NS05 - A Common Thread

What is the Common Thread that we as artists share? What are the ties that bind us together? We are not like one piece of unbroken cloth, the same color, the same texture, the same size. Artists are more like a collage, many patches, many pieces, many colors and sizes bound and held together by a common thread.

Start with a blank canvas, several actually - cloths of cotton canvas, gauze, broadcloth, of silk and paper too (all provided in your class kit). Day one will be spent adding rich color to cloth to create your own fabrics through dyeing, painting, printing, wax resist and more. On Day 2 you will make your mark. We will use needle and thread to explore mark-making, developing a personalized and contemporary approach to creating stitched constructions. We will explore and alter old embroidery stitches and techniques using a variety of threads and alternative materials. The emphasis will be on personal work, expressive stitching and how to achieve both.

This last day of class on the last day of the retreat is a perfect and relaxing way to end your time at Art & Soul Nova Scotia. We will gather round, needle and thread in hand…maybe even outside…joined by a common thread.

Materials fee of $20 payable to the instructor at the beginning of class includes:

  • fabrics, dyes, wax, paints and more

Registration opens August 28, 2008
