Spend a whole delicious day with your journal! We’ll play games that I’ve invented especially for my Journaling classes. You’ll draw, write, play with color, line, words and have a (written) conversation with your inner critic. Japanese paper marbling, simple watercoloring, drawing tips, working in layers with collage and resists, location work and creating your own special symbol as a carved stamp will be some of the things we’ll do. Learning new techniques that you can use in many different artworks will be balanced with giving you time and space to explore and understand these techniques, and to listen to yourself and observe your world.
Supplies:
Along with irreverence, courage and a devil-may-care attitude, please bring:
--Your journal/sketchbook! Should have smooth heavy paper suitable for watercolor. Spiral bound is nice as it lies flat
--A couple of Waterproof Black Pens (.005, .01, .03 – whatever line thickness you like) I like Micron’s pens.
--Writing pen(s) (if you’d like something different than the black pen above
--Charcoal Pencil 4B or 6B
--Drawing pencil 4B or 6B
Color Media:
--Watercolors (at least 3 basic colors – I use the tubes, but bring whatever setup you have) Winsor Yellow, Quin Red (or Rose) and Winsor or Phthalo blue
--Watercolor Palette (you can get a plastic case that has wells in it for very cheap.)
--Crayons, oil pastels
--A small spray bottle is nice for wetting your paints.
--Mastercarve carving block (a small piece 4x4” will be plenty)
--Speedball carving tool (if you are only bringing one, bring the small size gouge
--2 plastic containers for water & paint rag
--Watercolor brushes (whatever sizes you like, you can get cheap sets @ craft stores)
--Japanese brush - 2 (at least) Japanese Brushes (Bamboo, size 4, bristle dia. 7/32” x length 1 1/16” is good on average) (3-5 brushes = less brush cleaning)
--Stamp Pads 1 Yellow and your favorite color (if you don’t have, don’t buy them special. I will have extras.
--Any other media you like to use in your journal. (caran d’ache, oil pastels, rubber stamps w/pads, colored pencils, etc.)
--Collage bits and pieces if you use collage (patterned paper scraps are nice, photocopies of photographs or other images (animal, vegetable, mineral), pictures from magazines. Whatever you have on hand. Don’t bring too much, as I’ll be bringing some to share as well.
Materials fee includes: all papers to be used for Japanese marbling, including use of resist media, sumi-e ink, suminagashi inks; bits and pieces for collage.
