1292 - Altered Fabric Collage and Book

[back to quicklinks]
$ 135 Plus $10 materials fee

This is such a fun book - it's not difficult, and although we will be painting images, you won't be painting them from scratch, and you don't need to know how to draw. We will use supplied sketches (or you can bring your own), and layer them on fabric, add more collage elements, finger paint, add texture and washes of color. Explore simple ways to create fabric landscapes, and/or abstract compositions. We will add blank journal pages inside, and complete the signatures with more collage elements. Covers are thick and sturdy, yet flexible, and can be changed to any size you desire, or, can even be used as frameable art. No sewing required, but you can bring a sewing machine if you would rather machine-stitch the pages to the signature instead of by hand, or if you would like to add sewing as an embellishment. Depending on the amount of detail you add to your book, you may not finish it in class, but will leave with an understanding of the techniques taught, and the ability to finish at home.

Supply List:
--Small bottle of Matte Gel Medium
--Small bottle of Matte Medium
--Small container of white gesso
--Soft Brayer
--Box of Parchment paper. Available at most grocery stores.
--Paint Palette.
--Palette knife. This must be trowel shaped. Flat ones won't work. A credit card will work in a pinch, but not as well as the palette knife.
--Water container.
--Paper towels or paint rag.
--Pencil.
--About 40 sheets of journal paper. Sample book uses 8.5" X 14.
--1/4" and 1/2" wide flat brushes.
--Fairly long, round or liner brush. Liner brushes with tiny short bristles won't work.
--A couple bottles of acrylic paint in favorite colors, along with raw sienna, a brown, cream, and a black for faces. Any brand will work, even craft paint.
--1/2 yard duck cloth, or other unprimed canvas-type cloth in cream or white. This needs to be a fairly close weave, and will be used as the base for your book.
--Collage goodies - anything you would like to add to your book. Ideas include: images, ephemera, tags, lace, buttons, beads, feathers, text from books etc.
--Fabric scraps for creating covers of book and using in signature and spines. Quilting cotton, sheer, prints, home decorator fabrics, and upholstery fabric are a few ideas.
--Glue stick
--Tacky glue for gluing dimensional items such as buttons.
--Hair dryer and small extension cord if you have one.
--Small cutting mat to lay signatures on as you punch holes.

Optional:
--Sewing machine and thread, if you would like stitching on your book and to sew the pages to the signature.
--If you can fit one in, bring an Iron and kitchen towel to use as a padding (not from the hotel, please!)
--Japanese screw punch with a 1/16" or a 1/8" tip, or a 1/16"- 1/8" punch and hammer to share.
--Rubber nose pliers to aid in pulling thread though the hole when binding book.

Materials fee includes:
Color copies of my images, sketch patterns, tissue paper, waxed linen and needle, vinyl, and various other goodies.
