In this process workshop, students will learn the basics of working with plaster and plaster-like products for the purpose of creating deep texture in their 2-dimensional artwork. The focus will be on in-depth exploration of texturing techniques with trowels, sculpting and casting techniques, painting, tinting, sanding, carving, rolling, etching and writing into plaster. Students will also learn and experiment with various plaster recipes for use in different forms of artwork such as wood, canvas, altered books, jewelry and more.
Supply List: --Putty knife; 2-4 inches wide; plastic or metal --1.75 pound package of Sculpey Clay, oven dry --Apron --Masking tape --Rags (2-3); an old t-shirt is ideal --Awl --Exacto knife --Scissors --Acrylic Paints in your choice of colors --1-2 Chip brushes (1-2 inch) --Artist Brushes for detail work --2 sheets of sandpaper - 1 @ 80 grit, 1 @ 120 grit --Metal spoon - preferably larger for mixing plaster --3-dimensional hard objects for casting such as buttons, shells, decorative hardware, etc.
Optional Materials: --Sculpting tools used for clay sculpting --Hair dryer --Artist pallet knives --Plastic container for mixing plaster --Paring knife --Paper Ephemera such as images and old book pages
Materials fee includes: plaster and plaster products; wood substrates; protective supplies (dust masks, gloves, etc.)
