833 - Light Bulb Shrines

[back to quicklinks]
$ 130

Ever wonder what to do with all those old lightbulbs? Well, I now have an answer: make art, of course! Using a burnt out lightbulb, we’ll be creating tiny shrines not only by adorning the exterior of the bulb but inserting imagery inside the glass bulb as well. Basically, we’ll be doing a ship-in-a-bottle sort of thing--but don’t worry, it’ll be much easier than that. All this will be done using a mixture of collage, painting, and assemblage. You’ll never look at a burnt out lightbulb the same way. See the light?

Supply List:

-- Scissors and cutting tools

-- Basic tools such as pliers, etc.

-- Brushes (acrylic)--smaller and detail

-- Acrylic Matte Medium--or any adhesive for collage

-- Paint (acrylic--small tubes): Black, White, Quinacridone Gold, Pthalo Green, and other basic colors

-- A few different kinds of glues--clear : (E 6000 or Liquid Nails Clear) and  Liquid Nails original formula (red tab on label)

-- Small do dads, found objects, collage items and photos.

-- Burnt-out lightbulbs (clear)

--Bring various item that you would like to use on your shrine.  This could be anything--jewelry, fake flowers, price tags, watch parts, shoelaces, fake eyelashes, etc.)   As I said, anything. Remember, smaller objects or items that can be broken down would be most appropriate. We'll have a communal pile of do-dads that students are willing to share with others in the class...so, looks like it's time to clean out those dresser drawers.

Optional items or suggestions to enhance the class project:

--Basic tools, such as pliers, screwdrivers, etc.

--Heatgun

--Dremel tool (cordless if you have it)

--Palette Paper or pallete

Instructor will provide:

--Power tools – drill, dremel tool, etc.

--Basic tools

--A whole bunch of doodads.

--Extra paint

--Extra glue

--Good music to work by
