Journalography is a one-day class focused on using mixed media techniques to create art journal spreads. These pages are not about using text to express your thoughts and feelings but rather about unleashing your artist voice though visual expression. Working in your current or an all-new journal, we will start by using the Gel Plate to create backgrounds with depth that will serve as the perfect base to work over. We will then add paint, collage, stamps, stencils, and handmade marks to build our pages layer by layer. I will share my journal process which includes clustering, extending, integrating, contrasting, and more. Although the process will be the same for all participants, the end result will be unique to each of you as we work together to enable you to work more freely, tap into your artistic voice, and let your creativity spill on the page.

Metal clay consists of fine silver, water and an organic binder. It is a clay-like substance that can be rolled, sculpted and cut into almost any shape. It can be combined with many materials, including fireable gemstones. After firing, using either a torch/bunsen burner or a kiln, the water and binder burn away, leaving only precious, fine silver. Jewelry made of metal clay can be worn and enjoyed for many years.
: If you have always been curious about this fascinating medium but haven’t had the chance to try it, this class is for you. Students will learn the basics about working with this material, then will design and make a pendant or pair of dangle earrings. They will then learn to torch fire their pieces so that they can continue their metal clay journey at home, even if they do not have a kiln.

Doll Making Workshop
From a very early age, my head has been populated by "monsters". From Sesame Street and the Muppets to H.R. Pufnstuff, not to mention a steady diet of campy creature features from the early days of sci-fi and horror cinema. These characters ended up being much-beloved companions for myself, and many other "latch-key kids" raised by television.
So, to pay tribute the monsters in my closet and under my bed, I have developed a comprehensive doll-making workshop that attempts to re-imagine those lovable and loud, wild and weird monsters of my youth.
Also... as away to reach out to the next generation of artists, if this workshop is one that might appeal to a young person in your life, please bring them with you to class... for free! Yes, that's right, one child under 18 yrs, may attend this workshop with one paid adult attendee, free of charge. I'll even provide their kit! While I will endeavor to empower and encourage you to sculpt your doll into a "monstrous" form, the techniques and skills acquired and developed in this course can ultimately be applied to any style of doll making!
What... not everyone loves monsters?
On day 1, students will learn how to fabricate a one-wire doll armature that can be articulately posed and sculpted upon with many different materials. After that, I will show you how to craft a virtually indestructible figural base substrate.
On day 2, students will get insanely useful tips and tricks for cutting patterns for optimal base form coverage, painting techniques to make things look less "painted", and tricks for employing other found objects and materials to create durable, poseable, unusual, fascinating, (scary?), but entertaining dolls.
I am hoping to see lots of different outcomes from students in this workshop, as there is a ton of room for the unique and individualized interpretation of this project.
For more pictures of my monsters and other useful information, please visit blacksheepartist.com

Using wooden, sewing spools as a base, we will paint, ink, stamp, mark make, stitch, and ultimately wind our way to mixed media mayhem. This workshop will focus on surface design, with an emphasis on creating loosely and without overthinking. We will start by hand-stitching together your choice of paper and fabric to create long strands to work over. Following this, we will apply mixed media techniques to create a unique design, filled edge-to-edge and end-to-end with your favorite colors, personal symbols, and both hand-drawn and stamped marks. We will each complete multiple spools, allowing for many different display options – both free-standing and hung. Spools will be provided but you are asked to bring your own paper, fabric and thread to further personalize your creation.

What exactly IS a shaman? Well, basically, a shaman is an individual who has access to, and influence in, the world of benevolent (and sometimes, malevolent) spirits. They are the world's mystics who travel through altered states of consciousness in order to perceive and interact with the world beyond the physical and act as a channel of transcendental energies into this one.
In this workshop, students will attempt to capture some of the ephemeral essence of these magical beings in a relatively easy, but very well-built, and aesthetically evocative figural assemblage totem.
While chatting and discussing the different shamanic traditions from around the world, students will cut, drill and fasten wooden components to fashion a rock-solid frame, build poseable limbs, and put a cool head from a doll, an animal skull, or some other headpiece that may have meaning in your sprit world on the top. After that, I will share with you, my process for approaching all figure-building, with the hopes that I can your "artist shaman" for the day, and teach you how to use the power of the shaman to open new creative doors of endless possibility. To wrap up, we'll accessorize our shamans with some found objects, chains, charms, and/or strings of cool beads and cool stuff! Lots of room for individual expression upon the basic form here, and there are plenty of techniques to expand your skill set, as well as some new ways of thinking about how composition and construction work together in a piece of art.
Materials Fee $25 paid at beginning of class includes:
wood base
dowels
armature wire
epoxy clay
screws, nuts, & bolts as needed
tape, glue, paint as needed

