Journalography is a one-day class focused on using mixed media techniques to create art journal spreads. These pages are not about using text to express your thoughts and feelings but rather about unleashing your artist voice though visual expression. Working in your current or an all-new journal, we will start by using the Gel Plate to create backgrounds with depth that will serve as the perfect base to work over. We will then add paint, collage, stamps, stencils, and handmade marks to build our pages layer by layer. I will share my journal process which includes clustering, extending, integrating, contrasting, and more. Although the process will be the same for all participants, the end result will be unique to each of you as we work together to enable you to work more freely, tap into your artistic voice, and let your creativity spill on the page.
Instructor will provide:
Stencils and stamps to share (although feel free to bring in your own as well)

So you bought a Dremel Tool, with all those crazy attachments and bits, and the unbridled versatility of this amazing device has left you more than a little bit confused, or even intimidated. Fear not my friends, for this course will turn a Dremel Novice into a Dremel Master. I will explain all the basic workings of the tool, chucks, collets, and how to change the bits, and replace the brushes. We'll go over what many of the different tips and bits can do, such as drilling, cutting, buffing, sanding, grinding, polishing, carving, engraving, and a few of the specialty bits and attachments like tools that can drill and cut glass, porcelain or stone (diamond bit/cut-off wheel required). Students will not only get a demonstration of these tools and several of their myriad uses on all kinds of materials, but should bring along a variety of supplies to practice on, as there will plenty of quality hands-on time for you and your new tool. We will also cover using a Dremel drill press and basic safety for rotary tools.
For more info visit Black Sheep Artist Studio or email
thomasashmanart@ yahoo.com
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
A Dremel (or another roary tool) with all the bits, attachments, and gizmos you can bring; I will bring a small variety of supplies to work on like metal, wood, plastic, porcelain, stone and glass (requires a diamond bit or cut off wheel), but you should bring some too! Also, if you have a "project" in mind, bring it! You might also want to have on hand some snips or shears, a pair of needlenose pliers, wire cutters, scissors, ruler, and a Sharpie. Bring whatever materials you like to work on most so we can get you going on what you bought the Dremel for in the first place!

I started art journaling because of my mother. She was fairly certain I'd end up as a French mime or cat psychic - anything that let me avoid math and wear excessive eyeliner, and I didn't want to prove her wrong. Sometime, beginning in adolescence, I realized that a composition notebook and the will to make honest, messy, beautiful things was the answer to it all. This class is like that. You'll write things you didn't mean to write and draw faces you didn't mean to draw. We will cover prompts, techniques, and creative tools - including watercolor, collage, ink and graphite. Expect a blend of guided exercises, quiet work time, and inspiring group sharing.
Materials Fee $10 paid at beginning of class includes:
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
Art Journal - Whichever type you are comfortable with. If you choose a Composition notebook, you can always add in watercolor pages. If you choose a watercolor notebook, you can add in text pages. The substrate itself doesn't make a difference, just that you have one.
Graphite Pencil
Erasor
pencil sharpener
pens
White Prismacolor Pencil
Stencils - vary tiny patterns with large.
collage papers - print outs, gelli prints, ephemera, photos, you get the idea
watercolors
paint brush
Cosmetic Sponges
Optional Supplies
Colored Pencils
Charcoal
Spray Fixative
Text Stamps
Brayer
Any water-soluble paints - gouache, especially neon colors, are especially nice. As is Color Shift paints.

You have stories that pack a punch, friend. They deserve to be told for the challenge they were and for the conqueror that you are. Relief art is a beautiful way to bring texture, depth, into your artwork to honor those stories—and it’s a practice with ancient roots, found across cultures for thousands of years. Traditionally, relief art has been used to tell stories, depict historical events, or express symbolic meanings. In this workshop, we’ll explore how relief can range from subtle, shallow forms barely rising from the surface (low relief) to bold, deeply carved shapes that almost come alive (high relief). Using plaster and simple materials, we’ll create small, dimensional scenes that reflect meaningful moments and personal stories—ways of honoring our human experience through visual narrative, memory, and metaphor. We’ll pace ourselves comfortably with each step, from building up layers with varied depths to adding detail and paint. You don’t need any experience with sculpture or painting—just a willingness to explore. By the end of the day, you’ll have a few finished works and a handful of techniques you can carry into your own creative practice. Come ready to get your hands messy, your imagination stirred, and your stories celebrated.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
3-5 substrates to work on. These can be wood, masonite, canvas boards, art panels, corrugated cardboard or foam core in whatever size you want to work on. Anywhere from 5x7” to 8x10” will work great!
Plaster Gauze - 1 roll of 4” or wider plaster gauze (If you’re coming with a friend, you can both probably share one).
Scissors
A few artist brushes including a 1” wide soft, dense brush (ideally not a coarse chip brush).
Your favorite gel medium or glue (I like Liquitex Matte Gel but any glue that dries fairly quickly will work great.)
Acrylic paints in your favorite colors as well as an opaque white (I like Titanium White by Golden or Liquitex) and a black or other favorite dark neutral color.
OPTIONAL:
An apron because this class can get messy!
Chipboard or framing mat scraps to cut shapes from. Scrap cardboard like cereal or cracker box cardboard will work great too. Pre-cut chipboard elements like found here. IMPORTANT NOTE: Very fine detail in any pre-cut shapes will be greatly diminished in the process we will explore in this class so if you want to incorporate pre-cut shapes, I recommend looking for more general shapes with less tiny detail or be okay with some of that detail being obscured.
Other somewhat 3-dimensional found objects to incorporate.
Any other materials you love using to add details or personal marks to your work: paint pens, metal leaf, etc. NOT required but can be fun.

