1176 - "My Precioussss..." (Introduction to Precious Metal Clay)

[back to quicklinks]
$ 135 Plus $45 materials fee

Turn clay into precious metal? Must be magic! No, its Precious Metal Clay most commonly referred to as PMC. This ingenious clay is molded into a desired form, air dried and then kiln-fired to a .999 pure silver state. Following a simple finishing process, the result is a durable, wearable work of art! In this introductory workshop we will be using PMC+ to design 2-dimensional objects for use in jewelry design (such as pendants and earrings), although PMC may also be used to create bookplates and decorative elements which can be included in bookbinding, shadow boxes, etc. Likewise, for all you found-object, resin, plaster and bead artists, PMC is an excellent choice for collaborative mediums. Additional PMC + will be available for purchase should students get clay crazy! Following a brief demonstration and explanation of the medium in the morning, students will jump right in and create their pieces prior to the lunch break as the pieces will need time to air dry during lunch (this means our lunch will begin later, i.e., l2:30'ish instead of noon). After lunch we will load the kiln and discuss the firing process. While our pieces are firing in the kilns, we will continue our discussion about the unlimited possibilities of this fantastic medium. Following the firing process, students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of finishing options for their one-of-a-kind baubles!
