837 - Hand-Lettered Bali Festival Lantern

[back to quicklinks]
$ 130 Plus $10 materials fee

On the island of Bali, the entire village prepares for festival days by making lanterns out of paper--children stamping and painting good wishes and blessings on the four sides. They are hung by the thousands throughout the town. Join me and play! Get your hands wet with paint, learn to letter on fabric and make a beautiful hanging lantern. (It collapses down flat for easy storage and transport!) In this class, you will create your own hand lettered festival lantern out of lightweight muslin or gauze. We will begin by learning Italic, a traditional style of lettering, and also a fun and funky freeform style that you can use in many ways. Various tools for lettering will be introduced and multiple types of media for use on all surfaces. The backgrounds of our fabric will be washed with bright colors, stamped and then lettered with our favorite words, quotes or blessings. The lantern will be assembled and sewn with brightly colored threads and tassels by the end of the day. Come and have fun!

Supply List:
--at least two yards of cotton muslin, cut into 4 rectangles ahead of time (8x11 1/2”--this is the size I did—you may do any size you’d like--taller/ skinnier, your choice). You may want to use some pre-printed cotton fabric, but remember that we’re going to letter and embellish it, so not too busy a pattern
--four pieces of lightweight cardboard, not corrugated. (Also not too flimsy, as these support the lantern, and not too thick to sew through) Cut 4 of them 7 X10 1/2 “ (If you choose another size, cut these 1/2 inch smaller all around than your fabric)
--a few of your favorite acrylic paints (I will also have a lot to share)
--FW and Pearlescent Acrylic Inks, a couple colors and white FW acrylic
--one pen holder and a C02 Speedball pen nib-at Michaels
