3005 - Tin Men

[back to quicklinks]
$ 145 Plus $20 materials fee

Of all the characters in The Wizard of Oz, Tin Man was always my favorite with his gentle heart so beautifully belied by his hard, rusty exterior. In this class, students bring a porcelain doll head and hands of their liking, and create their very own tin man. Instruction is given in altering the doll head with texturizing spray paints, two-part resin clay, metallic surfacing agents, torch techniques, and the application of chemical patinas as well as various sheet metal fabrication techniques, including slip-rolling, punching, cutting, drilling, cold-connection hardware, as well as basic torching & altering of
copper & brass with torches & patina.

Tools & Supplies
Students will need to supply a porcelain doll head and hands of their own liking, and bring tin snips, a drill or Dremel tool with assorted drill bits, sanding barrels, and cut-off wheels (a grinding stone can be helpful too), wire cutters, needle nose pliers, and both phillip's and flat head screwdrivers.

Optional tools: Torch,clay sculpting tools, hammer and bench block, hand punch, eyelet setter,
embossing gun, nutdriver set.

Materials fee includes: wooden base, brass & copper sheet metal, all-thread, hardware, chain, metallic surfacing paints, patina, copper wire, two-part resin clay, copper pipe, spray texturizers, and a tin heart (of course).
