P229 - Beyond the Color Wheel: Exploring Color and Pigment (in acrylic paint)

Jane Davies
9:00 - 4:30
Tuesday & Wednesday 2 Day Class

[back to quicklinks]
$ 295

This is a color-mixing workshop that will give you a deeper understanding of your paints and pigments. Spend the first day delving into your paints, coaxing them into colors and configurations you never dreamed of! On the second day we will develop personal color palettes, using harmonies and contrasts that speak to you. This is not your mother’s Color Theory class, nor is it about prescribed color schemes that “work.” It is about the mechanics of color and pigment. Seeing color through this lens will allow you to develop your personal style and express who you are with paint.

A basic understanding of color relationships and terminology are required for this class. Terms you should be familiar with: primary, secondary, tertiary, complementary, analogous, value, saturation. If these are all terms you understand, you can take this class.

Supplies You Need to Bring to Class in addition to materials provided by instructor:

Paper: Smooth printmaking paper, such as Stonehenge (this is what I use), or smooth, hot-press, watercolor paper, cut to 8”x8” or 8”x10” or 10”x10”; about twelve pieces.

Glazing Medium or Glazing Liquid: this keeps your paints wet longer, and extends (dilutes) them.

Matte Medium: I recommend Utrecht (available at Blick) for collage applications.

Brushes: bring what you are comfortable with. Look at my Favorite Materials page on my website for a link to the brushes I use. Several sizes.

Palette Knife: for mixing paints on the palette

Palette: pad of paper style disposable palette

Container for water

Big Fat Roll of Paper Towels

Materials fee $5 paid directly to instructor at beginning of class includes:
Yes, $5 for $3 worth of cheap drawing paper. The extra pays for my time and expense of ordering it and getting it to the workshop.
