N101 - Soldering for Virgins

[back to quicklinks]
$ 140

Whether you’re a virgin or just haven’t been around the block enough...this is the basics class you’ve been looking for. Based upon my actual experience, I will show you everything you need to know about soldering including the tools, techniques, why's and why not's, as well as the tips and tricks of soldering. You’ll learn how to solder basic charms and then the special techniques I have created for my signature Bubbles, Double Bubbles, and dimensional objects. This class will take you from the beginning (glass cutting) through to the finishing touches (charm attachments). Demonstrations will guide you while you try your hand at the soldering process and create your own charms. This is a technique-based workshop and NOT a project class.   You should be able to complete about 5 charms - more if you work quickly.  Bracelet and assorted glass included.

SUPPLY LIST:

1) Hand Towel (old terry hand towel is good, two are better!  Washcloth is too small)
2) Cookie Sheet (a cheapie rectangular non-stick is best) *If you forget yours - stop by a store on your way and get one - I will not have extras and you cannot solder without one*
3) Work Surface (just something to cover and protect your table from messes and burns!  10x12 or larger )
4) Scissors
5) Pencil or Pen
6) Small jewelers metal block or other heavy square object for propping or 3rd hand (*only if you have it already*)
7) Pliers:
1 Bent Nose (important for jump rings - the metal tip bends)
1 Flat-Nose or Chain Nose (The metal tip is square-cut, preferably with teeth)
** Home Depot has a $10 Red-Handled set of 6 pliers that are good - Bent Nose not included**
1 Round Nose (Optional - for twisting wire)
1 Wire Cutters (one of your other pliers may have a wire-cutter on it already - optional, if you don't have it, don't buy it)
8) Miscellaneous Found/Dimensional Objects (for Playing) such as a chandelier crystal, scrabble piece, domino, marble, sea glass, broken china.
9) Artwork to put between the glass (for both the front & back)  in assorted small sizes as follows:
1" x 1" square,  3/4" x 1" rectangle, 1/2" x 1" rectangle,  and a few round that range from 1/2" to 1".  Extra artwork is always a good idea. (if you do not have pre-made artwork,  we will just use plain paper or some papers I have since this is a soldering-technique class, not a project class and there won't be time to make artwork).
DO NOT bring glossy images.

SPECIAL SUPPLY NOTE:

I will be bringing soldering supplies for those who wish to borrow/share.  If you need to borrow a soldering iron, solder, or sal block, you may check them out by leaving  your drivers license in trade (I promise not to peek a the picture).  Remember to bring this with you to the workshop!!!  Of course, if you have your own soldering supplies, please bring them.
