Important Note: Although the three Evidence of Mermaids workshops have been designed to be combined, each project is its own separate class. Students can take any combination of 1, 2, or all 3 workshops!

The myths and images of mermaids have captivated countless artists around the globe and throughout the ages, and I am certainly no exception. In this series of 3 workshops we shall indulge this "fishy" attraction, examine some inspiring mermaid “tales,” and create a beautiful trio of art-ifacts that appear to have been recently rescued from the deep blue depths after being tucked away under the sea by one of these beautiful, awe-inspiring, and ever mysterious creatures.

In this workshop, we’ll construct a beautiful mermaid themed version of my original all-metal journal binding with covers of beveled glass and watercolor paper. After we fabricate the glass and metal book completely "from scratch", we’ll cover it with transparent photos, which are included, but students are invited to bring a more personalized image for their covers, if desired. Just print out any 2 photos you like onto transparency sheets at 4.25" sq. Glass in kit is pre-drilled but bring your own Dremel and a 1/8" diamond drill bit if you want to try your hand at drilling glass in class. Technical instruction includes drilling glass, metal fabrication, alteration of metal with torch and patina, basic bookbinding terminology, use of various hand tools, tool safety, and much more! This journal will fit perfectly into the Mermaid Treasure Box (Part I) and looks absolutely delightful adorned with the Mermaid Bracelet (Part III)

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

16 sheets of 90# (or heavier) watercolor paper torn to 4" x 7.5 (Feel free to paint, stamp, collage, color, or otherwise decorate with mermaid theme
