P309 - Upholstery and Ribbon Fringe Book

$ 150

I love making books! My favorite part is the way it “feels” when it’s completed, so it’s important to me that it has some weight, it’s stable, held together well, good paper, and something unique, not just on the outside, but also the inside. This book is an upholstery covered fabric book and the binding on the outside left is a piece of rug latch hooking fabric and ribbons/silk fabrics are used for the hooking. I will provide a tool for you to keep. The inside binding of the pages will be a coptic stitch. I will provide the needles and the linen thread. I will provide fabrics for you to choose from and each fabric will have approximately 5 rolls of ribbon to use for the latch hooking. We will cover the boards with batting and glue the fabric around the boards. Wait until it’s finished and you run your fingers through the ribbons. It’s so FUN!

All paper in this book is 140-pound Exact Index (I have it cut from sheets) so it can be painted, rubber stamped, drawn on, etc. This book is so fun to look at, because I use a lot of old purchased scrapbook papers (insert between pages) and stickers and rub-ons to use them up. I also distress the edges with distress ink pads and/or paint.

These next few pictures show scrapbook pages, stickers and various papers added to the book. It’s a very fun book. You can also use rubber stamps, etc.

The last picture shows several of the fabrics I recently purchased for the book covers. I will have much more, depending on how many students sign up!

In this class you will learn Coptic Stitch, Rug Latch Hooking, pleasing layouts of papers and stickers, etc., and of course, the technique to make this book (putting it all together). Hope to see you there!

Supplies provided by instructor:
Materials Fee $ 25.00 paid to instructor at beginning of class includes:
• Two pieces of pressed board for the front and back covers.
• 25 Pieces of 140 lb Exact Index paper pre-cut and folded into five signatures. The book measures 7 1/2 X 7 1/2”.
• Binding Needle (to keep) and Linen Thread for binding the pages together (Coptic Stitch)
• Rug latch hooking tool (to keep) for ribbons
• Rug latch hooking fabric
• Ribbons for the binding edge and 1/3 yard upholstery fabric (multiple choices to choose from).
• Red Liner Tape

Supplies for students to bring:
Stickers, Rub-ons, scrapbook papers (approximately 12 sheets), or any papers that you want to incorporate into your book. Size doesn’t matter for this, but they should be a minimum of 10” wide. to incorporate between the white pages in the book. These are important to bring along as they are a part of the design of the book that makes it more interesting than just white pages. Plus, it makes it fun to put together. In my book, I used ink pads to antique the paper edges. You may do that also, if you like. Bring ink pads.

Scissor, Paper Cutter, Ruler
Japanese Screw Punch or Awl (for punching holes to bind)
Old credit card or scraper for smearing glue
Bull Dog Clips (approx. 1 dozen)
Bottle of Elmer’s Glue (not student type) or your favorite glue
