1128 - Creative Outlets

[back to quicklinks]
$ 135

Not long ago I was rummaging through a scrap yard and in a large box was a huge pile of electrical outlets. Immediately the cogs in my head started turning…or more appropriately, the light bulb went on over my head. I thought how wonderful these would be as the base for little nichos. Within an hour a new series was born.

In this class students will become electrical transformers (I know, bad joke). You will take one of the most uninteresting, utilitarian objects….the electrical outlet, and change it into something that does absolutely nothing that it was intended for. It will still transfer energy, but not in the same way. Instead these creations will transfer the energy that is only created by art…one of the most powerful forces in the world.

Don’t worry if you have no assemblage background… trust me when I say that by the end of class your piece will be all the buzz (I know, another bad joke….watt do you expect…ok I’ll stop).

Supply List:
1. Paint:
--Titanium White
--Mars Black
--Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold
--Quin Crimson
--Dioxazine Purple
--Pthalo Green (blue shade)
--Paynes Gray
--iridescent, or interfererence colors by Golden (pick a couple you might like to work with…Interference Blue is nice and the Iridescent Stainless Steel is pretty nifty too).
2. A few Electrical Outlets…you know, the thing that you plug cords into. Hardware stores have new ones, so try second hand stores first for cheapies.
3. Brushes
--Cheap 1 inch-ish
--Fine detail brushes
4. Glues
--Liquid Nails Small Projects
--Liquid Nails Clear…or E6000
5. Cutting tools
--Scissors or an exacto
6. Ephemera and collage items. You could also bring fabric and transparencies also.
7. A variety of found objects and doodads….and when I say variety, I mean variety. Anything that has an interesting shape, pattern or color would be good.
8. Wire: electrical or otherwise. Twine would work too.

Optional:
--Heat gun
--Dremel with cutoff wheels
--Basic tools like pliers, wire cutters, etc.

CLOSED - CLASS FULL