one skull (or a cool doll head, or other meaningful object)

Let’s relax and have a joyful day of stitching! This is a low-stress class in which I will guide you through color selection and easy stitches to make a lovely, tiny piece of art. Read the note in the supply list, please!
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
*Note* - This is not a freehand machine stitching class using a sewing machine. It is a day of relaxed slow stitching by hand. I will teach you all my tips and tricks to make adorable little art pieces that are very easy to travel with. I have made a ton of them on airplanes! I will have a bunch of the freehand characters available for purchase if you wish (optional). I also have an online class if you want to make the little characters yourself at home before this event. These are tiny, about 2” or less to fit the small projects we will be making. Freehand Sewing with Sunny Carvalho | Create Arts Online
Also: I will have optional kits of batting and fabrics if you don’t want to source them elsewhere.Cotton quilt batting (just a small amount, we will work on pieces about 4” x 3”, bring a few)
Tiny pieces of cotton fabric. If you want to bring a small bag full, it’s fun to trade!
Embroidery Needles (sharp)
Embroidery Floss
Seed beads (My favorite size is 8/0. I don’t like dealing with beading needles. Make sure your needles will go through the beads) and any other beads you like.
Scissors (I like the Tim Holtz 7” for cutting fabric and a small embroidery scissors)
Optional: Beading mat (I found a tiny funnel beading tray at Hobby Lobby. It’s about 4” long and has a little beading mat inside. It fits easily in my travel sewing bag, I think it came with a larger one, as well. It’s in the isle with the beading tools)

I used to vacation with my family at the beach and have the most wonderful memories of those by gone days. One little bottle can hold past treasures in a quirky, but slightly blingy style. These little glass salt shaker bottles make the perfect vessel necklaces, filled with words and phrases, loaded with sand and glitter.
Learn how to flood non-lead solder and add quirky findings to the tops of these bottles. Add some heartfelt statements to the inside walls, fill with glitter dust, and create a special coating on the bottom that reminds one of dripping wax or the seal of a love letter.
To finish the piece, we will learn how to foil and SOLDER BUTTONS and create a special MISH-MOSH bead to incorporate into the chain of your final necklace. * Please wear hair back and wear long pants and bring reading glasses*
Materials Fee $40 paid at beginning of class includes:
the soldering iron set ups and solder, salt shakers glass bottles, bling and pewter pieces to solder to the tops, sand, glitter, wire, colorants, resin, and wax.

This lesser known Art movement started in Italy in the 1960's. Artists were rejecting traditional painting and using common items creating assemblage, sculpture and paintings with items like dirt, rocks, paper, clothing and rope. Their mission? To reconnect Art and Life.
I’m convinced this is where the recycled and repurposed art that we see so much of today began with this small group of artists.
In this class you'll get a little art history and then we'll make our own Arté Povera assemblage painting piece using acrylics, twig bundles, old postage stamps and Italian papers
Materials Fee $25 paid to instructor at beginning of class includes:
cradled wood panel, an Arte Povera class kit with various “poverty art” assemblage supplies- kits are unique and may include any combination of flattened bottle caps, items from nature, twigs, used postage stamps, birch tree skin, fabric, shredded money, quilling paper, string, leather and metal scrap, wine cork slices, Italian book pages, beads and more.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
Soft Gel Medium and a stronger adhesive- heavy gel or tacky glue
Favorite acrylics set and brushes, palette knife
Your favorite collage papers and any interesting items you have been squirreling away for a special project.
Water container
A second substrate- canvas, wood panel, wooden box lid or anything you already have in any size is fine

Or an image of dad as half a tree. Don’t worry the ideas come easily because you will be given a packet of mix and match collage images to use in your art. The fun is putting them together.
You will go home with 5” x 7” and 8" x10" completed works of art on canvas or boards.
You will be shown samples of what works. Demos on how to create paper, paint in the “paintover” style and, importantly, you will learn how to glue it all down for a professional look.
No painting experience needed!

