  More than quilting but not quite thread painting, thread sketching is a relaxed approach to machine stitching much like an artist’s thumbnail study. The sketching is easier than you might think being based on a printed design that will guide your machine work. There will be several sketching style designs to choose from printed on stabilizer. A kit will be available. Skill level:
  Confident semi-beginners (with a familiarity with free motion stitching) and up.

  an 8 ½” x 11” sheet of pre-printed stabilizer, several neutral colors of thread, the base fabric, and topstitching needles

  This workshop is designed to give you a hands-on and in-depth look into intuitive painting and abstract expressionism in the form of abstract landscapes. It's for anyone wanting access to more freedom, authenticity, and courage in their painting practice.
  In the name of freedom and play, we'll be working on watercolor paper and canvas board with a variety of mixed media materials such as acrylic paint, paint pens, colored pencils, oil pastels, micron pens, etc. 
  I will share abstract painting techniques and lay out steps to create richly layered landscape paintings. I’ll share abstract basics, including setting up a creative work space, palette options, substrate suggestions, etc. I’ll walk you through my process for building texture and depth. Using a variety of tools, mediums, and palettes, we will create intuitive and planned compositions through several guided exercises. 
  This isn’t a paint by numbers class. Those serve their purpose, but I don’t want you to paint like me or everyone else. Here you’ll tell your own story and explore your unique style.
  Open to all levels. Seasoned painters and first-time painters are wholeheartedly encouraged to join. If you're a beginner who has never painted or an experienced painter feeling creatively stuck and in need of a boost of fresh inspiration, this course is for you!

  Create luminous stained-glass-like tissue paper with acrylic paints, then learn how to make the most of the beautiful material you have created with collage techniques. This workshop is open to beginners, but also appropriate for more experienced artists. Some knowledge of acrylic paints is helpful.

  Batik is process of using watercolor and wax on Ginwashi rice paper. The transparency of the paper adds to the transparent watercolors adding an additional source of light. The process is time consuming but not difficult. All levels of painters will complete a successful painting. A line drawing is used so no drawing is required. Once you learn the batik process you will be able to adapt this process to your own designs. You will learn a trick which will make the batik process much less frustrating. Your choice of instructional packets for a variety of subjects will be available ranging from simple card fronts to a more sophisticated painting.

  Materials Fee $25 cash paid at beginning of class includes:

  • Ginwashi Rice Paper
  • Mijello Mission Gold brand watercolors including Permanent Yellow Light, Indian Yellow, Permanent Magenta, Permanent Red, Cobalt Cerulean, Ultramarine Blue, Leaf Green, Olive Green, Permanent Violet
  • Wax and supplies used in the batik process
  • Freezer paper (necessary to paint on a white surface) and wax paper

  • Your usual painting supplies which should include a water container, paper towels, a fine mist spray bottle for water.
  • A permanent black pen like an Micron pen or Sakura Identi-Pen
  • Brushes: You may use your regular watercolor brushes. I prefer white nylon, less expensive brushes.
  • A box of pop-up tissues is necessary (like an inexpensive brand of Kleenex)
  • Bring at least 40 sheets of newspapers to use in ironing out the wax. Do not bring the shiny ads.

  For creatives of all types, sketchbooks provide practice for quickly expressing your ideas and exploring and recording your creative journey.  Keeping a sketchbook helps you to build the habit of putting pen to paper. Think of the act of recording ideas in your sketchbook as planting creative seeds!

  We’ll start our day making our own unique decorated cover papers for our book.
  In the afternoon we’ll make our accordion (concertina) folded books. This Concertina fold allows the sketchbook to be extended into a single sheet of paper almost 4 feet long. This flexible and extremely versatile format allows for personal modification of substrate size from using 4” x 6” individual sheets to working across multiple folds for panoramas and/or landscapes. With 12 continuous sheets (24 sides), these unique sketchbooks will be made from Strathmore 400 Series Watercolor Paper with a cold press watercolor surface. This paper is acid free. We will make hard covers for our sketchbook using our own decorated covers. A ribbon closure will complete our book.

  Have you been wanting to dabble in sculpting or just wanting to experiment with clay? This is the perfect class to get you started in the wonderful world of clay! I will guide you every step of the way. Even if you are a seasoned clay artist, this is a great class with lots of fun and easy techniques to give you that kick-start you need to apply to many other projects.
  You will leave your owls with me. Once they are dry, I will bisque-fire your owls and then personally glaze them for you using an oxide with a white glaze, similar to the 3 owls shown in the photos.