Come, step into the bold and expressive world of Baroque painting in this hands-on oil painting workshop that blends technique with art history. Designed for artists of all levels, this one-day class will immerse you in the dramatic use of light and shadow, dynamic composition, and expressive gesture that defined the Baroque era.

We’ll focus on value, light, and proportion while exploring how these elements can create drama and mirror the qualities found in the emotional narratives of masters like Caravaggio and Rubens.
Throughout the day, I’ll offer step-by-step guidance and demonstrations to help you develop both your technical skills and a deeper appreciation for the rich, evocative beauty of Baroque art.

An artist’s statement tells others about you and your work. Writing one is a powerful exercise for articulating your passion and art. But, it’s also a challenge to capture in words what is often so hard to express and intangible. No matter your medium or level of proficiency, a good statement is a useful tool to make you a better artist, gain confidence and open doors to showing your art.
In this workshop, you will be guided through a series of questions to gather information to create a sophisticated artist’s statement, and to deepen your thinking about your own art making.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
A favorite pen
A highlighter or two
Paper to write on: lined and unlined
A sample or image of your typical art or craft
Optional: copies of artist’s statements that appeal to you.
Optional: a list of other artists whose work you admire and is similar to yours. Print outs of their artist statements. Even better is to read their statements with a highlighter ahead of time with your favorite ideas well marked. You can just bring a mobile device to search but it’s better to have them printed and read in advance.
Optional: a list of any shows you’ve been in and the dates.
All other materials will be supplied.

Encaustic painting (painting using hot beeswax wax and mixed with a little resin for durability) is an ancient medium that not only looks luminous and dreamy, but it smells nice too.
One easy way to add color is to use Pan Pastels. Pan Pastels are a cake type of pastel that you apply using an applicator. It feels so light and airy you would think you are working with dust from butterfly wings. It becomes rich as you build up color then fuse with the heat of a flambé torch. Working in hot wax allows for fast assembly of many mixed-media compositions. The warmed wax is applied by brush then set by heat gun or flambe torch. Once it has cooled, the piece has a durable finish. You may add layers on top of the finish, dig into it, or embed things. In fact, there are an amazing number of ways to work in this medium.
Materials Fee $75 paid at beginning of class includes:
everything you need for this workshop!
For example, wood panels in various sizes, hog bristle brushes, materials to embed, papers to add, inks, oil sticks, scrappers, brushes, pan pastels and applicators, etc.

Well, even if it didn’t, you now have an opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind marionette of your own design. This is an open level class as there is plenty to be learned by someone who has never painted before or those who are full time artists and teachers. A mix of demonstration, lecture and hands on painting will introduce students to my ideas, techniques and the concepts that motivate my work.
In this mixed-media painting class you will learn to create paintings that emerge from an abstract base of markings, colors, line, and shape to form expressive and organic creations. Students will learn painting and mark making techniques that will encourage imagery and connection to their work. Through a series of painting exercises, you will explore and express your ideas by imagining what could be created from abstraction rather than confining your ideas to predetermined outcomes. Within the process we will create narrative dialogue by noting what we see and feel in our work . Through the practice of subtractive painting we will remove the parts that are no longer relevant or keep us trapped from progress. This teaches us choice and freedom to change direction in our work. We continually build layers within our paintings combining fragments of passed ideas with the new until we arrive at a feeling of completion . Through this engagement we learn to experiment, take risks, re associate our work from perspectives unconfined by our expectations. This allows us to see things clearly and move to a more expressed and personal engagement when painting. Using simple materials and techniques you will be free to express yourself within your paintings in new ways. finding yourself as a painter from the raw base of art, learning your personal likes dislikes. Connecting you to your practice and imagery from a position of experimentation and instinct. Teaching you to imagine the unimaginable.
For me painting is an experience in every way, i love the feeling of each
of my mediums and methods, drawing clenched fisted, wrong handed, without
looking, using my hand and palms to smear and mix acrylic paints, using
brushes, scrapers, oil crayons, and pastels in any way that comes to mind.
I'm always looking for a new technique to inspire me.. painting in many
reckless layers searching for a meaning in random intentions, then pulling
out the images i begin to see. This is what I will aim to instill in all
of you.. the excitement of the unexpected.. creating in ways that don't
seem logical. This is a key step towards understanding intuition
If you would like to learn more about my teaching style and my background you can check out the videos below