EVERYTHING you will need to take this class: paints, brushes, markers, scissors, glue, etc.. However, if you want to use your own family images, you will need to send the images and words to be printed to Lisa, 1 week before class begins so that she has time to size and copy and bring them to class

There was a time when we drank from tea cups on special occasions or if visiting a tea room with friends. I have collected a few cups in my cupboard and occasionally use one to make myself a hot tea. Many more teacups are destined for the reuse centers or trash. They make interesting mosaic pieces. I have seen saucers and half cups stucco’d into walls with plaster.
For me, I adore the patterns that I find and think a few could make delicate, pretty charms. In this workshop, we are going to bring our pieces, whether sentimental or just fun, to make one of a kind charm bracelets. Everyone will learn basic soldering techniques onto porcelain, with no-lead solder. We will learn placement, foiling, corner creasing, soldering, and jump ring placement. We will learn how to use a special jig to allow soldering of more than one charm at a time. All the soldering tools will be available to share.
Everyone will complete a charm bracelet to include 8-10 porcelain pieces, some stained glass pieces, and varied buttons.
*For this workshop, we ask that you wear your hair back and wear long pants.
Materials Fee $45 paid at beginning of class includes:
use of a glass grinder, snips, soldering set ups and solder, bracelet chains, jump rings, stained glass assortment and buttons to solder.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
1. beads or pearls so we can make a few dangles.
2. Broken porcelain pieces the size of the charms you would like. You can file sharp edges or we can do in class. Wear eye protection when breaking porcelain
3. buttons.
4. cloth tape measure to use for determining wrist size.
5. dirty or beat up small pliers to use during the actual solder process. You will need it to manipulate your pieces during the process. Flux will ruin the metal of new pliers.
6. Old toothbrush.
7. rubbing alcohol, found at Walmart or drug store.
8. Sharpie Brand marker, any size tip, and a pencil
9. Small paper cutting scissors.
10. solder fume mask, found online or at a hardware store, if you have lung conditions, or are sensitive to scents or smells. I will bring the 3M Particulate Respirator 8577 and will sell them at 5.00 a piece. (The decision to where a mask while soldering is up to you.) There will be a couple table top carbon fume extractor fans for the room for circulation.
11. Two nice jewelry pliers and one round nose pliers, to open and close jump rings for attaching charms to the bracelet and making dangles
*Please do not bring other glass or charm memorabilia to foil, so that the workshop can proceed with time allotted. Your creativity comes with the porcelain pieces you choose to bring.

There is something about metal that just sticks in the mind of the Black Sheep Artist. Whether it was the heavy metal music that got into my blood during the 1980's, the exciting sword and sorcery movies I love to watch, or just the intriguing juxtaposition of strength and malleability of actual metal, I am drawn to this material in ways I don't fully understand. So, I decided to combine my love of metal with my love of books, and this fantastic, all-metal journal project is an magical experience in alchemy!
Students will fabricate, from scratch, a double-wide (6" x 8" x 2") newly improved version of my original all-metal, no-sew binding. The copper covers of this book, an amazing canvas for your interpretation, are completely fabricated by the students, Instruction is given in the alteration of metal with chemical patinas, paints, and fire to discover unexpectedly brilliant colors and often astonishing abstract patterns.
Adding some chain and a few beads or charms to dangle from the spine, and a cool found object, tintype, photo under glass, or some other wild idea attached the cover will make this book uniquely your own. Techniques taught will include, but are not limited to cutting, bending, sanding, engraving, torching, and, of course, the magical alteration of metal with various patinas and a propane torch. My original binding, once mastered, can be adapted to make books in many different sizes and using other materials.

