Wabi sabi is the Japanese art of impermanence. This Japanese aesthetic is a beauty of things imperfect, imperfect and incomplete... rustic, earthy, simple, textured, and organic. Boro is a Japanese word meaning "tattered rags" and used to describe patched clothing and bedding. Today, Boro articles of clothing are considered national treasures. Boro embodies the Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi. Instead of fabric, we will used hand painted rice papers. On the first day, artists will make their own collage papers in the tradition of Boro, using paint, rice papers, rubber stamps, stamping tools and stencils. On the second day, the artist will learn simple compositions and design elements based on Zen tenets like balance and harmony. Artists will recreate this "boro" effect by placing their own papers 'quilt-like' onto cards, tags, boxes or small collages. They will return home feeling blessed by Buddha.