Join me in bringing the rich cultural traditions of Mexico's Day of the Dead to life through this fun creative experience. Let your imagination run as you breathe new life into a discarded doll, imbuing it with the festive, intricate aesthetic of this beloved holiday. Whether you're an experienced crafter or a beginner, you'll leave with a one-of-a-kind keepsake that captures the whimsical, macabre beauty of Día de los Muertos. This workshop is a unique, hands-on way to explore Mexican heritage and culture, so add some spice to your creativity, honor the dearly departed, and create a stunning, if kinda spooky, art doll that will be the centerpiece of your Day of the Dead celebrations for years to come.
In this course, students will transform a found thrift store doll into a stunning, darkly themed work of art as they "re-dress" their doll in a customized costume, paint its face with traditional (or not) sugar skull design, and adorn their doll with spooky accessories and a stylish marabou feather wig.
Materials Fee $30 paid at beginning of class includes:

Ever wanted a sacred little space for your favorite pebble, odd trinket, or favorite Eurpoean antique market but haven’t been able to find the piece that’s *just right*? In this playful, hands-on workshop, we’ll build small shrines, nichos, and treasure cubbies using simple materials like cardboard, plaster gauze, plaster of Paris. Think of it as creative architecture and interior decorating for your soul… in miniature. Whether you’re honoring a beloved object, a memory, your favorite handmade journal, or that treasure you can’t throw away because it’s definitely important somehow, you’ll create a unique container to hold it. Your nicho can be as wild and ornate as a folk-art altar bursting with color and texture—or sleek, minimal, and modern like a tiny architectural marvel. It’s totally up to you. You can make one or a handful, depending on your flow with the day, or shrines within shrines! And yes, we will be getting our hands and aprons dirty—in the best way. Even if you didn’t love playing in the mud as a kid, the spirit of making mud pies will be alive and well in this workshop as we engage with elemental materials with delight, curiosity, and creating something just because it felt good. That kind of messy, magical play is still in you. This workshop is a chance to rediscover your inner child's joy and sense of wonder—one sweet shrine at a time.
Materials Fee $ 12 paid at beginning of class includes:
all materials you’ll need to build a basic shrine and extra supplies provided by instructor.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
Scissors
Masking tape (A couple of yards wrapped around a pencil should be plenty. I recommend white or cream in color but any inexpensive brand is fine.)
A few artist brushes including a 1” wide soft, dense brush (not a chip brush).
Container for water for plaster gauze dipping. (A water cup is too small so something like a tupperware container big enough to hold a sandwich would be ideal.)
A few small tubes of your favorite colors of paint including a white/offwhite. (acrylic, gouache, or watercolor.
A rag, paper towels, or wipes if you frequently clean your hands while making art.
OPTIONAL:
An apron because this class can get messy!
Kraft knife WITH cutting mat (please don’t use the knife without a mat). Whichever you prefer to cut cardboard/chipboard with.
A specific item that you want to make your shrine fit perfectly or the dimensions of that item written down.
A few pieces of your favorite collage ephemera. Think about images you might like in the back of your shrine or napkins with pretty patterns that you can “wallpaper” your piece with.
Found knobs, pieces of wood, large buttons, etc that you might want to use as feet, finials, or steeples for your shrine. They can be painted or left as-is.
Small scraps of styrofoam to recycle in your art. Think flat pieces that can easily be cut as needed for the shrine.

Let’s spend a day together immersed in the elegance, beauty, and flowing rhythm of Art Nouveau. In this one-day gouache painting workshop, we’ll explore this iconic movement through the lens of design, color, and personal expression—drawing inspiration from artists like Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, and Aubrey Beardsley.
I’ll guide you step by step as we work with gouache paints—an ideal medium for capturing the soft, velvety richness and flat decorative qualities of the era. We’ll begin with drawing exercises that focus on the stylized, ornamental design that defines Art Nouveau, and from there, build our own compositions using natural forms like flowers, vines, and the figure.
This class is open to all experience levels. If you are looking to deepen your design sensibilities, reconnect with the joy of drawing and painting, or simply spend a day surrounded by the romantic, flowing energy of this artistic era, this class is for you. You’ll leave with a finished piece (or two!), some new techniques, and a fresh appreciation for this beautifully expressive style.

