Ty & Marcia Schultz

We went to 2 years of Art School and then 4 years of Emily Carr School of Art and Design. After Art School we started a business making props for the movie industry called Creative Props Inc. We have had  our business for 26 years, making molds, sculpting, painting, casting in metal, plastic and rubber among other techniques used in the movie industry. Our classes tend toward introducing new materials and techniques previously unavailable or unfamiliar to artists.  We believe that by expanding the vocabulary of these materials and language we can open up new vistas for the artist. Susan Bates-Bezek

Susan is best described as a well established artist whose interests cut across many creative areas. Her passion, however, is Fabric Art.  “Fabric Art offers an almost unlimited opportunity for creative expression. Also, it’s a lot of fun!”. Susan has developed her talents over many years, including teaching at the Adult Education Program for Santa Barbara City College, as a credentialed instructor. She has been teaching arts for the better part of 25 years, including featured classes at Peacemaker’s, Costa Mesa, California.  She has been featured in Art Doll Quarterly and has appeared as a guest artist on the Carol Duvall Christmas Special. For her, the draw to teaching is sharing her Fabric Art techniques with her students. “I enjoy teaching because I love to share ideas with my students. We all learn together and the network we form to share future ideas is probably one of the most satisfying parts of teaching”. Susan’s classes are considered fun, because they are always tailored to the skill level of each student class. As students continue through the classes, they learn more and more advanced techniques. They also begin to develop their own styles. “Art is fun, but it is also a very rewarding outlet when you just feel that need to express yourself.” Susan Lives in Santa Barbara, with her husband and a small zoo. Sandra Duran Wilson

Sandra Duran Wilson is a studio artist, instructor and co-author of Image Transfer Workshop and recently released Surface Treatment Workshop. Her work is represented in galleries in the US and AU. She has taught at the local college in her home of Santa Fe, NM as well as in her studio, also around the US, France, Italy and Australia.

Her love of exploration and experimentation comes from a background in science and experimentation. She grew up in a family of both scientists and artists. As a child she trained with her great aunt Santa Duran, a well known Texas landscape artist, and she spent time looking through her fathers microscope and would then paint what she saw. She holds both Fine Art and Science degrees from the University of NM. Her work is in corporate, private and civic collections, including the Santa Fe Convention Center.

“I love to play with paint and collage. I call myself an abstract collage painter. I find inspiration in music, math, sounds, colors and my surroundings. I teach in order to share what I am always pushing myself to learn. Transfers and collage add a new dimension and textural layer to my art. I incorporate printmaking, collage and transfers into as many as 20 layers in a painting. I find it exciting to collaborate and share creativity. The world needs more art and inspiration. If I can help someone along the way to find the joy that I do in the everyday creative process, then my day is complete”.

Rogene Manas

With her unique, primitive art style and inventive techniques, this successful Oregon artist makes what she calls “modern day folk art.” Combining plant, bird, and insect imagery with figurative elements in a slightly surrealistic fashion, Rogene Mañas explores and illuminates what she calls “the essence within.” Drawing from her imagination, her organic and often haunting compositions reflect both her Mediterranean heritage and her passion for Mexican folk art. Using paper maché clay, collage materials and acrylic paint, she creates sculptural relief forms and textural paintings.

As co-owner of an international card company and a designer and illustrator for more than 35, Rogene Mañas retired from her successful business to pursue her love of art making in 2006. After majoring in art at the University of Oregon, she expanded her skills by studying with numerous professional artists in the Pacific Northwest, Italy, France, and Mexico. Known for her plein-air landscape paintings and impressionistic still life work, Mañas made a sudden departure in style after spending winters in Mexico. Her work is shown at Jacob's Gallery and Passionflower Designs in Eugene, Oregon. She also shows at Guardino Gallery in Portland and at Zeek Gallery in Salem, Oregon. She was featured on Oregon Art Beat, an OPB program showcasing Oregon Artists, in January 2011.

Rogene teaches her innovative techniques at mixed media workshops in Eugene and Portland. She has also been an instructor at Lane Community College and in the public schools as an artist in residence. “I have always lead informal workshops for friends and high school students. Inspiring others to make art is almost better than making art myself. Either way, I try to make art everyday."

Rogene will be featured on Oregon Art Beat Jan 13  http://www.opb.org/programs/artbeat/

Magdalena Muldoon

I was born in Mexico City in 1963. My mom opened her Crafts Business “Mercart” in Mexico City in 1970 so I grew up surrounded by fine crafts. In 1990, Mercart Mexico introduced the metals and tools for traditional metal embossing in Mexico and later in Latin America. I had the opportunity to learn the traditional “Repujado” (metal embossing) techniques from 5 of the best teachers in Mexico. In 2002 I moved to the US with my husband and 3 daughters and brought my mom’s metal embossing part of the business: “Mercart USA”. Since then, I have been teaching all over the US and participating either as exhibitor or teacher in shows like CHA, SDP, Art & Soul, Stampaway USA, Artiscape, Rubber Stamps and Scrapbook Shows, Artist’s retreats, etc. In May 2009 I was invited to teach certification workshops in 4 cities in Japan. I was also part of the jury in Japan’s 1st Metal Embossing Competition. I was asked to participate in a series of demos in Argentina in May 2010. I published the book “Metal Embossing Workshop” in 2006 (Sterling) and I was also part of Page Sage’s “Art Unscripted” DVD hosted by Carol Duval. I have participated in articles in multiple magazines in the US and Mexico. When I’m not teaching or running the business, I enjoy being with my family, going to the movies, reading or just having friends over. Contact: www.mercartusa.com

