315 - Sticks & Stones (2 Days)

[back to quicklinks]
$ 260 Plus $10 materials fee

Are you tired of gathering the same old tiresome buttons, keys, dominos, or vintage photographs for your own “unique” jewels and assemblage? Glance out your window and marvel at what is there for the taking – rocks, sticks, feathers, seashells, beach glass – all treasures waiting for your taking! We will spend two full days exploring different ways to incorporate natural findings into lovely jewelry pieces using simple hand drilling, wiring, hammering and collage in addition to well-loved wordplay. I’ll be demonstrating glass and stone drilling/grooving as well as ways to use a Dremel for rockwork – a true passion. We will also explore the unique design of resin casting into shallow bezel forms; I’ll provide a few bezels in the kit, but feel free to bring a few forms of your own (small, please—we have limited amount of resin). Resin – GOOD, crystal clear resin - takes a full 24 hours to cure, so we will work with that technique the first morning of our two day class, allow it to cure, then spend the next day drilling and assembling the resin charms into our necklace chain, and hanging them as charms. The focus of this class will be on rough/basic jewelry technique and demonstration, with emphasis on soft stone, shell, and stick drilling – and shall include a miniature shadowbox construction we will incorporate into a very basic jewelry design.

Supply List:
--bent needle-nosed pliers, round needle-nosed pliers, and wire snips (smaller version for craft work--available at volcanoarts.biz)
--small hammer
--cutting pad to prevent marring table surface and to absorb hammering
--assorted junk chain; mismatched odd lengths are fine!
--20 gauge wire (copper or base metal), enough to work with in class; can be found in picture- hanging section of hardware stores
--metal ruler,
--utility knife (Exacto),
--scissors
--PVA glue or matte medium
--small binder clips (one or two)

Optional items:
--Fiskar’s hand drill (can be found at Michael’s in the sewing section) as well as small clamps
--Dremel (I’ll bring mine, and I’ll provide use of diamond drill bits for stone and glass drilling.)
--bench block

Kit fee includes:   the brass frame and mica, resin and bezels, small eyelets, and pre-cut squares/rectangles of copper for charms. Please make sure to bring tools and materials listed; you’ll appreciate not having to wait your turn!