Fabric collage is an excellent method of composing stylized birds. There are so many astounding fabric prints that can be fussy cut to create wonderfully realistic birds. In this class, you will choose and fussy-cut botanical and floral prints, arabesques, and textures, to create a sweet little songbird perched on a branch. You will be fusing the collage with a permanent fabric adhesive, so a sewing machine will not be necessary to create your collage bird. After completion, you can frame your bird as art if you wish, or include it in an art journal. Kits of fabrics to choose from will be available, allowing you to fine-tune the colors and textures you want in your bird. Skill level: Confident beginner and up.
Please be courteous to others by arriving for class with the correct supplies. Contact me at 503-888-9784 or helene.m.knott@gmail.com if you have any questions.
Materials Fee $54 paid at beginning of class includes:
Background fabric, a variety of fabrics with suitable prints and textures for your feathered friend, fabric adhesive sheets, and several bird patterns to choose from.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
Craft Scissors: With sharp blades to cut fine details.
A craft knife and small cutting mat (optional): In the class, I will show you a marvelous way to create preview planes to choose the best sections of fabric for your bird, this technique is applicable to other future collage projects as well. If you wish to try this method, you will need a craft (X-acto) knife and a small cutting mat to cut detailed templates. Or, you can simply ‘wing it’ and go for a serendipitous design approach.

Navigating the spectrum can be overwhelming. There are some who have an intuitive grasp on color while others may find themselves baffled when it comes to creating a palette for a project. Some artists might work with colors they like and yet be disappointed with the results. Though an instinctive ability in working with color is helpful, color is basically a science and as such the basic principles of how colors behave and interact in a design, is a skill that can be learned. The study of color is a fascinating journey and this program is intended to teach the relationships between colors and values and help build confidence in selecting and planning colors for your art and design projects. This digital presentation includes some hands-on exercise sheets to allow students to explore the topic further beyond the class. Understanding the predictable behavior of color and value will enable you to approach your projects with confidence and lessen the chance that you will be dissatisfied with a completed project. One method of combining colors covered in the class, is to work from a color wheel, but in addition, you will learn other ways of creating stunning palettes along with a handout with links to some valuable online resources and apps that can be utilized to create color schemes.

This "heavy-metal" journal is reminiscent of those old time erector sets, and it is as durable as it looks. This thing will be around for years, and after you fill it with original artwork or writing, it is sure to become a fascinating conversation piece and heirloom. You will be building a large (6" x 8" x 2") all-metal journal with copper pipe hanging strap, a.k.a. "plumber's tape" and learning my unique "no-sew" wire binding. The covers, where dozens of holes alternate with altered hardware, create an magnificent effect. Both covers and spine of this book are completely fabricated "from scratch". Once you add some decorative chain and a few well-chosen beads and charms, or even bring a cool found object to attach to the cover, you make this book uniquely your own. Lots of useful techniques including cutting, bending, torching, and otherwise altering metal with chemical patinas and a torch, some basic bookbinding, and hand tool use and safety. This binding, once mastered, can be adapted all sorts of ways to make books in different sizes and other materials.

Sometimes telling the whole story isn’t necessary—in fact, what we leave out can be just as powerful. A glimpse, a fragment, an echo of what was can spark the imagination in surprising ways. We’ll start by layering a creamy texture medium we’ll make ourselves in the classroom and apply it to surfaces that can be displayed as is or adapted to be incorporated into other forms (think assemblage, book making, collage…) We can think of this phase as building the walls of a story that hasn’t been told yet. Then comes the next chapter in the story-telling: transferring our favorite images onto those textured surfaces resulting in intriguing, imperfect, ethereal images. Faces might blur, places might fade, and unexpected details will appear—echos from a memory real or imagined. It’s less about perfection and more about discovering what shows up when you let the materials lead. We’ll finish each piece with intuitive hand stitching, letting thread become another layer of meaning—connecting, mending, or simply adding rhythm. This is a space to experiment, get a little messy, and discover surprising beauty in imperfection. No perfection or precision required—just curiosity, a few images, and a willingness to follow where the materials lead.
Materials Fee $5 paid at beginning of class includes:
encaustic medium and extra supplies provided by instructo
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
3-5 pieces of heavy weight fabric in whatever size you want to work on. Anywhere from 4x6” to 8x10” will work great! This fabric could be ticking, raw canvas, or a scrap of your grandad’s blue jeans. Ideally you want something heavier than quilting fabric or muslin. (I will have some extra on hand.)
5-10 various photo copies of images you like. THESE CANNOT BE INKJET/HOME PRINTED copies. Take them to your local library or copy shop and get laser or toner copies. They can be black and white or color copies. (I like the black and white for this project.) If you are making black and white copies of color photos, I recommend you increase the contrast of the photos so there is more BLACK and WHITE and as little gray as possible.) These copies can be on regular, inexpensive copy paper. Cardstock or heavy paper isn’t necessary or helpful.
A few artist brushes including a 1” wide soft, dense brush (not a chip brush).
Small, offset spatula or palette knife
A few small tubes of your favorite colors of paint (acrylic, gouache, or watercolor. Whichever you like most.)
2-3 skeins of embroidery floss in colors that excite you. (I’ll have some extra on hand for sharing.)
Scissors
A small tub of gel medium or glue (I like Liquitex Matte Gel or Golden Soft Gel. About 8 oz. should be plenty. I prefer a matte finish but if you already have something with more sheen on hand, that will work fine.)
Acrylic paints in your favorite colors as well as an opaque white.
OPTIONAL: An apron because this class can get messy!
3-5 pieces of heavy watercolor paper (#140 lb is great) to use as an alternative to the heavy fabric or to experiment with different surfaces.
Any other materials you love using to add details or personal marks to your work: paint pens, metal leaf, clay working tools for scratching, etc. NOT required but can be fun. I will have extras to share.

