If you’ve made abstract collages, you are ready to take mixed media to a new level. Learn to use torn and cut magazine pages to create striking, realistic portraits of your pet or other animal. Learn to use recycled paper as if it is paint. Discover this wonderful way to wake up the sleeping artist within. Anyone who can rip paper can make this style of collage. The challenge is to see that collages are unique individual expressions, just like the artists are. You will explore the technical challenge of making realistic renderings from recycled materials. Bring your sense of humor to make these unusual and appealing pet portraits show some whimsy and character. Supplies Needed for Class: Color photo or photocopy of an appealing pet, with focus on the face. 8x10 or larger is better than 3 x 5. Tub of Yes! Paste (available at Michaels or art supply stores) Scissors, craft knife (Exacto style) Cutting mat Old magazines with colorful, heavier, glossy pages Old washcloth Old credit card or other stiff paste spreader or palette knife Paper grocery bag for discards Masking or drafting tape Ruler Several 11” X 14” sheets of wallpaper, heavy paper stock or mat board Sheet of heavy paper stock or mat board (minimum 13 x 17 up to 16 x 20) Narrow point felt tip markers Tracing paper Optional items: Tissue paper, various colors Paper napkins, various colors Papers that are interesting to you Pages from old books Framing Mat for an 11 x 14 frame Framing Mat for a 16 x 20 frame.
