(Official Warning: This workshop can be emotionally intense and psychologically challenging for some. Please read the following description carefully. These courses are life altering and not recommended for those not interested in doing deep inner work.)
It’s time to expand our horizons and stretch our limits. It’s time to map our existence and point the way out of the confines of our known comfort zones. Beginning with a large format Atlas- the bigger the better-as a matter of fact, if you can barely lift it, you’re onto something- we’re going to press the parameters of our creativity by going boldly where we have yet to venture- no more 5x7 books with nice little pages. Not for us. No 7x9 finely decorated little altered book. This book gets big, gets bold gets pushy gets out there gets loud and in your face with larger than life images and words so big they have to shout across the pages. Using a large Atlas, no smaller than 11x 14, as the container for our visual journaling experience, we will learn to find our powerful, and aggressive artistic voice that is waiting at uncharted depths to be discovered. By combining journal writing exercises with art making assignments in a mixed media frenzy, I will introduce you to the joys of working large- you may never work small again! It’s big, it’s bad, and it’s beautiful! This book will relate to distance, mapping, and asserting, I AM HERE. Humble, small, less than, not enough, has no place here. Let me introduce you to a different side of yourself. As your guide, I’ll help you chart the distance. (No prior experience necessary but a certain level of self awareness is expected)
Supply List:
--Your Large Atlas
--At least two large gluesticks
--scissors
--some brushes for your paints, (large and detail)
--a rag or two,(rags are great for covering large expanses!)
--and a jar for water (make sure your brushes fit!)
--And remember, we’re living large here- so make sure you bring big stuff- BIG brushes, maybe even a brayer- not the little one- the big one- and bring large pieces of paper or big book pages for collage images- we’ll need to cover a lot of territory!
--All Visual Journalist’s should have a set of rubber stamp letters (If you have big letters- bring those). And I highly recommend Staz On stamp pads because we work so quickly.
--You will need acrylic paint- any brand, any color in at least two colors, one light one & one dark.
--You will need at least two brush markers in different colors- black would be good.
--A graphite pencil- regular old number two is fine, but if you can get to an art store get an ebony pencil, or a 6B, or a graphite stick (not charcoal)
--writing pen
--Collage: 1 magazine to cut up and one poetry book to cut up.
Each student will is required to bring a “Mystery Bag: A plastic grocery bag will do. Some suggestions are collage items, (but big ones) a big old paintbrush that is all glued together, that orange paint you hate, stickers from when you were 14, Artist tools and supplies you no longer use or never liked, torn up pieces of your artwork that didn’t work out (no recognizable artwork, please) books to cut up, magazines, sticks, markers, 2 inch pencils, you get the picture-sort of a grab bag. We will be using these mystery bags as part of our mixed media explorations. What, and how much to bring, is up to you. Don’t worry about trying to include nice things- we’re looking more for garbage items. We all ready have our own nice supplies-we want your cast offs to really make us think! No need to decorate this bag.
