs, plants, stencils, mark-making and collage will then be used in creative ways to design a painting. Elements of design and drawing will be focused on to create a work of art. Take a walk on the dark side and join a Día de los Muertos (Day of the dead) celebration with the Black Sheep Artist! Observed annually throughout Mexico (and many other places too). This macabre holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support them on their spiritual journey. The unique food, activities, and art that surrounds the celebration is simply astonishing and I am totally inspired and enthralled by all of it! Drawing inspiration from the rich and colorful traditions of the holiday, as well as a bit of so-called "Goth" style, we will transform a "thrift store rescue” porcelain doll into a beautiful tribute to those who have gone before us. Join artist Micah Goguen as we take your favorite portrait and layer, embellish and adorn with layers of mixed media. This goof proof portrait class won’t require you to draw a portrait to get a stunning result. We will learn how to apply the layers in an order that showcases the property of each media. We will be learning aspect of collage, tinting with fluid acrylics, application with palette knife, stenciling and drawing with dry media. Are you interested in portraiture but feeling intimidated? This is a great class to explore your creative abilities using layering techniques and mixed media application. Particpants will use the image of their choice printed full sheet on copy paper. You can email the image of your choice to micahgoguenart@gmail.com and Micah will print a simplified copy prior to the workshop. We will outline the image on Grafix Duralar Film which acts as a transparency, so no drawing skills are necessary. The student will use Marabu sketch markers to colorize and create stunning visual effects. The Instructor will guide the students to use acrylics to block in and layer image after using the sketch markers. Students may opt to select no image and pursue the process as an abstract. Each student will take home a set of Marabu markers and a completed project. Recently, the Gelli plate has most commonly been used to create collage papers. I want to invite you to rethink the Gelli plate as a tool for creating completed work of arts. Monoprinting has a very rich history in the art world. Did you know that Gauguin, Picasso, and Degas used their equivalent of a Gelli Plate to create masterpieces? We are very lucky to have the technology of the modern Gelli plate because it allows us to create monoprints without an expensive printing press and toxic inks right in our homes. I am going to share with you the unique techniques and esthetics that I bring to Gelli printing. Texture and grunge are at the base of all my work. I have spent many hours experimenting in order to recreate the look of peeling paint and ancient textures. Your first day will be exploring and experimenting with a huge range of techniques. You will be creating a foundation of processes and new ways to work with the Gelli plate.
On the second day, we will be exploring mark making, collage, and you will complete at least one finished work of art. You will learn easy techniques to register your plate and allow for multiple printing and layering. Encouraging and supporting creativity is at the base of my teaching. This class is about what every abstract artist needs to know to build a painting that draws in the viewer and hold their interest. The best artist's know, and can implement, design fundamentals in their work. This course focuses on various types of Compositions: Horizon lines, Focal Points, Horizonal, diagonal and vertical compositions and more. We’ll talk about Shape, Value, Color, Edges etc. as they feed into our chosen compositions. Class will begin in the morning with students creating several small “Sketch paintings”, either in their journals or on separate sheets of paper. Then one of the favored sketches will be enlarged to 11” x 14” or larger on an Ampersand Panel and we will spend the afternoon working toward a finished painting. So you bought a Dremel Tool, with all those crazy attachments and bits, and the unbridled versatility of this amazing device has left you more than a little bit confused, or even intimidated. Fear not my friends, for this course will turn a Dremel Novice into a Dremel Master. I will explain all the basic workings of the tool, chucks, collets, and how to change the bits, and replace the brushes. We'll go over what many of the different tips and bits can do, such as drilling, cutting, buffing, sanding, grinding, polishing, carving, engraving, and a few of the specialty bits and attachments like tools that can drill and cut glass, porcelain or stone (diamond bit/cut-off wheel required). Students will not only get a demonstration of these tools and several of their myriad uses on all kinds of materials, but should bring along a variety of supplies to practice on, as there will plenty of quality hands-on time for you and your new tool. We will also cover using a Dremel drill press and basic safety for rotary tools.

Angels & Icons is a mash-up of inspirations that results in unique, textural, and globally influenced mixed media artwork that takes figurative artwork in a fun new direction. The original inspiration for this series of work came from a mix of Mexican Folk Art and Russian Orthodox Icons along with my own personal influences and experiences. If angels and / or icons aren't your thing? No worries! Students have taken this project in many directions including fairy queens, a comic book hero, a butterfly princess, a shaman, or any strong male or female figure that you want to convey.