Bonnie Sabel

Bonnie Sabel is the author of, Positively Postcards [quilted postcards]. The book is in second printing now.
She believes that for quilters, and other artists, life is a journey. Along the way, we learn from others, we learn by observing, and we learn from doing. Then we take our own experiences and skills and create Art that is uniquely our own.
Quilted postcards offer an exceptional opportunity to experiment with design, colors, contrast, materials and techniques, adding to our personal tool kit of experiences and skills.
Making quilted postcards is all about just having fun. No corners to match up, and almost no rules at all! A great way to utilize those wonderful novelty prints in your stash. “Almost-Instant” gratification – design and complete one of these mini-quilts in a single evening. Be warned they are highly addictive. They make treasured birthday and thank-you cards, and are fun to swap with quilting friends. We can’t give a quilt to everyone we love, but this way each dear friend can have a sample.
Bonnie Sabel came to the world of quilting through wearable art.
In the 1980’s she became intrigued with wearable art. Her Monarch Flutterby jacket, an original design, made with a double-reverse-appliqué technique was juried into the prestigious “Designed to Wear” show at Oregon School of Arts and Crafts in 1985, and several other shows.
Bonnie’s “Divinely Feminine” quilted postcard won First Place and also Viewer’s Choice First Place in the [judged] category of quilted postcards, Glendale Quilt Guild show, Glendale, CA, 2007.
Bonnie is a retired accountant, living in Vancouver, WA, near her daughter and twin grand-daughters.

Collage is a wonderful way to wake up the sleeping artist within. Collages are unique individual expressions, just like the artists are. I am exploring a range of subjects without a political agenda, welcoming the technical challenge of making realistic renderings from recycled materials. I enjoy making something attractive from discards, appropriating images and putting them together in intriguing ways.  Like any artist, I am especially thrilled when my work calls to a viewer to come closer and spend some time engaged in the piece.  While my pictorial collages are best viewed from a distance, a close up inspection can reveal a very different piece of art.

"My goal as an artist is to let my work bring joy to the viewer."

My art combines mixed media explorations of paint and collage elements, weaving together an interest in surface and imagery plucked from free association and dreams.

I have lived most of my life in San Antonio, Texas, then Taos, NM before deciding Portland is home. I received my BFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio and my MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art (Michigan). I've taught art at San Antonio College (6 years), the Southwest School of Arts and Crafts (4 years), Portland Community College (3.5 years), as well as small classes in my private studio (1 year). Past classes have been primarily focused on mixed media painting. I love teaching, as it re-awakens my passion for disseminating information about art. Teaching can be a very connective experience, and it gives me great pleasure to see anyone grow in their confidence in expressing themselves.

Jean VanBrederode

As an artist, I have found copper and enamels to be the most thrilling media I have ever used, allowing me endless variety in color, form, & texture. To experience the results of combining glass powders on copper or steel and transforming them in a 1500 degree kiln is an incredibly satisfying adventure! No two pieces are ever exactly alike and each creation has a special gleaming personality of its own!

Art has always been a part of my life in one way or another and now is my main passion and driving force. Soon after I retired from public school teaching five years ago, I started going to Art & Soul Retreats in order to find an art form that would bring excitement into my life each and every day. I feel very fortunate to have taken one introductory enameling workshop from a fabulous teacher, Richard Salley, who introduced this fascinating art form into my life! I knew when I felt comfortable calling myself an artist and enamelist that I had finally reached my goal!

What I love the most about the process of enameling is that it lends itself to rule breaking and experimentation and offers endless possibilities for creating incredibly unique works of art. My work is constantly evolving and because of that, will never lose its appeal!

Teaching was my profession prior to retirement and comes quite naturally to me. My hope for the future is to conduct project and technique-oriented enameling classes in my own studio and also to teach classes at the Art & Soul Retreats that introduced me to the joy of enameling!

Leah Virsik

As an artist, Leah Virsik, works in multiple layers, primarily using paper, paint, fabric and stitching. She has a degree in marketing with a minor in studio art and works as a graphic designer by day.
She recalls that, “as a child I would sew with my mom and what I most remember is the guilt I’d feel as I jammed up her machine. Now, when the threads and material bunch up they become useful fodder for my work.” Optimistic and with a love for learning she looks for what works when her creative explorations don’t always go as planned.
Leah exhibits her work and teaches book arts and collage classes to adults in the San Francisco Bay Area. She sees herself in her students, especially the messy ones. To learn more about her,  http://leahvirsik.com

I have been painting since 2005. From the beginning I began teaching. I am more a natural teacher than a natural artist. What makes me such a good teacher is art does not come easy for me. Consequently to be able “get it” I have to break it down into bite size, easy to understand steps. The results of my learning process is I am able to present in a way in which all levels and abilities can learn. I purposely put together projects with student success in mind. Once a project is prepared and presented I individualize the teaching to the needs of each student. My goal is to prepare the student so they can begin to implement the medium at home. The most common comment from clients who buy my work is “I love your use of color”. Encourage students to play and have fun is a high priority.
