H133 - "Crack Up"

$ 140

Some of us are like ravens – spying the sparkle in the grass and, with tunnel vision, swooping in to snatch the glitz. Others of us are more inclined towards the humble signs of aging – worn paint and layers of patina. If you are on who swoons at the sight of a cracked fresco wall unable to keep from running your hands over it, than this workshop is a perfect fit!
We can’t all live in houses with aged walls and layers of time-worn character, so for those of you who long for such flavor in your space, join me for a day of creating our own cracked plaster surfaces on which we will paint, sand, age, patina, collage, burn, encase in wax, and so forth. These surfaces can be used in a variety of ways (as book pages, wall hangings, as encaustic substrates and so on) but we will be creating our very own portions of fresco salvage using plaster, burlap, stretched canvas, and other humble materials. Come prepared to get a bit messy and leave with evidence of  a hundred years of history in your pack…or so your friends will think!

Student Supply List:

  • Basic Art kit (scissors, pen, pencil etc).

  • 1-2 yards burlap (available at Joanne’s, Walmart and other fabric stores. Colored is fine, though I recommend tan or white for neutrality)

  • 8 oz. tub of Soft Gel Medium
  • Stretched canvases (size is up to you and determined by what you are comfortable traveling with. If you bring 8x8 or smaller, I recommend bringing 3-5 at least. I also encourage you to experiment with odd sizes and a-typical proportions for your canvases)
  • Plastic trowel/putty knife 3-6 inches wide (found at hardware stores)
  • Artist brushes
  • 1-2 inexpensive “chip” or “hog bristle” brushes (1-2 inch from the hardware store)
  • rag
  • Various acrylics in your favorite colors including black and burnt umber
  • Brayer
  • Miscellaneous imagery (black and white or color laser/toner copies are great)

Optional Supplies:

Heat gun, hair dryer, or mini toaster oven

Materials Provided by the Instructor:

  • Latex gloves
  • Extra burlap
  • Sandpapers and abrasives
  • Plasters and additives
  • Waxes and sealers
