Altering The Surface: techniques for creating unique and mysterious facades for book works. Have you ever wanted to make wooden, full leather, ceramic or steel book and felt it would be too difficult or entail too many tools? This is your chance to learn a few tricks to disguise typical bookmaking materials with just a few tools and easily obtained supplies. Although the focus of the workshop will be book arts, some of the techniques can be applied to other media including jewelry, sculpture, mixed media, wood working and even pottery. We will use a variety of veneers, paints, adhesives and other concoctions to achieve our desired faux exteriors. By creating covers that have at least visual weight and strength we will need to bind them with a strong archival binding. The two needle Ethiopian binding is a versatile, durable and elegant sewing. Come and learn a new stitch and/or learn a few techniques to improve your own knowledge and mastery of the binding.