  I will transport the barn owls to my home studio in Vancouver, WA. I will bisque-fire them, add an oxide and a white glaze and glaze fire them. This will consist of 2 firings.
  The Barn owls will need to dry completely before they go into the kiln.

  In this 2 day workshop we will be creating a luscious deck of 30 plaster & 6 metal cards, each 4 1/2 x 3 1/2", that will live in a small metal box that will be embellished with transfers and plaster.

  I will teach you multiple techniques used to transfer images onto plaster, gesso and metal, and will then guide you into taking each transfer to a finished work of art.

  You can explore a theme or subject matter with this project, use this as a shrine to someone or place that is close to your heart, or allow yourself the freedom to learn the different techniques and experiment.

  This is a fun, loose, lighthearted workshop with lots of time to play and experiment with different products and techniques.

  I welcome those with all levels of experience, I hope that you can join us!

  Doll Making Workshop

  From a very early age, my head has been populated by "monsters". From Sesame Street and the Muppets to H.R. Pufnstuff, not to mention a steady diet of campy creature features from the early days of sci-fi and horror cinema. These characters ended up being much-beloved companions for myself, and many other "latch-key kids" raised by television.

  So, to pay tribute the monsters in my closet and under my bed, I have developed a comprehensive doll-making workshop that attempts to re-imagine those lovable and loud, wild and weird monsters of my youth.

  Also... as away to reach out to the next generation of artists, if this workshop is one that might appeal to a young person in your life, please bring them with you to class... for free! Yes, that's right, one child under 18 yrs, may attend this workshop with one paid adult attendee, free of charge. I'll even provide their kit! While I will endeavor to empower and encourage you to sculpt your doll into a "monstrous" form, the techniques and skills acquired and developed in this course can ultimately be applied to any style of doll making!

  What... not everyone loves monsters?

  On day 1, students will learn how to fabricate a one-wire doll armature that can be articulately posed and sculpted upon with many different materials. After that, I will show you how to craft a virtually indestructible figural base substrate.

  On day 2, students will get insanely useful tips and tricks for cutting patterns for optimal base form coverage, painting techniques to make things look less "painted", and tricks for employing other found objects and materials to create durable, poseable, unusual, fascinating, (scary?), but entertaining dolls.

  I am hoping to see lots of different outcomes from students in this workshop, as there is a ton of room for the unique and individualized interpretation of this project.

  Creating a body of work
  A mixed media workshop

  In this workshop we’ll take on the fear of using black as a background color, as a starting point, as the star, or as an honorable color among all the others on our palette. In physics and on the light spectrum black is the absence of light, which provides us with a beautiful opportunity to draw the light out with our paints, line makers, and collections of papers. In our lively event we’ll be using small canvases, panels, old vintage book boards, etc. to create a series of magnificent pieces. This mixed media workshop welcomes all curious souls and free spirits who are good and ready to celebrate a less popular color, in fact, one that in art is considered to be the presence of all colors.
   

  Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

  10 small surfaces (at least) you can’t wait to work on.
  Ideas: Small canvases of your choice, card boards, wood panels, old vintage book boards, etc.

  -A sidekick - a used/vintage book with images/photographs/illustrations you love, to be altered. (Book should lay flat when worked on and preferably not glossy)

  This is an open level class as there is plenty to be learned by someone who has never painted before or those who are full time artists and teachers. A mix of demonstration, lecture and hands on painting will introduce students to my ideas, techniques and the concepts that motivate my work.

  In this mixed-media painting class you will learn to create paintings that emerge from an abstract base of markings, colors, line, and shape to form expressive and organic creations. Students will learn painting and mark making techniques that will encourage imagery and connection to their work. Through a series of painting exercises, you will explore and express your ideas by imagining what could be created from abstraction rather than confining your ideas to predetermined outcomes. Within the process we will create narrative dialogue by noting what we see and feel in our work . Through the practice of subtractive painting we will remove the parts that are no longer relevant or keep us trapped from progress. This teaches us choice and freedom to change direction in our work. We continually build layers within our paintings combining fragments of passed ideas with the new until we arrive at a feeling of completion . Through this engagement we learn to experiment, take risks, re associate our work from perspectives unconfined by our expectations. This allows us to see things clearly and move to a more expressed and personal engagement when painting. Using simple materials and techniques you will be free to express yourself within your paintings in new ways. finding yourself as a painter from the raw base of art, learning your personal likes dislikes. Connecting you to your practice and imagery from a position of experimentation and instinct. Teaching you to imagine the unimaginable.

