Fine Feathered Friends

The brightly colored Western bluebird and the majestic nocturnal barn owl are some of the fine feathered friends that we will paint in this watercolor and mixed-media workshop. Starting with fun, colorful watercolor washes, you will learn how to use granulating colors and control the paint to create loose, impressionistic bird paintings. These will be layered paintings using ribbons and lace as the final touch. Details will be added using darker colors and mixed-media acrylic supplies. We will play with adding inks, paints, collage, rubber stamps, ribbons, and other interesting items that enhance, enrich, and create these lively, beautiful paintings of birds.  

Materials fee $15 paid directly to instructor at beginning of class includes:

Watercolor paint samples, inks, masa paper, ribbons and lace, acrylic paints, rubber stamps and ink pads, collage paper, gouache, stencils, iridescent paints

Supplies You Need to Bring to Class in addition to materials provided by instructor:

• Top quality watercolor paints (not student grade) and palette.
• Watercolor brushes in a variety of sizes such as Princeton Brush & Co. Series 4050: round #3, round #8, and a liner brush size #2 or #4
• Good quality watercolor paper such as Arches cold press watercolor blocks 7 x 10 or 9 x 12
• A board and a clip to hold loose paper while painting
• A couple pieces of 9 x 12 watercolor paper or other acid free paper to mount our paintings on.
• YES Paste
• A small jar of acrylic gel medium, brush, and a brayer
• Small cotton cloth or washcloth, a pencil and eraser, small spray bottle, a permanent black ink pen, Uni-ball Signo white gel ink pen,
OPTIONAL: ribbons, rubber stamps of quotes or interesting designs, washi tape, and other fun items to add to your paintings. Sharpie oil-based paint pens or other colored markers

A note about color from Jacqueline – Here are some of my favorite watercolors (Winsor Newton, Daniel Smith, Holbein, and Sennelier are some trusted brands): Cobalt blue, cerulean blue, French ultra-marine, permanent magenta, permanent rose, French vermilion, quinacridone red, new gamboge or Indian yellow, Hansa or lemon yellow, quinacridone gold.
