P213 - Eco & Rust Fabric Dyeing

$ 150

Come spend the day creating a stash of one of a kind original fabric using alternative dyeing and mark making methods. Why choose the usual path? Who needs traditional dyes? I will be sharing my crazy experiments with dyeing fabric using nontraditional material: plants, rusty metal, cleaning products, and other strange concoctions. I will teach you my version of the magical process of contact print dyeing also known as Ecodyeing.   We will be bundling and unwrapping and celebrating the happy accidents and surprise results. You will leave class with numerous unique pieces of fabric to be used in future creations.

Supply List to bring to class:

• Smaller pieces of white or light colored fabric approximately the size of a fat quarter yard. Silk, cotton, and wool are the “recommended” fabrics for these dyeing processes but I have had some striking results with synthetic as well. I am a big proponent of recycled textiles so feel free to bring vintage lace, hankies, old rags, or even that weird shirt you never wear. This class is about experimentation
Dharma Trading Company is a good source for reasonable silk yardage and silk scarves if that strikes your fancy. http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/silk/silk-fabrics.html

• String for bundling your fabric. Again experimentation is the name of the game (cotton twine, sewing thread, embroidery floss, garden twine, yarn, thin rope)

• A bundle of dried eucalyptus

• Absorbent rags or paper towels for mopping up messes

• An apron or wear old clothes. We are going to get messy

• Several Ziploc bags 1 or 2 gallon size

• Random local plant material or a cheap bouquet of flowers
• Embroidery thread and needle
• Fabric paints
• Inktense pencils or blocks (Don’t buy just for this class)
• Heat gun for the impatient among us.
• “Special” rust objects (there will be lots of general rusty objects provided for class use)

Supply fee $15 payable to instructor at beginning of class includes:
Equipment for steaming
Plant material
Strange concoctions
Rusty junk
Extra fabric
Fabric paints
Nitrile gloves

P.S. No stressing allowed, it is about the creative process, not the specific supplies. Please email if you have any questions. clarissacallesen@gmail.com