  For me painting is an experience in every way, i love the feeling of each
  of my mediums and methods, drawing clenched fisted, wrong handed, without
  looking, using my hand and palms to smear and mix acrylic paints, using
  brushes, scrapers, oil crayons, and pastels in any way that comes to mind.
  I'm always looking for a new technique to inspire me.. painting in many
  reckless layers searching for a meaning in random intentions, then pulling
  out the images i begin to see. This is what I will aim to instill in all
  of you.. the excitement of the unexpected.. creating in ways that don't
  seem logical. This is a key step towards understanding intuition

  This is an easy and fun workshop. Each guest will receive (qty 3) pre-prepped crackle paste panel with bird templates to transfer. I will demonstrate how to prepare the GOLDEN crackle paste on an Ampersand panel even though you won't have to do that part. We will use GOLDEN High Flow acrylics to add layers of washes similar to watercolor and then saturate certain modules to create a mosaic stained glass effect. All materials will be provided. We will be using SilverBrush Silverwhite brushes. This is a very success oriented workshop that doesn't require a lot of effort or thinking. You must pre-register at least 24 hours or more before the class or materials will not be ready for you. Everyone will leave with 3 completed 5 x 7 artworks of different birds. You can choose from several bird templates that will be provided. No previous experience or drawing experience required. You will trace the template on the pre-prepped panel..

  Stumpwork is a form of three dimensional hand embroidery that rose to popularity in 17th Century Europe. Used to decorate jewel boxes, framed art and other novelties, stumpwork usually feature pastoral vignettes of animals and plant life rendered in stitches that create texture and sculptural form. The subject for this project is the ‘flower of the sea’ - the Sea Anemone. Not actually flowers but animals, sea anemones are related to corals but resemble flowers and come in astounding colors. In their ‘open’ active state they do look like flowers with tentacles radiating from a center; when disturbed the anemone draws in its tentacles and resembles a rounded pillow, both forms are included in the project. In this class, students will make a small sampling of embroidered and beaded sea anemones, The tactile feel of these beaded and embroidered creatures has to be felt in person to appreciate – you can’t resist running your fingers over the exquisite texture. This is a handwork project; no sewing machine is needed for this class.

  Skill Level: confident beginner and up (some hand embroidery experience is helpful but not necessary).

  In the spirit of Pacita Abad we will combine fabric paint and stitching to create a colorful and original piece of wearable art. This is a fun and creative project that is suitable for students with any level of experience. We will use fabric paint ensuring that the fabric remains soft. We will then embellish the shirt with buttons, ribbons and simple embroidery stitches. Don’t like to sew? You can use a pen to make stitches.

  • Brushes: I prefer flat or angle white nylon brushes sizes ¾” or 1” and a liner brush. You may use the same brushes used for acrylics.

  Acrylic inks have the vibrancy of acrylic pigment and yet the loose and wild free-flowing style of watercolor.   Have you been wanting to dabble in sculpting or just wanting to experiment with clay? This is the perfect class to get you started in the wonderful world of clay! I will guide you every step of the way. Even if you are a seasoned clay artist, this is a great class with lots of fun and easy techniques to give you that kick-start you need to apply to many other projects.
   

  You will leave your rattle with me. Once they are dry, I will bisque-fire your piece and then personally glaze it for you using an oxide with a white glaze, similar to the seed pod shown in the photos.

  
  This class is for you if:

  The book as an artform offers the opportunity to take your painting or collage into the sculptural and narrative realms. You can create books that read in sequential pages, books that are ‘read’ all at once, or books that reveal hidden secrets in their folds and pockets. Paint, collage, fold, draw, print, and stitch your stories into accessible but artful book sculptures. There will be no blank books in this workshop! Create the images and book structure together into a story/object/visual feast.

  This is not a Visual Journal class. A journal of any type suggests that you add content on a daily, or irregular, basis. Sketchbooks, for example, are journals. These visual books are objects of artistic expression in themselves.

  You will paint both watercolor paintings which are 7” x 15” each. Similar techniques and process will be used to create these flowers with the background uniting them. The step-by step-instruction allows beginner and experienced painters to complete successful paintings. Each time I paint these flowers they turn out a little different and that is a good thing. Yours will be your own unique piece of art. I expect most paintings to be about 90% completed in class.

