A book’s spine is usually designed to hold everything together. But what happens when the spine itself becomes a beautiful and visible part of the artwork?
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to create an intricate woven spine for a journal or artist’s book. Using waxed linen and strips of paper, we’ll explore the possibilities of color, texture, pattern, and repetition as the woven structure gradually becomes both the binding and an important visual element of the finished book.
Participants will learn the basic construction techniques needed to create a sturdy woven spine, then have the opportunity to experiment with different weaving patterns and material combinations. Each finished journal will be unique, reflecting the maker's choices and imagination.
No previous bookmaking or weaving experience is necessary
