1063 - Once Upon a Time

[back to quicklinks]

Come away for a day into a land far far away! Once upon a time and long long ago will come to life in our hands. Using your favorite fairy tale, story book, myth or legend, we'll create a gorgeous book with 5-6 lovely page spreads that you will treasure. Inspired by Lark book's upcoming story book publication, we'll use a variety of techniques including stencil cutting, stenciling, block carving, and ink jet transfers. We'll also patina metal with pattern, texture, image and text as we tell our tales. These techniques will be ones you'll use again and again. You'll make fun creative decisions for your pages, and we'll journey together through the process of making our fabulous original artist books. Come enjoy a magical and amazing day!   A workbook with techniques and resources will be provided.

Instructor will provide acrylic paints, patina solutions and supplies, block carving tools, a small selection of stencils, spray adhesive, hair dryer, wire for attaching charms, tools, images to use to create some simple stencils and blocks, blender pens for use in class.

A materials fee of $3 for carving block is payable to instructor on day of class.

Supply List:
--A special book to house your fairy tales. I used a Victorian photo album but other books will work fine. A larger (in dimensions) child's board book is an excellent choice because they are alredy sturdy and broken down into a small number of spreads. Anything that you can glue pages together to have 5-6 page spreads with which to work is also cool.
--decorative scrapbook paper- I like Imaginesce, Basic Gray, but anything that fits with our story is great. You'll need 12 sheets to make 6 spreads.
--a good glue stick, ruler, scissors, extra fine sharpie-any color
--small travel pack baby wipes
--an exacto knife and extra blades, cutting mat
--small blank stencil sheet- available at Michaels, JoAnns, Mister Art, Dick Blick and a variety of places
--some good paper for transfers- printmaking aper, hot press watercolor, nice drawing paper- relatively smooth, but not glossy, you don't need much so bring from a few 5x7 ish pieces from whatever you have already
--stencil brushes- you can bring the disposable kind if you don't have or want to buy stencil brushes
--1/8" eyelets- both short and long, eyelet setting tools including a punch
--1 pkg wiremesh, either brass or copper, available at Michael's, or a variety of online suppliers such as Mister Art and Dick Blick
--Versamark watermark stamp pad
--rubber stamps from your stash that work with yor story, including a set of alphabet stamps
--and of course, the fun part: choose some of your stuff!
*Images that you can use to set the stage, or illustrate your characters- old or new photos, images from magazines, book, old paintings, your own work... think people and places you will want to include. Copy a few images onto PrintWorks Ultra Premium Glossy paper - The Printworks website lists the following retailers for this paper:  CVS, Publix, Lewis drugs, Long Drugs, Meijers, Rite Aid, Sears, Target, Sav-On, Winn Dixie, and the Image shop on line.  They have links to these retailers on the bottom right side of the page for this paper at:
http://www.myprintworks.com/product_category.asp?category_id=1
*Objects that you can use to decorate your cover, fabric trims, ribbons, jewels, charms and other things that fit with your story, it's location, the characters. Think luxe!
*last but not least, your story! Optional: You may want to print it out on some aged looking or baroque feeling paper, so you can snip text as you wish.

Optional items:
any stencils you have at home (instructor will also have some)