  In the name of freedom and play, let's paint abstract faces!
  I invite you to spend the day with me letting loose, slinging paint, and having fun. You'll be gently guided and supported every step of the way.
  When I first started painting, faces and figures were the subject matter that scared me the most. However, with a lot of practice and some key lessons learned, they now come easily. In fact, it's what I paint most often in my art journal for comfort.
  If painting faces seems scary to you, I want to demonstrate how to simplify the process. I will provide lessons to get you started and help subside those fears. I'll encourage you to paint perfectly imperfect abstract faces.
  Faces tell stories like no other subject and I'll invite you to infuse your faces with your own stories. We'll start with intention setting and art journal prompts followed by several guided painting excercises using a vareity of tools, mediums, and palettes. Included are tips for setting up your painting station, mark making, color and composition, techniques for building layers, and so much more.

  This is a great new course that I have been developing over the past year. I may be known for transfers from my first book Image Transfer Workshop, but I am now experimenting with papers and other materials to get instant transparent collage elements to add to your paintings. I will bring four different papers for us to work on and we will explore various mark-making techniques on these papers. You can even trace over a part of an image, do texture rubbing, draw using a variety of tools and even found objects. You will discover indirect mark making, stamping and spraying with stencils. These papers will be added to abstract backgrounds that you have painted onto Ampersand panels.

  The layering possibilities are amazing and by incorporating both transparency and adding opacity with paints, you will develop a very sophisticated mixed media artwork. I will bring some special paints and pens to add to the finished artwork. You will learn layering using color and composition techniques as well.

  Instructor provides art materials to share including use of texture plates, stamps, stencils, specialty sprays, graphite pencil, texture tools and heat gun. I will bring oil pastels, inks and some paints but you may wish to have some of your own as well.
  You may wish to bring a painting to start to work on top of, but we will have panels to paint on as well.

  In contemporary times, fabric layered and stitched in parallel lines of rough running stitches is called Kantha but true Kantha is far more exquisite. In classical Kantha, intricate tapestries featuring various flora and fauna were stitched, usually with a simple running stitch that was often laid to create secondary textures and patterns. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of classical Kantha stitching on a leaf motif. Once you learn the technique, you can tackle more intricate motifs. The instructor will have some collectors books on traditional Indian Kantha for you to peruse.

  • Thimble (optional): Some stitchers prefer using a thimble to protect tender fingers, I never use one but if you do, bring one you are comfortable wearing.
  • Portable light and/or magnifier (optional): The lighting varies in each classroom and having a better light source and magnification can be helpful for handwork.

  There is something about metal that just sticks in the mind of the Black Sheep Artist. Whether it was the heavy metal music that got into my blood during the 1980's, the exciting sword and sorcery movies I love to watch, or just the intriguing juxtaposition of strength and malleability of actual metal, I am drawn to this material in ways I don't fully understand. So, I decided to combine my love of metal with my love of books, and this fantastic, all-metal journal project is an magical experience in alchemy!

  Students will fabricate, from scratch, a double-wide (6" x 8" x 2") newly improved version of my original all-metal, no-sew binding. The copper covers of this book, an amazing canvas for your interpretation, are completely fabricated by the students, Instruction is given in the alteration of metal with chemical patinas, paints, and fire to discover unexpectedly brilliant colors and often astonishing abstract patterns.

  Adding some chain and a few beads or charms to dangle from the spine, and a cool found object, tintype, photo under glass, or some other wild idea attached the cover will make this book uniquely your own. Techniques taught will include, but are not limited to cutting, bending, sanding, engraving, torching, and, of course, the magical alteration of metal with various patinas and a propane torch. My original binding, once mastered, can be adapted to make books in many different sizes and using other materials.

  Painting on top of metal leaf gives your acrylic paintings an amazing glow. You will learn the ins and outs of applying metal leaf over both smooth and textured surfaces. You will also learn a quick way to get a similar effect on almost any surface. When you use transparent paints and glazes on top of the metal, your colors pop. Experiment with both transparent and opaque paints to create wonderful contrasts. You will work on 2 pieces, one on panel and the other paper. Painting with acrylic on top of the gold leaf will teach you about opacity and what I call optical color mixing. I will bring some unusual materials to create metallic texture, along with metal tape. Learn how to apply leaf over textured paper and then use it as collage. All that glows will also teach you how to work with those mysterious and tricky interference and iridescent paints. This new understanding of mixing metallic paints with colors will greatly expand your palette. You'll also learn how to create texture and then use metallic paints to create beautiful blue and green patina effects. This is a class for the adventurous and I will be there guiding you but allowing you to create in tune with your own vision.

