850 - Illuminating a Manuscript Muse

[back to quicklinks]
$ 120

Are you ready to have some fun, dance with your muse and, while we’re at it, exchange some great art techniques?  We are going to tap into the creative mind, mix it up with inventive mediums such as GAC 100 and produce an homage to the art of our soul in the same manner as those artistic monks of long ago in their illuminated manuscripts.

In this class we are going to seamlessly incorporate embossed wallpaper with layers of pattern, gesso, muted tones and a sheer metallic that we will mix using my own recipe.  We will combine this soft and lovely patina with a little unconventional gilding to give our creation that same hint of glow found in antique books.  Although not intentional of offering an altered book class, we will be using a prepared opened book as our substrate to provide us with an easily manipulated, sturdy surface.  The existing text will randomly weave through our mélange of pattern, paper and collage to provide word adventure to reminiscent of dream conversations.  To add a little more spice, we will also be enhancing images stamped in black ink, create frames around brass mesh to look delicate despite its rough edges and so much more.  It really is all about having fun because that’s where the art is at.

Supply List:
--Prepared book of any size that feels comfortable to work on (email instructor at rosecottagedes@msn.com for instructions on preparing book)
--Embossed wallpaper (Samples large enough for use can be obtained for free from most large chain home decorating stores)

--A foreign currency bill or similar single unit with designs that interest you
--Gesso
--Matte Medium

--Heat gun

* No matter what metallic you choose to embellish with, it might be a good idea to make sure that the Pearl Ex and gilding leaf you decide on are compatible (i.e. you might not want to mix copper gilding with gunmetal Pearl Ex, but, then again….)

**New mediums that will be introduced in this class will be provided
OPTIONAL:  If you have a CD of music that just always makes you feel like creating art, bring it along to class and share it with the rest of us.