Explore human proportions by using wire armatures that we will pose and attach to a wooden block, before building the muscle mass using foil, tape, and air dry clay. We will have time to add some details to the figures with a longer working time that will allow you to continue to add details even once you are home. We will use a specific method of human proportion to keep our figures in scale, using the easiest method I have found for beginning any type of 3-D figure study. You will gain confidence to sculpt a human form in almost any pose you can imagine, while keeping in scale and proportion. Sculptures can be sealed or painted once the clay is completely dry. A Two-Day Workshop in Watercolor & Gouache
In this two-day workshop, we’ll step into our own inner worlds, where dreams, memory, and imagination live, and take what we find to create colorful, symbolic works of art. Dream in Color is an invitation to explore your night mind: the place of dreams, the mysterious and layered world just beneath waking thought, where imagery awaits.
Using watercolor and the velvety opacity of gouache, we’ll experiment with techniques that allow for both control and surrender. We’ll focus on color, line, design, and symbology as we build compositions that evoke mood, story, and emotional resonance.
Throughout the weekend, you’ll be guided through a series of prompts, visual meditations, and demonstrations. We’ll take time to draw, paint, and reflect, connecting with our own personal symbols, archetypal imagery, and intuitive mark-making. There will be space for both guided exploration and self-directed studio time, allowing each participant to follow their own thread of inspiration.
This workshop is open to all levels, whether you’re a seasoned painter or just beginning to explore creative expression. By the end of our time together, you’ll have several finished pieces, a deeper connection to your creative intuition, and a growing visual vocabulary to help express what lives within your inner world.

Of all the characters in The Wizard of Oz, Tin Man was always my favorite with his witch-hardened exterior so tragically emptied of his loving heart. Our attempt to represent this beloved character starts with a porcelain doll head and hands (your choice), then moves through a few handy doll construction techniques. Sprinkle in some fun tips for uniting very different materials into a uniform piece and add some painting processes that are almost alchemy, and you'll leave with a beautiful and well-built art doll honoring the tin man in all of us. Instruction includes altering the doll head with paints, two-part resin clay, metallic surfacing agents, and torching techniques. Then, construction of the “tin” parts of his body with copper sheet metal and copper pipe, then "weathering" him with chemical patinas and fire! As we travel our own "yellow brick road", we'll also try out some basic sheet metal fabrication techniques like rolling, punching, cutting, drilling, sanding, grinding, cold-connecting, and altering metal Black Sheep style! Hang on to your ruby slippers, Dorothy... we're definitely not in Kansas anymore!
Materials Fee $45 paid at beginning of class includes:
wooden base, brass & copper sheet metal, all the needed hardware, chains, metallic surfacing paints, patinas, copper wire, two-part resin clay, copper pipe, and a tin heart (of course).

A Note on Student Supply Lists: Please bring your tools and supplies. It is not cool to expect others to share with you. We all have the same obstacles travelling with this stuff. Bring what you need, so everyone gets the most out of their classes!
Bare minimum, you will need the following tools and supplies to complete the project. Please bring to class:
* pen, pencil, scissors, ruler, sharpie, small paintbrushes
* porcelain doll head and hands... NO PLASTIC!
* tin snips or shop shears
* wire cutters
* needle nose pliers
* Phillip's #2 screwdriver
Optional items. Hey, if you have room, please throw it in!

