H178 - Soy Wax Batik with Paint

[back to quicklinks]
$ 140

We will use the soy wax to create batik like effects on cloth. Paint makes this medium fun and approachable. Wax is a resist, so we will explore and exploit its ability to trap previously applied colors, while building new and exciting layers of color. Soy wax is an ecologically safe, food grade wax, unlike paraffin it can be completely, and safely, washed out of the cloth in your home washing machine, no harsh chemicals or dry cleaning needed! This is a highly addictive way to create pattern on cloth.

Supplies Needed:

  • Opaque acrylic paints are preferred, some paints are specifically formulated to give a soft hand on cloth, either type works well. My preferred brand is Lumiere And Neopaque but I encourage you to work within your own budget and needs.
  • 2 -5 yards white 100% cotton cloth
  • 2 sets of ½”, 1” and 2” foam and bristle brushes; the inexpensive type you can get in major hardware stores, 1 Set will be used with paint, the other will go in the wax pot,
  • plastic drop cloth,
  • 2 large yogurt cup for rinsing brushes and having clean water nearby
  • apron

Optional items:

Spray bottle, decent round #6 watercolor brush,

Materials Fee: $15.00 payable to the instructor includes:  soy wax, melting pot, the use of my tools during class