IIn this workshop students will learn about several ways to use the mineral Mica. The techniques of altering this amazing mineral makes it a perfect addition to many crafting projects. During the class students will construct a 5.5” X 6” Journal which they can incorporate pages of their own artwork. Although the finished Journal in itself will be quite a nice piece to have, it will be the knowledge students will acquire in the uses of mica that will be the true addition to their art world. I love fabric and thread just as much as I love paper and glue. So why not combine the two? In this workshop we'll explore a variety of techniques for using both paper and fabric as we stitch and stick our way to a textured and layered mixed media collage. If sewing isn't your thing you can “stick” with glue. And if you do sew, the stitches can be as basic or fancy as you’d like and you can do a little or a lot – it’s all up to you. (Stitching demos will also be provided for those who want to learn the stitches in my samples.) We'll combine paints with rubber stamps, paper, and fabric and make a layered and collaged background. You'll also learn a fun and easy technique for using stencils to create a layered focal point combining fabric and paint with stencils and paper, then finish with final accents and optional stitches. There will also be a discussion and demonstration on how to combine bits and pieces to create unique embellishments to add to your piece so that you finish with a fabulous mash-up of fabric and paper that's ready to display.

This is a process class. If you want to be truly original – what better way to start than by making your own tools? In this class we will make our own stamps by gluing simple materials together. These materials will be in the form of shapes and marks that we can use to stamp into paints, etc. We will also cut and punch our own stencils to form borders and designs, and then we will alter small paint rollers to make even more marks! One of a kind brushes will be made and will become part of our repertoire for paintings and books. Then, we’ll take all of our new toys and use them to make decorative papers! This workshop could be called "metal shop for beginners". Students will spend the day learning all sorts of fun metalworking techniques while making 4 of these "charming" little pendants. Students will learn to drill, cut, polish, patina, grind, and engrave on copper and brass sheet metal. Then a nifty little technique to attach their own favorite charms or found objects with tiny brass hardware and/or copper and brass wire. Join artist Micah Goguen as we walk through design principles using collage, acrylic and texture pastes in a creative and innovative way. You will be able to create your own collage papers using GelPress gel plates that you get to keep. We will be using GOLDEN acrylics on Ampersand Art Panels to create simple abstract compositions. You will then be able to layer and arrange a cityscape or landscape following these methods. Finish it off by layering some texture with stencils and you will have your own unique pair of paintings. This is the workshop that started it all for me. My very first A&S workshop, and most popular class! Originally envisioned way back in '03, I have been teaching, practicing, improving, and fine tuning the design of this all-metal book binding since then, and I think I have it down (finally). We'll start with some heavy watercolor paper you can customize to make your book just perfect for writing, journaling, painting, scrapbooking, or whatever else you might want to do with your Glass Journal!
In this "form and function" workshop, students will begin by learning how to fabricate the entire metal book binding, completely "from scratch", give it a nice patina with some chemicals and a torch, and later, adorn it with chain, beads, charms, and other do-dads. Then, we'll attach the glass covers and some cool transparent photos. This unique binding and the skills you'll use to make it, once mastered, can be easily adapted to make book covers from many other materials and other mixed media art applications! Two transparent photos are included in your kit, but you are more than welcome to bring more personalized images for your covers if you wish. Just print out any 2 photos you like on transparency film at 4.25" sq. just don't trim them to size yet! Beveled glass covers come pre-drilled in your kit, due to time constraints of this one day workshop, but feel free to bring your own Dremel tool and a 1/8" diamond drill bit if you want to try your hand at drilling glass in class. Fully illustrated instruction booklet To complete the project, students MUST come to class with the following supplies: 16 pieces of 90# watercolor paper (either hot press/cold press, but it looks best hand torn). Each sheet should measure 3.75" x 7.5" (We will have time to give your paper a quick paint wash to give it some color, but if you like, please feel free to paint, stamp, collage, dye, color, or otherwise decorate your paper before you attend, just use lighter colors, and a not-too-busy design on at least two of the sheets, so the transparent images show up well on the front and back of the book.)

This is an easy and fun workshop. Each guest will receive (qty 3) pre-prepped crackle paste panel with bird templates to transfer. I will demonstrate how to prepare the GOLDEN crackle paste on an Ampersand panel even though you won't have to do that part. We will use GOLDEN High Flow acrylics to add layers of washes similar to watercolor and then saturate certain modules to create a mosaic stained glass effect. All materials will be provided. We will be using SilverBrush Silverwhite brushes. This is a very success oriented workshop that doesn't require a lot of effort or thinking. You must pre-register at least 24 hours or more before the class or materials will not be ready for you. Everyone will leave with 3 completed 5 x 7 artworks of different birds. You can choose from several bird templates that will be provided. No previous experience or drawing experience required. You will trace the template on the pre-prepped panel..
