A112 - Off the Cuff

[back to quicklinks]

In the days when the cuffs of men's formal white shirts were made of celluloid they were sometimes used to make quick notes in order to remind themselves of some points or other that they had, perhaps, not considered before. Improvised notepads by their wearers at dinner-tables. It also refers to one of the showy tricks of dandies of the day to 'shoot their cuffs,' which a dictionary of the period defines as 'making a sudden and ostentatious display of one's cuffs. In this workshop, we will be honing our home-grown metal-smithing skills to improvise our collections into layered, soldered, hammered, stamped and beaded cuffs. We will use organic forms as a sturdy base on which we will add found objects a-plenty and/or add our favorite adage through stamping in metal. A piece of beach glass, a drilled stone, pearls from a family necklace – all bits found and gathered to author a story of memories and spontaneous thought worthy of flashing around a little.

**Soldering, etching acids and blackening agents will all be used in this class. All measures will be taken to create adequate ventilation as much as possible. If you have extreme sensitivities to these products, consider this carefully before registering. Also be aware that the room will be noisy with lots of hammers working away.

Student Supply List:

5+ feet of 18-20 ga. brass or sterling wire. (Five feet will make one cuff so the more wire you bring, the more cuffs you can make) Wire can be purchased here http://www.thunderbirdsupply.com/proddetail.aspx?stockNum=151921 and here http://www.thunderbirdsupply.com/proddetail.aspx?stockNum=111028 I am also able to get brass wire in 20 ga. from my local Ace Hardware so that is another good source.
**NOTE: Be sure you don’t buy wire with an anti-tarnish or “stay bright” protective coating. Brass colored wire purchased from a craft store will generally not work.**
