No matter what the old saying may warn us against, in fact we do often judge the book by its cover. For this project however, that’s no problem since the cover is the book and the book is the cover! The content of your book can be in pictures or print, symbols or secret markings. You are the author/maker – editor and publisher!
In this fast-paced workshop you will learn to work with Faux Bone and fashion a book/cover that can be stamped with metal stamps, dimensionally embossed with rubber stamps, colored with paint, colored pencils, alcohol inks and lots of other materials. You will learn to inlay epoxies and wires, and collage with just about any paper images. Faux Bone is so strong you can rivet metal, tin, wood or found objects right on to it with no fear of cracking or splitting.
You will then learn to make a set of wire hinges that will allow your book to open in any number of ways. Your book can be finished with a latch, bound with leather or even hung on a chain or cord.
The patina you can achieve with Faux Bone can look as old as antique ivory, as rustic as wood or as bright and new as stark white tile.
Participants can expect to finish at least one book/cover with materials left over for more exploration after class. A kit fee of $20 will be paid to the instructor at the beginning of the class.
Supplies Needed for Class:
• Jeweler’s saw (I will have special blades for cutting Faux Bone and anything else except metal)
• Bench pin for sawing
• Round and flat nose pliers
• Medium file (not needle file) half round is best
• Craft knife and/or scissors for cutting paper
• Collage items (paper, ephemera, images, photographs, anything you may want to include)
• Paint (acrylic are best), or coloring agents of your choosing (Prysmacolors colored pencils, alcohol inks, shoe polish, etc.)
• Round faced hammer (ball peen or similar)

• Electric engraver
• Sheet metal to attach to your book (tin, copper, silver, scrap)
• Found objects
• Letter stamps
• Rubber stamps
• Old jewelry
• Beads, bangles, buttons and bows