Does a large, blank canvas leave you feeling intimidated or stuck? In this immersive, full-day workshop, we’ll shift that fear into creative flow through a playful, process-driven approach to painting BIG—both on paper and on primed canvas.
Morning Session: Big Play on Paper
We’ll begin by working in rotation on two full-size (parent sheet) pieces of paper using a wide range of mixed media: watercolors, inks, water-soluble crayons, and mark-making tools. We’ll build expressive layers using both spontaneous marks and intentional shapes, incorporating painted collage elements and ephemera as we go. You'll leave this session with two richly layered pieces—perfect as-is, or ready to tear down into art journal pages, cards, or collage fodder.
Afternoon Session: Fearless Canvas Exploration
In the second half of our day, we’ll move to working on a large (approx. 30" x 30") primed canvas. Through guided prompts and demoed techniques, I’ll show you how to approach a big, blank space with curiosity instead of fear. We’ll layer intuitively with acrylics, gestural marks, stencils, and mixed media ephemera to create an abstract expression uniquely your own. Your finished canvas can be framed, stitched, reworked, or displayed just as it is.
This is a joyful, low-pressure workshop that celebrates exploration and encourages you to trust your creative instincts. The focus is on process over product, making space for personal expression and playful discovery.
Materials Fee $25 paid at beginning of class includes:
Primed Canvas and parent sheets of Watercolor Paper, Custom designed stencil, collage ephemera packet
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:

A sampling of basic hand embroidery stitches grace an appliqued felt Persian Pickle (otherwise known as Paisley). The symbolism of the paisley motif is vague though thought to be a stylized Cypress tree, originating from ancient Persia from where it spread to other cultures. As a design, Paisley motifs are usually heavily ornamented. In this class, you will make an appliqued felt or wool Paisley and adorn it with hand embroidery stitches in an improvisational approach. The individual stitches are simple, but collectively, they will create an exotic masterpiece. You will only have time to make one Pickle motif in class but can add more of them to your project for a sampler of stitchery afterwards. Kits will be available. Skill Level: confident beginner and up. Note: This project is all handwork, no sewing machine required.

In this basic assemblage workshop, you will learn how to create an eclectic, free standing shrine and a small book, starting with only two pieces of wood, canvas, and a few of your favorite treasures. Technique and Project.
Not everything needs to be tidy, tasteful, or tied up in a matching ribbon. In fact, some of the most compelling art is a little unruly, deeply layered, and proudly imperfect. This two-day mixed media retreat is a celebration of going off-script, letting your materials lead the way, and creating from that deliciously unpredictable place where real magic lives.
We’re here to break a few rules (gently), rip some edges (enthusiastically), and lean into the mystery of what happens when you give yourself full permission to make a glorious mess. Whether you’ve been making art for years or are just itching to try something new, you’ll find a welcoming, joy-filled space to explore, experiment, and surprise yourself.
Here’s what’s in store:
** Day One – We’ll kick things off by building a rich stash of textured, layered, and wildly expressive papers. Think rusting, staining, mark making, paint peeling, and multi-layered tearing and distressing that’ll make your inner rebel sing. You’ll walk away with a pile of papers that practically hum with possibility.
** Day Two – Time to channel all that juicy chaos into a rogue art book. This isn’t your tidy little scrapbook—this is a small but powerful art object packed with energy, emotion, and unexpected twists. We’ll play with composition, explore unusual combinations, and incorporate tip-outs, surprise shapes, and any other delightful detours that emerge along the way.
Your creative voice is the main event here. My role? To share an overflowing toolbox of techniques, offer suggestions when you want them, and cheer you on as you dive into your own unique process.
This is your invitation to step off the beaten path and let your creativity lead the way—no map required.

Have you ever looked at a cuddly teddy bear and thought, "I sure would enjoy ripping off that thing's cute face"? Well, now's your chance to indulge that twisted impulse! In this unique art class, you'll take two of those sad, discarded little plushies from the thrift store and transform them into spooky, skeleton-faced creatures that will forever haunt the children who so callously left them in the discard bin. Swap out that cute, fuzzy face for a creepy skull, add some other various dark details, and watch once cuddly toys become much more sinister playthings!
Not only is this a fun and creative way to explore your morbid side, but it's also a relatively eco-friendly activity. By upcycling old toys, you're keeping waste out of landfills and giving new life to materials that would very likely be discarded. It's a win-win for your inner artist and the planet.
So, whether you're a goth, a horror fan, someone who appreciates the irony of juxtaposition, or just generally a 'Halloweenie" type weirdo, Deady Bears is the class for you. Unleash your creepy creativity, indulge your delightful dark side, and walk away with disturbing creations that you can proudly display in your haunted house. Get ready to breathe new life (or death) into the discarded and embrace the macabre!
In this workshop, students will upcycle 2 thrift store plushies into creepy, skeleton-faced creatures, explore the dark side of their creativity in a fun, easy art class, keep a little waste out of the landfills by giving old toys a new (albeit somewhat sinister) purpose, and walk away with a pair of hauntingly adorable monstrosities to love and fear.
Materials Fee $20 paid at beginning of class includes:
instruction booklet, two 4" plastic skulls, black and white acrylic paint, craft glue, and lots of other creepy accoutrements to adorn and enhance your creations
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
A Note on Student Supply Lists: Please bring your tools and supplies. It is not cool to expect others to share with you. We all have the same obstacles when travelling with this stuff. Bring what you will need, so everyone gets the most out of their classes!

