For this workshop we will use Faux Bone and sterling silver to fashion a “Shield” amulet that can be as powerful as it is beautiful. For those who haven’t used it, Faux Bone is one of the newest and most versatile materials to come along in years! It is basically indestructible while at the same time the tools to form it are basic, the material friendly and the process easy and accessible. You will be able to cut, stamp, file, hammer and scrimshaw the surface and rub in paints, inks and other colorants. You can also attach virtually any pre-made element to the Faux Bone using rivets, nails, micro nuts and bolts, screws or tabs with no worry about cracking or breaking. We will add surface texture to the sterling silver with hammers, files and stamps and join the two materials with rivets that can be hammered right against the Faux Bone. Sterling silver eye pins will allow the piece to hang from a chain or cord. When finished, the piece has the patina of age and looks and feels like a cross between ivory and Bakelite. We will also talk about the nature of amulets and explore ideas like the difference between asking for success or protection from failure.
