813 - Knot Now, Nina

[back to quicklinks]
$ 130 Plus $10 materials fee

Students that have taken my jewelry workshops for the past five or so years have begun calling my heavily wrapped wire link technique the “Nina knot”; and by this time, I’ve given in and now call them that as well.  I’ve watched student after student pull up his/her chair to my table andmouth set in that universal expression of sheer determination and concentration, I’ve also watched the look of frustration transform into one of excitement and surprised pleasure.  So?  This time  around, I’ll be offering an entire workshop focused on the nina knot technique, with a hook and eye clasp thrown in as good “closure”.  One knot is lengthened into a lovely link section I’ve dubbed my “honeysuckle vine” chain.  Another link is a wire-wrapped organza fabric (any small length of soft, thin fabric will do).  We’ll also draw some beading, with small portable torches, from silver wire, for attachment of pearls and other beads you bring for charms to embellish your bracelet/choker (the two bracelets can be linked together and worn as a short choker).

Supply List:

--Assorted pearls, beads and charms you’ll wish to use (spare selection; remember, less is more, and not nearly as confusing).
--9.5 feet 20 gauge dead soft sterling round wire (allows for mistakes, and is minimum footage purchase allowed); item # 100-320, ordered from http://riogrande.com/, ph. is 1-800-545-6566 (copper wire--same gauge--if you wish, is a much less expensive alternative, and can be found in the picture hanging sections of hardware stores or ordered from http://volcanoarts.biz/index.html
--up to 10 3/4” wide strips of thin fabric strips, your choice of color
--scissors
--small pair round nosed jewelry pliers
--small pair bent nosed jewelry pliers
--small pair jewelry wire cutters – all three of these can be purchased at a discount from http://volcanoarts.biz/cart/wire/index.htm#PliersCutters
--bench block, small for traveling – good, lightweight one can be purchased from, you guessed it, Volcano Arts
--metallic seed beads, optional

Optional:
  Christine (volcano arts) sells small butane torches.  You may want to order one here http://volcanoarts.biz/cart/metalsmithing/index.htm#BlowTorch and bring to class (EMPTY, if you are getting on a plane!) so that you won’t have to stand in line to wait your turn.  Otherwise, I’ll be bringing a few for the class to use.

Materials fee includes: use of butane fuel for torches; several small sterling links; 5-6 feet of 24 gauge sterling wire (for wrapped fabric beads, and for bead drawing for the pearl hanging); a small square of polishing paper cloth; liver of sulfur oxidizing solution; and a few assorted pearls to get you started (you’ll bring your own from home)

*Please, please - I beg of you – make sure to go ahead and order your supplies early.  In other words, don’t wait until two weeks before classes begin, so that the suppliers won’t be hit with a barrage of frantic customers, and there won’t be a mad last minute rush or an unfortunate risk of back orders.  It isn’t fair to the supplier, or to the rest of the class when everyone is having to scramble to help those who came to class empty-handed.  Thanks!  See you there!
