"Diarist's Sectional: A Daily Aide" An Experimental Visual Journal in Artist Book Format
Section 1-Foundation: Begin by creating incredible backgrounds on thin cardstock (provided) using fast paced mixed media techniques (bring rollers or big brushes if you have them for quick coverage). These larger boards are then cut into smaller “sectionals” to insert into the cut sleeves of a “found” book. Section 2-Construction: Create “sleeves” to insert the “sectionals“ into the found book. The newly created “sectionals” become pages or flags that reveal multiple page layers in an exciting new format. Section 3-Visual Journalism/Content: “Lost in translation” Learn to enter selected journal writings (based on homework--see below) into these books in a “daily diary” fashion. Utilizing the “Extreme Visual Journaling” techniques developed by Juliana Coles, work back and forth, from the written journals into the textured backgrounds of the “sectional” by combining writing with art making exercises designed to access inner information. Learn to push and pull--losing and rediscovering your images and stories as you concentrate on the greater whole. Discover, in the mundane routine of your everyday lives, your own exquisite personal symbolism. All participants receive a Me & Peteâ Diarist’s Sectional Handbook.
Supply List: Your 'found' book-- please no smaller than 8” x10”. This book can be an old text book, illustrated book or even a blank journal. Do NOT remove the pages until class. Bring your favorite mixed media supplies. Bring your favorite glue, a metal cork backed ruler, travel size self healing cutting board, mat knife, rubber stamp letters and numbers ( if you don’t have them, get them, all journalists should have at least one set of each.), scissors, some brushes for your paints, a rag or two, and a jar for water. Please bring your favorite supplies and collage items (use copies of things that are precious to you), one or two magazines, at least two acrylic paint colors ( you do not need a whole set of anything)- one light & one dark. Please bring at least 2 markers in any color-try two different kinds and thicknesses ( like a brush marker and a permanent-these will probably get ruined), one black permanent marker, 2 colored pencils (a light color like white or peach or light blue plus any vibrant color or your favorite color, a regular graphite pencil (a number 2 is fine or get yourself a graphite stick, or an ebony or 6b), at least two stamp pads--a light color like white and a Staz-On (any color) the rest is up to you....bring some of your favorite things. Bring some things you’ve always wanted to try but never got around to it- like some precious paint or inks. Just make sure you have a few wet items, and some dry items to experiment with in a few different colors. Whatever calls to you, bring it. If you need more specific suggestions, please email me.
Homework: This is easy. Keep a diary for at least a week- seven days. You may want to make your entries in the evening. Just jot down the events of the day. Don’t worry about being poetic, spelling, or grammar. Just make a few notes to yourself and they don’t have to be very detailed. 'Monday, April 30th: salsa aerobics, wrote up my proposal for Art & Soul Virginia, ate spicy food and didn’t sleep again.' You can be more personal than this or not-- don’t worry about what you write or don’t write, this is just a jump starting point for our sectional. You can list five things, or you can write an essay. You can also use your “morning pages” for this assignment. Feel free to say anything, as we will not be reading these in class. We are more concerned with the translation- of picking and choosing various items from our journals to enter into our visual journals. And if you don’t have time and just show up and write down a few things from memory- that will be fine too. Please email Juliana Coles with any questions or concerns: meandpete@msn.com
