Using wooden, sewing spools as a base, we will paint, ink, stamp, mark make, stitch, and ultimately wind our way to mixed media mayhem. This workshop will focus on surface design, with an emphasis on creating loosely and without overthinking. We will start by hand-stitching together your choice of paper and fabric to create long strands to work over. Following this, we will apply mixed media techniques to create a unique design, filled edge-to-edge and end-to-end with your favorite colors, personal symbols, and both hand-drawn and stamped marks. We will each complete multiple spools, allowing for many different display options – both free-standing and hung. Spools will be provided but you are asked to bring your own paper, fabric and thread to further personalize your creation.

Vintage Spools
Stencils and background/symbol stamps to share (although feel free to bring in your own as well)
 

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

Paper and/or Fabric – any paper 90lbs or less in weight will work. While you can
bring in pre-painted or scrapbook paper as a base, plain lightweight watercolor
paper or cardstock will also work. Lightweight fabric that you are willing/able to
paint/ink over will also work.
Fiber Strands – you will need several of these as a way to close your wrapping
around your spools. Options are sari silk ribbon, torn fabric strips, etc.
Acrylic Paint – just bring a few bottles of your favorite colors
Dye Ink Pads (Distress are my favorite)
Scissors to cut paper, fabric and thread
Ruler to use to tear paper for rough edges
Needle and thread in your choice of colors
Favorite Adhesive (for example glue stick, PVA, matte medium, etc.)
Craft Sponges
Your favorite mark makers (pens, pencils, markers, crayons, etc.)
