Wabi Sabi is a Japanese philosophy that believes beauty can be found in what is naturally imperfect, aged and weathered. When we learn to accept what is unfolding before us without judgment and expectations, we allow artistic beauty to happen. In this class, you will be creating and customizing your own handmade Mini Wabi Sabi Book from scratch. You will incorporate handmade papers, fabrics, stitching and other natural materials to captures the feel of Wabi Sabi.

Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
9 x 12 inch 90 lb. Mixed Media OR Watercolor Paper
White Gesso
Matte medium, decoupage OR Mod Podge
Aleeneās Quick Drying Tacky glue
Watercolor Paint (pan set or tube) in Natural colors (ie. yellow ochre, raw umber, black, unbleached titanium white or buff, burnt sienna, etc.
Awl (If you are flying in, the instructor will have a few extras to borrow)
Bone folder or burnisher
Putty spreader or squeegee for collaging
Embroidery floss, craft cord OR Shashiko thread (neutral colors + black)
Embroidery needle
Scissors OR Xacto Knife & cutting mat
Muslin (roughly 9 x 12 inches)
Fabric scraps that look wabi sabi (linen, eco dyed, cheesecloth, neutral tones, aged, stained, etc.)
Mark making tools (ie. palette knife, old paint brush, fan brush, string, sea sponge, etc.)
Paint brushes (variety of sizes to be used for watercolor & gesso)
Brush to apply matte medium
Found objects (ie. flat pebbles, asian coins, feathers, stones, small sticks, skeleton leaves, etc.)
Straight edge or ruler
White Plastic Plates
Paper Towels
Cup & bucket (portable collapsable) for water (Note: there will be no sinks in the classrooms, but you will be able to fill your cups/buckets with water).
Hairdryer with power strip
Tim Holtz Distressed Inks (Optional)