In this workshop, we’ll dive headfirst into the exhilarating realm of busy abstract art, where more is always more and composition confusion stops you no more!
  Our adventure begins with embracing the beauty of complexity, layering colors, dynamic shapes, and combining it all in controlled energy. From swiping paint with carefree abandon to adding defined little marks for interest, you’ll discover the joy of filling your canvas to the brim with artistic chaos without wondering if you’re doing too much or worrying about having a focal point.
  The focus will be on creating with freedom and balancing busyness with harmony. We'll explore the interplay of textures, contrasting hues, and the rhythm of overlapping forms and marks to create a small collection of exciting pieces for your walls. So, gather your brushes and your bravest ideas, and join us for a creative escapade where more is always a merry delight!

  Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

  10-20 pieces of collage material for personal use. These can be magazine pages, laser or toner photocopies, scraps of fabric, salvaged 2 dimensional elements. I recommend you bring a variety of sizes that somewhat correspond to the sizes of the substrates you bring.
  10 additional pieces of collage material to trade with classmates. Just stuff them in a gallon ziplock baggie or envelope and we’ll divy them up in the class.
  3-7 Substrates of your choice such as canvas boards, wood panels, artist boards, scraps of masonite, craft panels, etc. in sizes that you’re comfortable traveling with (no larger than 11x14). I recommend sizes such as 5x7, 8x10, etc. Having a few to work on will give you more freedom to experiment during the workshop. Unstretched, pre-primed canvas from an art supply store will work well too.
  A few of your favorite colors of acrylic paint, including a white that you like.
  A small container of your favorite collage glue. I like Liquitex Soft gel matte medium.
  A few of your favorite art brushes including one that is 1-2” wide.
  A fine point paint pen in black and/or white
  A #2 pencil
  Basic art supplies such as scissors, a rag or wet wipes, apron, etc. Whatever you like to have on hand when you create.

  OPTIONAL:
  Heat tool/crafter’s heat gun. I will have a couple on hand but if you have your own to dry your paint faster you won’t have to wait in line to use mine.

  Do good things really come in small packages? Well, this tiny little glass and copper journal is absolutely jam-packed with charisma and charm and will surely become a cherished treasure once you fill it with your photos, writing, or art.

  Students will fabricate "from scratch" a tiny little 4" x 3" glass and copper journal. I just love the way the vintage photo transparencies look against the metal, but the images on the front and back covers are entirely up to you, just bring 4 transparency images 2"x3". I will even give you several other design choices as you construct this tiny version of my original all-metal, no-sew binding. We'll attach the copper and baroque swirled glass covers with delightfully rusted hardware. Just a few of the things you will be learning are: glass cutting, alteration of metal with torch and patina, hardware applications, hand tools, shop safety, metal fabrication, wire wrapping, basic book binding, and lots of other cool tips and tricks for a mixed media artist!

  Viking knit is such a versatile skill to add to your jewelry book! It can be a very open weave that can hold beads, a very tight fine weave for special pendants, a thick tight weave for very masculine bracelets. It can even be done with leather for a great look!
  Adding handmade silver beads to this weave just takes it away above the standard! You will learn to cut the correct size disc and hole for your weave, doming the bead and soldering it together (if you are not familiar with soldering, register for my soldering class to make you so confident in this skill!)
  And finally, you will learn how to finish the bracelet with a proper endcap and clasp or toggle.

Doodling and scribbling release your mind from anxiety and control. You have no attachment; you are free to explore and play. Your composition will be like a roadmap that you will follow, filling in with color, adding and subtracting, making marks, editing, covering up and responding to the process. You will gain valuable lessons in composition, structure, shapes, color values and which colors make winning combinations. Follow the abstract line to find the subject inside the puzzle. You will also learn valuable color lessons such as how placing a saturated color next to a muted color increases the impact. Then you will take these pieces a step further and incorporate them into a new format. Long narrow pieces, cut them up and make a new piece or even enhancing an older piece. The possibilities are unlimited. Come explore, play and learn.