This is a great new course that I have been developing over the past year. I may be known for transfers from my first book Image Transfer Workshop, but I am now experimenting with papers and other materials to get instant transparent collage elements to add to your paintings. I will bring four different papers for us to work on and we will explore various mark-making techniques on these papers. You can even trace over a part of an image, do texture rubbing, draw using a variety of tools and even found objects. You will discover indirect mark making, stamping and spraying with stencils. These papers will be added to abstract backgrounds that you have painted onto Ampersand panels.
The layering possibilities are amazing and by incorporating both transparency and adding opacity with paints, you will develop a very sophisticated mixed media artwork. I will bring some special paints and pens to add to the finished artwork. You will learn layering using color and composition techniques as well.
Instructor provides art materials to share including use of texture plates, stamps, stencils, specialty sprays, graphite pencil, texture tools and heat gun. I will bring oil pastels, inks and some paints but you may wish to have some of your own as well.
You may wish to bring a painting to start to work on top of, but we will have panels to paint on as well.
Materials Fee $25 paid at beginning of class includes:
Two Ampersand panels,
Mixed Media paper,
4 different types of translucent paper
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
Assortment of fluid acrylic paint and/or acrylic inks. A few of your favorite colors plus black and white.
Brushes from small to up to 2 inches

Optional-oil pastels, paint markers, pens, pencils or other mark making tools. A picture you may want to trace over as well.
A container for water large enough to hold your brushes.
Palette paper or plastic plates for mixing paints or inks.
Paper towels
Spray bottle for alcohol and one spray bottle for water.
Scissors

Painting on top of metal leaf gives your acrylic paintings an amazing glow. You will learn the ins and outs of applying metal leaf over both smooth and textured surfaces. You will also learn a quick way to get a similar effect on almost any surface. When you use transparent paints and glazes on top of the metal, your colors pop. Experiment with both transparent and opaque paints to create wonderful contrasts. You will work on 2 pieces, one on panel and the other paper. Painting with acrylic on top of the gold leaf will teach you about opacity and what I call optical color mixing. I will bring some unusual materials to create metallic texture, along with metal tape. Learn how to apply leaf over textured paper and then use it as collage. All that glows will also teach you how to work with those mysterious and tricky interference and iridescent paints. This new understanding of mixing metallic paints with colors will greatly expand your palette. You'll also learn how to create texture and then use metallic paints to create beautiful blue and green patina effects. This is a class for the adventurous and I will be there guiding you but allowing you to create in tune with your own vision.

Encaustic painting (painting using hot beeswax wax and mixed with a little resin for durability) is an ancient medium that not only looks luminous and dreamy, but it smells nice too.
One easy way to add color is to use Pan Pastels. Pan Pastels are a cake type of pastel that you apply using an applicator. It feels so light and airy you would think you are working with dust from butterfly wings. It becomes rich as you build up color then fuse with the heat of a flambé torch. Working in hot wax allows for fast assembly of many mixed-media compositions. The warmed wax is applied by brush then set by heat gun or flambe torch. Once it has cooled, the piece has a durable finish. You may add layers on top of the finish, dig into it, or embed things. In fact, there are an amazing number of ways to work in this medium.
Materials Fee $75 paid at beginning of class includes:
everything you need for this workshop!
For example, wood panels in various sizes, hog bristle brushes, materials to embed, papers to add, inks, oil sticks, scrappers, brushes, pan pastels and applicators, etc.
Many people decide to set up their own encaustic workshops at home after taking this class.

This class will allow experienced artists to see with new eyes and newbies will jump right in without intimidation. Does it sound easy? Well, sometimes the simple things are the most challenging. Doodling and scribbling release your mind from anxiety and control. You have no attachment; you are free to explore and play. Your composition will be like a roadmap that you will follow, filling in with color, adding and subtracting, making marks, editing, covering up and responding to the process. You will gain valuable lessons in composition, structure, shapes, color values and which colors make winning combinations. Follow the abstract line to find the subject inside the puzzle. You will also learn valuable color lessons such as how placing a saturated color next to a muted color increases the impact. Then you will take these pieces a step further and incorporate them into a new format. Long narrow pieces, cut them up and make a new piece or even enhancing an older piece. The possibilities are unlimited. Come explore, play and learn.
