H125 - Etching on Copper, Silver and Brass

[back to quicklinks]
$ 140

In this workshop you will learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about etching metal including new technology that uses easy, non-hazardous solutions for electro-etching.  Learn how to etch on copper, brass, sterling silver, even metal clay!  The class will include a copper shape or sheet that can be used to make a finished piece.  The etched sheet can be cut to make jewelry pieces or used as a textured press mold for polymer or metal clay.  We will demonstrate a variety of resist methods including simple ways to doodle on the metal. As a bonus the class will include how to punch holes in the copper and then a riveting demonstration. You will leave the class with a completed copper piece ready to hang from your own cord or chain. You are welcome to bring your own metal pieces to etch on including sheet silver, metal clay pieces (silver, copper or bronze) or brass.

$25 Kit fee payable to the instructor includes:

Copper blank or sheet, eyelets, images, resist pen, etching solution and supplies

Students please bring:

  • Scissors
  • Design ideas for freehand work if you would like
  • Small metal block for riveting, small hammer and eyelet setting tool if you have it
  • Optional:  Cord or chain, findings for finishing a bracelet or necklace, beads to embellish