  In this workshop, we’ll focus on the process of creating abstract art that captures the essence of nature’s beauty with hints and details of botanical form, within the context of abstract composition. Leaves, flowers, stones, and even the animal kingdom will serve as your muse as we create works of art that honor those bits of inspiration in a more nuanced and subtle way rather than usual.
  As we delve deeper into composition in a way that gives your more freedom and fewer rules to follow, you’ll discover the art of balancing chaos and harmony to create a pleasing abstract that can be as soft and gentle or bold and intense as you want. Once your color and nature elements are committed to the canvas, you’ll have the option of encasing it all under a luminous layer of encaustic medium if you choose. By the end of our workshop, you’ll leave with a small collection of beautiful art pieces that capture the spirit of nature in its most magical form.

  What exactly IS a shaman? Well, basically, a shaman is an individual who has access to, and influence in, the world of benevolent (and sometimes, malevolent) spirits. They are the world's mystics who travel through altered states of consciousness in order to perceive and interact with the world beyond the physical and act as a channel of transcendental energies into this one.

  In this workshop, students will attempt to capture some of the ephemeral essence of these magical beings in a relatively easy, but very well-built, and aesthetically evocative figural assemblage totem.

  While chatting and discussing the different shamanic traditions from around the world, students will cut, drill and fasten wooden components to fashion a rock-solid frame, build poseable limbs, and put a cool head from a doll, an animal skull, or some other headpiece that may have meaning in your sprit world on the top. After that, I will share with you, my process for approaching all figure-building, with the hopes that I can your "artist shaman" for the day, and teach you how to use the power of the shaman to open new creative doors of endless possibility. To wrap up, we'll accessorize our shamans with some found objects, chains, charms, and/or strings of cool beads and cool stuff! Lots of room for individual expression upon the basic form here, and there are plenty of techniques to expand your skill set, as well as some new ways of thinking about how composition and construction work together in a piece of art.

  Join us as we explore the fascinating realm of freeform knitting. We will discuss some of the many ways to freeform knit, such as knitting fragments and joining them together (known as Scrumbles), adding to an existing piece using a variety of stitches, yarns, and needle sizes, joining various yarns together and knitting intuitively, or adding surface embellishments such as beads, crochet pieces, felted pieces, or embroidery.
    Students must have a basic knowledge of knitting. We will work on a small rectangle to get familiar with freeform knitting. From there you can decide to make a small handbag, wall hanging, or a piece of wearable art.

  Welcome, dream-weavers and storytellers, to this playful workshop where the magic of encaustic medium meets memory-sparking photographs! Picture this: a realm where waxy whispers blend with captured memories, where your snapshots transform into ethereal art pieces. In this workshop, we’ll simplify the art of encaustic work to combine layers of molten wax and your favorite images to create mesmerizing dreamscapes.
  We’ll start our art pieces with our favorite photographs - vintage or current, crisp or faded, full or partial - which will be added to layers of paint, simple collage, and a soft translucent veil of wax, their details glowing with an otherworldly charm. We’ll explore layering the images under wax but also fine tuning the magical technique of image wax transfers on top of the wax.
  Whether it's transforming a simple snapshot into a hazy memory of a forgotten dream or crafting a fantastical narrative with multiple images, you’ll learn to infuse your artwork with a touch of magic with the most simple and personal materials. By the end of our beeswax scented workshop, you’ll leave with a collection of ethereal art pieces, each one a new story written with treasured images and the timeless, mystical medium of encaustic.

  Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

  5-10 Images of nature. These can be magazine pages, laser or toner copies, or vintage found images. If you bring photocopies, basic copy paper is fine and is preferred over a thick cardstock or heavier paper. I recommend you bring a variety of sizes that somewhat correspond to the sizes of the substrates you bring.
  3-7 Substrates of your choice such as canvas boards, wood panels, artist boards, scraps of masonite, craft panels, etc. in sizes that you’re comfortable traveling with (no larger than 11x14). I recommend sizes such as 5x7, 8x10, etc. Having a few to work on will give you more freedom to experiment during the workshop.
  A few of your favorite colors of acrylic paint, including a white that you like. Be sure to have a couple of lighter colors as well so that the white space in your images will be visible.
  A small container of your favorite collage glue. I like Liquitex Soft gel matte medium.
  A few of your favorite art brushes including one that is 1-2” wide.
  A small collection of collage papers. These can be small pieces and just a few stuffed in an envelope to pull from if you want will be ine. These are different from the nature-themed images you will bring and I recommend that for the collage papers you focus on patterns and color and not so much defined images.

