Students in this class will learn how to make their own individual tiles out of polymer clay, which will then be used to create mosaic Icons. Students will be taught with demos and a hands-on approach the various steps from rolling out the clay to glazing the final product. In addition, students will be taught many "tricks of the trade" for creating unique looks with polymer clay that can be used in other projects. Upon completion of painting their own unique handmade tiles, students will then combine their tiles with a variety of embellishments and collected objects to create their own personal Icons. Due to facility constraints for oven usage, I will be providing all of the handmade tiles for students to paint. The student's final piece will be a contemporary but Byzantine-looking Icon, made on a piece of wood which can be either hung on the wall or displayed on a plate stand or easel.
