In this class, I will share with you my favorite materials and techniques for creating amazing, messy, mixed media backgrounds. We’ll add images of people we find in catalogs and/or magazines for incorporating them into our backgrounds as a way to “cheat” without having to draw them in and transform them into our angels. First, we’ll create our own unique collage paper using various media (oil pastel, acrylic paint, stamps) on vintage papers as well as deli paper. Then, we’ll build up the backgrounds of our journal pages with oil pastels, watercolor and collage using our own unique collage paper, vintage book paper, and patterned tissue paper. We will also explore how to save pages in our journals that aren’t “working” or we don’t quite like by building up messy layers over “not so precious” backgrounds; it’s a great way to let go and enjoy the intuitive, mess making process!) Then we’ll add our cut-out magazine image and paint over it with acrylic paint pens, outlining it and bringing back some of the details with a stabilo marks-all pencil. Finally, we’ll add more layers with the paint pens, collage and oil pastels, and a word or phrase to bring it all together.

Materials Fee $ _10 payable to instructor at beginning of class Includes the following:
Sample collage paper pack kit, plus use of shared materials including: stencils, spray ink, acrylic paint, stamps, deli paper, washi tape, paint pens, magazines/catalogs

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:
*Large, spiral-bound art journal (at least a 9x12” or larger), preferably one with heavy weight, mixed media paper (such as Strathmore Mixed Media or Canson XL)
*small scissors & glue stick
*Stabilo Marks-all pencil in black and
*Acrylic paint pens (like Liquitex or Montana in your favorite colors and widths). I like the 15mm (large tip) in: Neon Pink, Neon Orange, Lime Green, Aqua, White, Black, Red)
*Oil pastels (any brand, cheap Crayola set is great and my favorite!)
*White-out pen or Sharpie water-based fine tip paint pen
*It would be nice if some of your journal pages were prepped ahead of time with some random sprays of ink through stencils and some marks with oil pastel, with some of the white page still showing through, but it’s not necessary as we will also be doing this prep in class
Optional items:
*stencils, unmounted or foam texture stamps, spray ink, acrylic paint, vintage and/or collage paper, patterned tissue paper, washi tape, images of women from magazines (or animals, objects, etc that you would like to include in addition to or instead of the women) (these items will be provided to share but you may wish to bring your own if you have special colors or items that you really like to work with)
