Nova Scotia is Latin for New Scotland. No matter where you are, you are never more than 40 miles from the ocean. Art & Soul will be held in the little college town of Wolfville, along the Evangeline Trail, which parallels the Bay of Fundy coast. Your journey there will take you through some of “North America’s earliest European history and the delightful villages and orchards of the Annapolis Valley. It’s a journey that spans 400 years of settlement, a journey that will take you past forts, farms and fishing villages, a journey rich in culture, diversity, charm and natural beauty.
Phenomenal Fundy is also rich in natural history, particularly migrating shore birds, whales, shad and other marine life. In late July and early August, before flying non-stop to South America, over two million sandpipers refuel on the mud shrimp exposed by the receding Fundy tides. The power of nature is evident all along the magnificent Fundy coast, with its world-famous tides and ever-changing landscape of rocky shores, fertile farmlands, salt marshes and broad sandy beaches. It’s a naturalist’s dream!”
Victorian homes, orchards, vineyards, beaches and sandpipers - how will you ever capture it all? In this class, you will create the perfect expandable travel journal that will hold all the papers, pennings, promises and possibilities you acquire on your journey to Nova Scotia, and then still have space for everything you experience during the week and as you take your leave of Art & Soul Nova Scotia.
Your journal will be constructed of fabric, board and watercolor papers lushly painted in the colors of a region that will imprint itself forever in your mind – a hundred shades of green, an ocean of blues, berry reds and sunshine yellows. The unbound construction allows you to slip in mementoes gathered here and there, create collaged pages in class and slip out a few loose pages to scribe your spontaneous thoughts while you slip away on a quiet walk - then return and tuck them away inside your ever growing journal.
We will also explore image transfers (bring your digital), thermofax screen printing, resists and other background design techniques. Your journal will be uniquely yours, a treasured tome of your time in “New Scotland.”