We often describe our work as ‘too busy’. Understandably so as Mixed Media in its essence is often a multilayered process in which we add much more than we remove. There is beauty in that and great satisfaction too. However, often times it becomes ‘too much’ and we find ourselves wanting ‘less’. We crave spaciousness, ‘breathing room’, and movement. In this 2 day workshop we’ll explore the concept of ‘Less is More’, explore minimalism in Mixed Media, a new way of being ourselves.
Supplies Needed to Bring to Class:
Bring with you ~10 small surfaces (at least) you can’t wait to work on.......
Small canvases of your choice, card boards, wood panels, old vintage book boards, etc.
-A sidekick - a used/vintage book with images/photographs/illustrations you love, to be altered. (Book should lay flat when worked on and preferably not glossy)
-Acrylic Paints (a few colors of your choice), a container for water, paper towels or/and rags
-White Gesso
-Black Gesso
-A couple of different size brushes, from very thin to wide and flat

-Fine permanent black pens.

In this class you will make connections with the obvious and the unexpected. You will create a variety of pieces that will be sewn together to create a beautiful, organic wall hanging using fabric, fibres, paint, carved lino prints and natural elements. What kinds of connections can you make with your materials? How do they connect to your soul? To Mother Earth? What are the unexpected connections you’ve discovered in your journey through this project that may connect to your life’s journey? What are the metaphors that may arise as you create?
Through a series of open ended techniques, you will work at your own level to experiment and explore boundaries of your materials and how they can work and affect one another; you will create a variety of works that will be cut, torn, and stitched together as a unique wall collage.
You will be gently encouraged and guided to be curious and try new things as you assemble your elements to create a visually and kinesthetically stunning and soulful piece.

A concertina (aka accordion) book is one of the easiest types of books you can create on your own! I love this format because it functions like a traditional book, allowing you to turn the pages. Additionally, you can unfold it completely to display all the pages simultaneously.
Concertina Books are perfect for using as art journals, sketchbooks, junk journals, travel journals, and photo albums.
During the morning session, we will concentrate on designing the cover for our Concertina Book. I will demonstrate some fun creative mixed-media methods, using layers of collage, acrylic paint, and various other techniques.
In the afternoon, we'll create our concertina (accordion) folded books. This type of fold enables the sketchbook to unfold into a single sheet of paper that is 8 feet long! This adaptable format allows for personal adjustments to the substrate size, from using individual sheets measuring 6" x 8.25" to working across multiple folds for panoramas or landscapes. With 16 continuous sheets (32 sides), these distinctive sketchbooks will be crafted from Strathmore Watercolor paper.
We'll design hard covers for our sketchbooks using our own handmade designs, and a ribbon closure will complete our book.
By the end of the workshop, you will have gained a wide range of painting and collage techniques, along with a finished Concertina Book!

Dive into layers, then carve your way back to clarity. In this evening workshop, we’ll explore the dynamic push and pull of mixed media by starting with abundance—marks, colors, textures—and finishing with elegant restraint.
Working on a trio of wooden panels, you’ll build up rich, expressive backgrounds using a variety of mixed media techniques: think collage, scribbles, stencils, stamps, paint, and whatever else wants to make its way into the mix. Once your surfaces are full of texture and energy, you’ll learn how to reduce—masking a focal shape or silhouette and painting out the rest to reveal a strong, bold composition from the chaos.
This process is not only visually satisfying—it’s a powerful creative metaphor: sometimes, clarity emerges only after the messy middle.
You’ll leave with three striking, one-of-a-kind panels that reflect your personal story and style, plus a technique you’ll want to return to again and again.