  In this class you will create a personal, one-of-a-kind, fabric collage. I will guide you step by step through the process of fine tuning your composition and selecting your color palette. Next you will select a range of fabrics that express your personal vision. I will offer you as little or as much guidance as you want as you move through this process. Once you have assembled your fabrics you will prepare them for collaging by applying a thin layer of iron on adhesive to the wrong side of the fabric. This readies them for layering using a raw edge applique technique. Now the real fun begins! You get to play with scissors, no running of course! Cutting shapes from your fabric you can be wildly intuitive, for a loose expressionistic effect or you can be precise, relying more heavily on patterned cuts for a more detailed and realistic look. When I first began exploring fabric collage and applique, I had many frustrating experiences cutting fabric with the wrong side of the fabric facing up. I kept cutting the design in reverse. Aargh! Finally, I developed a method of creating my own pattern pieces that virtually eliminates this problem. It is quick, easy, and almost foolproof. Once you learn my system, you’ll never worry about cutting a design in reverse again. As you continue to add layers of fabric you are free to play. You can arrange shapes, rearrange shapes, and move them around again until your inner critic finally goes “Yes! I’ve nailed it”. My goal is for you will leave class with a finished collage. You can leave it as is or add an additional layer of detail and texture with free motion sketch stitching or add additional color with acrylics. Either way, you will have an original work of fabric art that can be mounted to hang on the wall, turned into a pillow, or incorporated into any sewing project

  Many people have tried Gel Plate Printing and make stacks of collage papers with it. In this class you will learn to make beautiful monotypes that are finished fine-art quality prints. You’ll learn how to apply bands of color and texture and develop some of your images . We’ll play with some transfer techniques and students will learn how to register colors on their prints.   In this class you will explore a fabric collage technique called confetti. This collage method employs chopped and shredded fabric to create a scene in a freestyle mosaic style, the subject matter will be a forest scene. Each student can choose their own color scheme – from spring and summer colors, to autumn or winter to create a unique restful forest glade. Or go for wild, surrealistic colors if that is your fancy. You might even turn your forest glade into a lush garden with the addition of a cottage, arbor, or garden wall if you choose. 

  Materials Fee $30 paid at beginning of class includes:

  Rectangle of background fabric with batting and backing, an assortment of fabrics to chop into confetti and tree trunks, fusible web (for tree trunks) and fusing powder (for confetti), zipper bags to store confetti, tulle, and thread.

  Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

  • Craft Scissors: With sharp blades to cut fine details. I prefer the Fiskars Easy Action 6” spring loaded scissors or the Karen Kay Buckley Perfect 6” scissors. These will be used on paper/adhesive backed fabric so bring a pair you don’t mind using for this.
  • Large fabric shears: The confetti is faster and easier to cut with large sewing shears. This will involve lots of cutting so a pair of 10” Fiskars Easy Action spring loaded shears makes the task easier but any heavy duty large sewing shears will do. Make sure they are sharp.
  • A medium sized rotary cutting mat or similarly sized panel of stiff cardboard.
  • Miscellaneous fine-tuning/arranging tools (optional): These can include tweezers, a bamboo skewer, and/or an old soft toothbrush or artist’s brush. These tools can help you move and reposition confetti and tree trunks around to tweak your composition.
  • Novelty prints (optional): If you have fabrics printed with medium/large sized cottages or cabins, wildlife like deer or bears, garden theme elements like a fountain, garden furniture or garden artifacts… I will have a few random novelty prints you can share, or you can leave out these details and stick to a peaceful forest glade.

  This class is open to all levels including those who have never painted before. this is a great class for anyone who has struggled with or would simply like to explore new and expressed ways of creating faces. using fun simple techniqes we will carve imagery into - ez carve printing blocks, and experiment with mono printing. allowing us to print the imagery in a variety of ways. its more about the way we print the image then the complexity of the carving. in most cases the simpiler the better. Once we have experimented with carving and printing we will be ready to work the pieces into expressed artifacts. reshaping, and reworking the imagery in ways that give it an aged and weathered look. we will use text and symbols to add meaning and question within the work.

  Using block printing as a base for creation will allow experimentation without the fear of mistakes. We will be able to repeat the imagery with ease by simply reprinting from our carvings. this repeated imagery will encourage us to experiment with new techniques like subtraction methods and compare the various printing and redefining methods against one another. the techniques are quick simple and imediate keeping things fun and moving forward.

  These techniques and concepts work perfectly in connection with any of my other painting methods. So if youve taken a class with me previously these techniques will act as new tools which you can incorporate with any other concepts you have learned.

