Learn how to use a sketchbook even if you don't draw. The sketchbook can be a vehicle to explore, develop and document new projects and ideas as well as record life experiences — both exercises can provide great fodder and inspiration for future works, or simply be a treasured book of experiences. This course explores the artists’ sketchbook with the goal of both creating a handmade book and experimenting with writing, paint and collage enhance them. There will be class time for experimentation with materials and creating an accordion book form from cover to cover. We'll discuss useful ways of using sketchbooks to record experiences, thoughts or visual ideas. Topics will include; introduction of materials, page layout and design, book construction, and incorporating text, image and collage. Open to all levels.
Supply List:
--bone folder
--lightweight (not tissue weight) decorative papers
--pens (black and sepia, in Superfine, Fine, and Medium weight - Faber Castell suggested)
--sketchbook (5x5 Canson suggested)
--basic watercolor set
--watercolor brush
--glue stick
--matte medium
--inexpensive glue brush
--pencil
--sandpaper (preferably a block)
--exacto knife and new blades (at least 2)
--metal ruler
--small cutting mat
--Please note: paper specs below will give you the opportunity to color coordinate your books as desired. These papers will become the covers of the book that you will be creating:
--Cover paper: 9"x9" square (medium weight, not super heavy or stiff - this paper will need to be flexible enough to bend around the corners of boards)
--Inside cover paper 2 sheets of 6" x 5.5" paper (not tissue weight paper)
Optional: ephemera, tickets, maps, lists,
letters, poem’s, acrylic paints, and any material that you enjoy working with
Materials fee includes: Davey Board, watercolor paper for the book, adhesives (PVA, sobo, yes paste), glue brushes, collage materials, substrates, paint, roll of parchment paper, Dixie cups for gluing at individual stations, extra decorative papers
