A104 - Mystorian Necklace & Book- day 3

[back to quicklinks]

Spend a full three days with Nina Bagley in a single unified workshop at asilomar.  This well-rounded time of creativity, sharing and inspiration will focus on the fabrication of an individually designed art, storybook and jewelry ensemble unique to your own collection of findings and memories.

Day One:  Construction of a necklace using your own small-scale found objects that have significance to you – a small worn stick of driftwood, a smooth pebble, beads, vintage jewelry mementos, a tiny note of significant emotional value….be gathering your treasures in a small box in the coming months (and certainly at the beach right there!) for your workshop creation that will also include some findings both new and old from Nina’s personal studio collection.  We will utilize wire-wrapping, drilling, hammering, and general cold connecting techniques to form a story-invoking necklace, textural and evocative in form and visual appeal, that features as its focal point a brass-framed locket containing a small accordion fold collage.

Day Two:  Construction of an metal-covered, accordion-fold book that will showcase within its paper and metal pages the necklace we created on our first day.  The book’s vintage-styled pages, separate mat board rectangles joined by fabric/ribbon or wire laced through eyelets, will each hold a  story that describes words and paper imagery three or four of your favorite  treasures strung upon the “storian” necklace (or not!  This is entirely up to you); one page will hold a small drawstring bag, attached with eyelets, that will contain the necklace.   If time permits later in the day, we will further embellish our books’ pages with handwriting, stamping, and paper ephemera.

Day Three:  Continuation of book embellishment, and the creation of a story inspired by your gathered relics.  The morning’s focus will be a description of methods used to trigger story ideas for an art piece, allowing the items you ultimately selected for your storian necklace to tell their own tale, fiction or fact.  The story will be used as embellishment, inscribed by hand or stamped, on the paper pages of your accordion book.  The final hour or so of this technique-intensive workshop will be spent gathered as a family of fellow artists, sharing openly with one another our books and our treasures, which truly are the renderings of our own cherished stories of life.      This workshop will cost the same price as a total of three individual one-day workshops at asilomar. I am excited about the opportunity to spend an extended amount of time with my students, getting to know you and watching you have fun creating your jewelry and book art for three whole days!
