3091 - Beautiful Paper Quilts

Creating paper quilts bring in the best elements of paper arts, collage and fiber arts wrapped up in one artwork. We'll begin by learning some techniques using paints, inks, stencils and rubber stamps to embellish papers you bring to give your artwork a more personal voice.

Elements of design and concepts in composition will be covered when we begin to build free form art quilts.  We'll move on to sewing and discuss how line is used in composition (whether you choose real or fake sewing). Just to add the odd element of fun, we'll also be making "bobblies" (fabric charms) using fabric and paper scraps. Along with a textural, colorful artwork, you'll take home techniques and inspiration from this class. You may bring a sewing machine or choose hand sewing. I will have a machine to share with the class.

Supply List:

• Journal or note book

   

   

• Cutting mat
• X-Acto's
• scissors
• Ruler
• 3 colors (at least) of re-inkers or bottled ink
• Patterend/ decorative papers for further embellishing
• Awl
• Double Sided tape
• Glue Stick
• Fabric scraps (smaller than 4 sq inches) 4-6 scraps should
• Stuffing material (Just pack a small ziplock full)
• Sewing Machine, w/thread & bobbins
• Embroidery needles (check the diameter of needles, they should be smaller than awl size.  Also check needle size with holes in beads.)
• Embroidery thread
• Regular strong thread

Extra Materials (you may want to have some – or all – of the following on hand).  Don't overwhelm yourself with too much stuff. Think about items you love to work with or would like to learn to work with

• Pencils (colored and regular)
• Pens
• Markers
• Stamps and Stamp Pads
• Stencils
• crayons
• watercolor or acrylic paints
• Found Images
• Small beads, buttons, embellishments, collage items (as desired) yarn, ribbon, trims, roving, silk cocoons, silk rods, bark, etc.

Any other items that you’d like to bring. I will bring one sewing machine. I will demo embroidery stitches and hand stitching so a machine is nice but not absolute necessary.

Materials fee includes: Japanese paper squares 6"; Embroidery Threads/Needles; Heavy weight art paper; Colored papers; Light weight paper for piecing; Fun Foam (for piercing); Patterns for bobblies; Extra Fabric scraps; Freezer Wrap (or other protective non-stick materials for drying coated papers); Polymer Varnish for coating papers
