Poetry inspires us, stimulates our imaginations, and often our artwork! In this class, we will illustrate a poem, so process is very important. What poem you choose, why it was chosen, and what vision the poem gives to you will determine the content of your pages! This class hopes to focus on the use of narrative (in this case, a poem) to inspire personal content—we will use a poem as our structure for this project giving you a foundation to then create personally meaningful work around your own musings. The product will be a treasure-filled 5-6 page book, bound into the covers of an old book. This class calls for you to work at integrating your own photos with text and vintage images. I will demonstrate how to integrate your photos using transfer techniques, mica, transparencies, and manipulation. I will also demonstrate some ways to extend the page, apply patinas to metal mesh in a way that create visual texture, and wire wrap embellishments.
Supply List:
--Front and back cover boards from an old book- no larger than 5” x7”
--Tools necessary to install 1/8” eyelets- hole punch, eyelet setter, small hammer
--1 package brass very fine mesh- looks like this: http://tinyurl.com/2nkf39 and is also available at Michael’s and craft/art supplies that carry metal embossing supplies. (The type with the larger openings will NOT work for this class.)
--basic tool kit of scissors, glue stick, ruler
--a few of whatever art media you like best- a couple of watercolors, caran d’ache, pastels, pencils- whatever you like.
--snapshots or images related to your chosen poem
--Several images printed with regular ink on cheap glossy inkjet photo paper- I recommend Jetprint multiproject paper from Walmart- the office supply section, not the computer section. You will want to have four or five different images, a couple of each; remember you book is fairly tiny, so make the images no larger than 4x6. Consider enlarging certain sections of an image or using close-up shots.
--One transparency of a favorite image related to your poem. (no larger than 5 x 7)
--A baggie with some collage bits, ribbon, charms, bits and bobs- related to your poem
--**Using your own snapshots creates a richer more meaningful art process and product. If you have questions about what to bring, please email me at ludwiglk@aol.com