Step into the wild, wonderful world of eco dyeing—where plants, pressure, and a little bit of heat combine to create unexpected beauty on fabric. In this playful and fast-paced two-day workshop, you’ll explore the art (and science!) of contact print dyeing—a process where leaves, flowers, rusty bits, and all sorts of curious materials leave their marks behind in surprising, often magical ways.
We’ll dive into the fundamentals: how to choose and prep fabric, use mordants, bundle botanicals, and coax out rich, organic patterns with steam and time. But don’t expect rigid rules—this class is all about experimentation, discovery, and embracing the glorious unpredictability of nature's palette.
Bring your curiosity and a few fabric pieces you'd love to transform—everything else, including an extensive array of plants, supplies, and equipment, will be ready and waiting for you. You'll be guided every step of the way with plenty of encouragement, creative mischief, and room to explore. You'll go home with a beautiful stash of one-of-a-kind fabrics—perfect for stitching, collaging, bookmaking, or just admiring!
With two full days together, you'll have the time and space to play, experiment, and let your creativity roam. This is also a perfect opportunity to engage in sustainable art-making—recycling and transforming textiles in a world where fabric waste is all too common.
No experience necessary. Just come ready to play, bundle, unwrap, and celebrate the happy accidents along the way.

I'll guide you through my intuitive painting process and share: My integration of a whole hearted practice with including meditation and journaling, painting demonstrations aplenty, mark making and layering techniques, my favorite paints and tools, color mixing tips and tricks, and how to use fresh flowers and reference photos for inspiration.
This isn’t a paint by numbers class. Those serve their purpose, but I don’t want you to paint like me or everyone else. Here you’ll tell your own story and explore your unique style.
Open to all levels. Seasoned painters and first-time painters are wholeheartedly encouraged to join. If you're a beginner who has never painted or an experienced painter feeling creatively stuck and in need of a boost of fresh inspiration, this course is for you!

This class is open to all levels including those who have never painted before. this is a great class for anyone who has struggled with or would simply like to explore new and expressed ways of creating faces. using fun simple techniqes we will carve imagery into - ez carve printing blocks, and experiment with mono printing. allowing us to print the imagery in a variety of ways. its more about the way we print the image then the complexity of the carving. in most cases the simpiler the better. Once we have experimented with carving and printing we will be ready to work the pieces into expressed artifacts. reshaping, and reworking the imagery in ways that give it an aged and weathered look. we will use text and symbols to add meaning and question within the work.
Using block printing as a base for creation will allow experimentation without the fear of mistakes. We will be able to repeat the imagery with ease by simply reprinting from our carvings. this repeated imagery will encourage us to experiment with new techniques like subtraction methods and compare the various printing and redefining methods against one another. the techniques are quick simple and imediate keeping things fun and moving forward.
These techniques and concepts work perfectly in connection with any of my other painting methods. So if youve taken a class with me previously these techniques will act as new tools which you can incorporate with any other concepts you have learned.
If you would like to learn more about my teaching style and my background you can check out the videos below
In this video I explain my ideas and motivation while painting. if you ever wanted to take a class with me this video will give you a good idea of how I teach and think about painting.

In the name of freedom and play, let's paint abstract faces!
I invite you to spend the day with me letting loose, slinging paint, and having fun. You'll be gently guided and supported every step of the way.
When I first started painting, faces and figures were the subject matter that scared me the most. However, with a lot of practice and some key lessons learned, they now come easily. In fact, it's what I paint most often in my art journal for comfort.
If painting faces seems scary to you, I want to demonstrate how to simplify the process. I will provide lessons to get you started and help subside those fears. I'll encourage you to paint perfectly imperfect abstract faces.
Faces tell stories like no other subject and I'll invite you to infuse your faces with your own stories. We'll start with intention setting and art journal prompts followed by several guided painting excercises using a vareity of tools, mediums, and palettes. Included are tips for setting up your painting station, mark making, color and composition, techniques for building layers, and so much more.
Open to all levels. Seasoned painters and first-time painters are wholeheartedly encouraged to join. If you're a beginner who has never painted or an experienced painter feeling creatively stuck and in need of a boost of inspiration, this course is for you.

The Gelli plate is so much more than just a background-maker. In this one-day workshop, we’ll take a painterly, process-driven approach to Gelli printing—one that results in stand-alone works of art that feel personal, layered, and expressive.
You don’t need to know how to draw to make something beautiful. We’ll use the plate as a springboard to create images with depth and intention, exploring techniques that move beyond the usual Gelli routine.
What we’ll explore:
• Reverse painting, a method for building images from the inside out
• Drawing materials—like pencils and pastels—used in unexpected ways
• Embossing through pressure, including the delightfully rogue use of a humble ballpoint pen
• Simple, low-tech image reproduction—no frustrating transfers here
You’ll work from images that inspire you—whether that’s something meaningful from home or one from my collection of curious and beautiful source material.
Like always, I’ll demonstrate the techniques, offer tips and guidance, and cheer you on as you find your own creative rhythm. There’s room for experimentation, quiet discovery, and even a few surprises along the way.
This is an invitation to approach the Gelli plate as a tool for making complete, expressive artwork—with a little mess, a lot of play, and results you might not expect (in the best way).
