3106 - Simple Metal Jewelry- Bent, Beaded & Balled

[back to quicklinks]
$ 145 Plus $20 materials fee

Are some of the techniques used to create this simple yet powerful jewelry using copper, brass, colorful tin litho, wire, assorted beads, a torch, some found materials, a few tools and your own imagination. This class is one in a series and works really well with our other class: Simple Metal Jewelry: Sawn, Tabbed & Snagged but is not dependent on it. We will focus on pendants, but everything can just as easily be adapted to earrings. You will learn to cut metal into shapes, bend and form it to fit your design, marry tin litho to metal sheet, drill it, patina with a torch and draw bead, create tin charms, beads and dangles, incorporate objects and make attachments using both hot and cold connections. We will explore different ways to etch and pattern metal and cut small windows without using a jewelers saw. We will begin this class with various demos and then work with you hands-on for the rest of the day. There are unlimited design possibilities so there is something in this class for everyone, proving the adage that sometimes less IS more!

Note: Simple Metal Jewelry: Sawn, Tabbed & Snagged is an entirely different class with entirely different techniques and while both classes work very well together, each can be taken independent of the other.

A material fee of $20.00 includes all of your sheet metals, tin litho, rivet materials, use of the torch, other incidentals and more.

Students Supply List: (items with an *can be purchased from our website or etsy shop)

·        *tin shears.

·        *2-hole metal punch (or a fiskars hand drill or rotary drill with a 1/16” bit – if you go this route, bring a small wood block and a clamp).

·        *jewelry pliers (a set of round, chain, flat & cutters will give you everything you need).

·        *metal files.

·        *hammer (a metal head hammer with a ball on one end to texture with).

·        *steel bench block (if you don’t have a cushion or sandbag to absorb sound – bring a facecloth).

·        a spool of 18 or 20 ga. copper wire from the hardware store as it CANNOT be coated. Note: craft wire or brass wire will NOT work with a torch.

·        For embellishment: assorted metal & non metal beads in various shapes & sizes that 18 gauge wire will go through for color, contrast and to dangle.

* if for whatever reason, you’d rather work with sterling wire, you’d want 1 oz. of dead soft 18 or 20 gauge sterling silver wire from a jewelry supply like rio grande.

Optional:

·        *a mini eyelet setter (we prefer the one with the lip on it-but only if you have one).

·        a small 1/4” flat head screwdriver or cold-chisel and a small wood block