  Mending techniques are used to repair and strengthen garments and other textile items. But, when left visible the repairs are also decorative and add texture, line, color, and can be quite charming! The techniques can also be used in paper and textile art pieces. In this workshop students will create a sampler of mending techniques seen in Japanese and French textiles. After learning the techniques we will move on to repairing, or embellishing a garment or other textile item of your choice. Each student will bring an item that needs repair, or embellishing, and will apply one or more of the mending techniques learned in the class.

  The instructor will bring items from her collection of mended textiles for inspiration. Students should bring a textile item that has a worn area that needs re-enforcing, a hole or tear that requires repair, a stain that needs covering, or an item that simply could use some stitcherly embellishment. This can be pants, a dress, a shirt or skirt, a table cloth, curtain, or other textile item.

  Remember the scene in The Sound of Music when the children perform a puppet show about the girl and goat herder? Didn’t it make you yearn to put on a puppet show of your very own? Well, even if it didn’t, you now have an opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind marionette of your own design. We will begin by sculpting a head with polymer clay, and then creating articulating limbs. Clothe your creation in simple-to-sew, colorful garments and then learn how to rig the puppet to the strings and bars. With a little practice, your marionette will be dancing on a stage. The techniques we will employ will be sculpting basic facial features, creating different textures using everyday objects, using paints and dyes to develop brilliant effects, hand-sewing simple garments, and rigging the puppet.

  I will show you how to construct the bag like the original. I will also show you how to sculpt a mini mask using paper clay. Other techniques to adorn the pouches will be demonstrated:

  The Green Man is an iconic figure that appears in a number of ancient cultures but is most often associated with Celtic lore and mythology. He is the male equivalent and consort of Mother Nature and is portrayed as a virile male whose flowing locks of head and facial hair are represented by leaves and botanical elements. Sometimes he bears antlers on his head and in some imagery birds may be nesting in his bounteous foliage. For this project, you will create your own Green Man or Woman, starting with a base facial image and embellishing it with botanical elements fussy cut from nature and botanical fabric prints. Ultimately, the fabric collage will need to be finished with stitching, but in class we will focus on composing and fusing the collage so a sewing machine will not be needed for this class.

  Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

  • Craft Scissors: With sharp blades to cut fine details. I prefer the Fiskars 6” Easy Action spring loaded scissors or the Karen Kay Buckley Perfect 6” scissors. These will be used on paper/adhesive backed fabric so bring a pair you don’t mind using for this.
  • Teflon Applique pressing sheet (Optional): These non-stick sheets protect an iron and board from stray adhesive and allow you to create fabric collage compositions prior to adhering them to the project.

  NOTE: The kit will include a basic generic ‘face’ template printed on light colored fabric on which you will build your collage. If you wish to make a custom face, you can print one on pre-treated fabric sheets designed to go through a computer printer. There are many brands available but the one called ‘Printed Treasures’ and the one marketed by June Tailor, give the best results. Some interesting alternatives students might bring are:
  • A photograph (head and shoulders) self portrait or portrait of a loved one or friend, perhaps even a beloved pet, printed on fabric (there are a variety of pre-treated fabrics designed to go through a computer printer but the one called ‘Printed Treasures’ and the one marketed by June Tailor, give the best results).
  • Likewise, you can crop and print a portrait from a famous painting onto fabric to collage over. Think of paintings like the Mona Lisa, an image of Frida Kahlo, one of the classical medieval icons of a saint, or one of Picasso’s cubist modern portraits… let your imagination soar.

  These printed images will be limited to an 8 ½” x 11” sheet as that is the size these commercially pre-treated fabrics come. An image that is printed full on, face forward will be easier to collage than one in profile or a face canted at an angle.

  Having just the right fabric to work with makes your fabric collage, quilt or sewing project so much more fun! But finding that perfect piece of fabric isn’t always easy. Earlier in my career, I dyed my fabric with fiber reactive dyes and I loved the process of seeing the dye move through the fabric and create rich saturated color. It was easy to create the perfect fabric. But fiber reactive dyes have a down side. They are easily airborne and toxic in nature. Today I work from a small studio in my home and both safety and space considerations rule out the use of dye. When looking for an alternative, I discovered acrylics designed to work specifically with fabric; acrylic inks, fluid, blocks and pencils. They are a wonderful substitute for dye. In this class you will be coloring cotton fabric using acrylics that are perfectly suited to the challenge. You will explore a variety of techniques to create both patterned, solid, and batik-like fabric. You will create fabric bundles in 2 analogous colorways of your choice and you will leave class with a variety of related fabrics in a cohesive palette ready for your next project.
