P342 - Fabric Angel Book with Fabric Wings

In this class I will be teaching you how to make a fabric 4 signature book (7" x 10") I will instruct how to make coptic binding technique to attach the signatures. The cover will be in the shape of a wing that is created using plaster and gessoed fabrics. I demonstrate how to make gesso and plaster covered fabric for the pages and how to make lace, fabric, plaster borders to trim your pages.
The first day we will prep our pages with gesso and plaster. We will bind the book and make our wings. I will start to demonstrate techniques to create interesting and mysterious pages with angels as the theme.
The next day we continue working on our pages using mixed media painting and collaging techniques. Techniques demonstrated are collage, image transfers, drawing, painting with watercolors, gesso and pastels. We will paint angels as well as angelic symbols and icons using paint, stamps, applying plaster with stencils to create beautiful textures.
Materials fee $10 paid directly to instructor at beginning of class includes:
waxed linen
tapesty needle
clothes pins
wire for wings and decoration

I will have assorted stamps and stencils available for use
Re-inkers to share with the students

Supplies You Need to Bring to Class in addition to materials provided by instructor:

assorted fabrics for the pages (size 14" x 10"). They could be vintage linens or linen and cotton fabrics of various thicknesses. At least 12 pieces
140lb hot press watercolor paper- 11” x17” one sheet
putty knife
assorted watercolors (reds,blues and yellows) OPTIONAL Daniel Smith watercolors I use are rose madder geniune, burgandy yellow ochre, piemontite genuine
acrylics-paynes gray, quin. Nickel azo gold, quin. crimson
Golden open acrylic titanium white
White soft pastel
matte medium
wood or craft glue
Brushes: 1/4" and 1/8" angular brushes (golden taklon) Princeton select carries these and you can get them at Michaels
#0 or "1 pointed watercolor brush for detail work, any larger watercolor and acrylic brushes of your choice, a cheap utility brush for applying gesso and matte medium
pencils and charcoal
awl for piercing holes for binding book
for collage and image ephemera transfers. I will have a selection of images to offer in class , but try to bring images that you want to use. Images of faces and figures to collage or image transfer.
