The Peace Quilt

$ 185

I designed the Peace quilt to keep my hands busy during stressful times, it's hard to
think about the negative stuff while focusing on stitching. lol.
At first we'll be ripping and cutting our scraps while exploring color, contrasts, textures and shapes. Then we'll choose our first scrap, the one that catches your eye, satisfies your fingers and maybe pulls on your heartstrings - I'll be doing demos on some of my parent's clothing, may they rest in peace.
After choosing the next scrap the sewing begins, this is where I will begin to teach you my instinctual method of stitching. We'll add a few layers with smaller pieces of fabric, buttons and baubles, then we'll add more #instinctualstitching for further embellishment and discuss using thread as a mark making device and glue. I'll also share the story behind why I stitch in this manner and my main source of inspiration.

Materials Fee $5 paid at beginning of class includes:

Upcycled Books: Let's Not Say - "junk journal"!

$ 185

Let’s create new journals from old books! (Or even new books).
Using a hard-covered book, you will learn how to successfully deconstruct it by
removing the text block. We will then reinforce the spine and create signatures (groups of papers to form the pages).The signatures are not just any old papers; they will include papers you will create using paints, stencils, stamps, and more! Once that’s finished, then it’s time to decide how you want to organize your pages, and we will talk about the various options.
Using a variety of bookbinding tools, I will show you how to stitch in the signatures, and create the inside covers. Choose a book whose cover you like, as we will not be covering
the covers, but rather leaving them as they are, or decorating them. Once the books are created, I will share my 14 favorite ways to embellish the pages, including pockets, tip-ins, pattern repetition, and more. You will leave this workshop with a true, one-of-a-kind treasure book!

By weaving words with watercolor, students will go beyond the traditional approach to watercolor moving into something inspiring – something personal. Abstracted Landscape

$ 185

What does it mean to create a painting that is informed by the natural world around us, but is not exactly representational? The difference between representational painting and abstract painting is that in abstract work, the subject is not as evident. Working with acrylic paints, students will be encouraged to let go of object orientation and see the landscape simply as shapes, colors and values. This workshop explores abstraction, composition, color and mark making, through the lens of landscape Students will learn how to coax hints of reality from an abstract background and perhaps how to integrate some textural and/or collage materials.
We will work with reference imagery and transform it into rich, energetic paintings. Starting with some warm up exercises – we’ll create a series of several quickly done small abstracts on paper or in a journal/sketchbook. We’ll then move onto a larger substrate and start fresh with the same reference image. The goal is to create abstract paintings reminiscent of the world around us.

Materials Fee $15 paid at beginning of class includes:

• 6 Small pieces (about 6” x 9”) of 140# CP watercolor paper
• All paints and mediums
• Tissue, Napkins or deli paper to use for collage

The Vibrant and Colorful Painter

$ 185

Flowers! Honestly when I paint flowers I feel empowered. They can be any shape, size, color, abstract or simple. However, the true magic of painting flowers happens when the artist embraces the simple techniques I will share with you in this course.
Like abstract art, I believe we emote as floral painters by the brushmarks and the intensity of color we leave on the canvas. I will teach you how to make the painted marks emerge as bold blooms, the layered strokes become simplified petals and the apply color to create vibrations of energy that reach beyond the surface and differentiate your work from the ordinary.
I will guide you to paint freer and more confidently as color, composition and form transform into fluid movement across your canvas.

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

 Heavy Body Acrylic paints (any and all colors welcome!!)
 Two 16x20 canvases
 Paper surface or art journal - these could be in an art journal, smaller canvases, paper,
etc. this is where we can practice and explore color.

etc)
 Sta-Wet Palette
Extra heavy gel medium (OPtionali like to use this to thicken my acrylics)

Fabulous Locker Hooking

$ 100

While Locker Hooking is certainly not as intricate, detailed, or exacting as so much of our fiber art world, it is a fantastic way to use up tons of stash or "questionable" yarn, wind up with a cushy, beautiful product, and experience the joy of almost
instant gratification! (I'm especially fond of that last one!) Even ugly, scratchy fiber results in a beautiful, durable piece of art.  Artists can add to the basic instruction by incorporating strips of material, ribbons, etc., to reflect their own imaginations.  The instant gratification thing - this is a fiber art that goes quickly - students can actually see their progress as opposed to the delicate, ultra-fine garments lots of us never seem to get finished.   Come, relax, and enjoy!

Materials Fee $45  paid at beginning of class includes:

Locker hook.
Prepared canvas
Roving.
Binder yarns.
Various yarns.
Bound 28 page instruction book.

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

Just small scissors, paper and pen, and a bit of patience!

Painted Portals

$ 365

DAY 1
On the first day, I will demonstrate and teach a maximalist approach with numerous ways to help you manipulate and apply paint onto a canvas so that you can build up layers, causing the canvas to transition from a “young” canvas to a “mature” canvas. The first part of the class will move quickly on purpose, to get you to stop over-thinking and simply try the methods out quickly. For the rest of this day, as we start to digest the methods and as we potentially discover new ones together, we will rely more on our intuition as we each make decisions, solve problems, and wrestle with the resounding “what next?” when it comes to building layers on a canvas.

DAY 2
On the second day, we will embark on selecting one of our canvases from the first day to deliberately paint a subject of a portal, using a photo reference. I will bring photo references of portals that you can use or you can bring references that you have collected. We will first start with a sketch that we make on top of one of the canvases from Day 1, then paint values of the portals, and then add color as we quiet down the rest of the canvas with strategic areas that we keep alive with evidence of our work from Day 1. On this day, you may decide to take one of the other canvases to coax out stories or concepts that the canvas may be projecting out, through the marks that were made. As time allows, you may be able to do both.

TECHNIQUES
o Overview of tools and materials with principles of best practices in terms of handling paints and caring for tools
o Warm-up exercises to get our mindsets into new ways of thinking and seeing and feeling
o Demonstration and teaching of how to build layers of paint on a blank canvas using 15+ methods
o Discussion of concepts drawn from literature that have applications on how to overcome creative barriers during the creative process
o Discussion of lifelong journey involving how to make the art we make our own by reaching deep into who we are and allowing who we are to be expressed on our canvases
o Principles of solving problems and deciding when a work is finished or finished for the time being
o How to look at and discover concepts that the canvas communicates and how to coax such concepts out into distinctive imagery
o How to apply representational concepts onto the canvas by working with references and quiet the background, and when appropriate, to add shadows for still life-inspired images

Freedom to Create - 3 Day Class

$ 500

This is an open level class as there is plenty to be learned by someone who has never painted before or those who are full time artists and teachers. A mix of demonstration, lecture and hands on painting will introduce students to my ideas, techniques and the concepts that motivate my work.

In this mixed-media painting class you will learn to create paintings that emerge from an abstract base of markings, colors, line, and shape to form expressive and organic creations. Students will learn painting and mark making techniques that will encourage imagery and connection to their work. Through a series of painting exercises, you will explore and express your ideas by imagining what could be created from abstraction rather than confining your ideas to predetermined outcomes. Within the process we will create narrative dialogue by noting what we see and feel in our work . Through the practice of subtractive painting we will remove the parts that are no longer relevant or keep us trapped from progress. This teaches us choice and freedom to change direction in our work. We continually build layers within our paintings combining fragments of passed ideas with the new until we arrive at a feeling of completion . Through this engagement we learn to experiment, take risks, re associate our work from perspectives unconfined by our expectations. This allows us to see things clearly and move to a more expressed and personal engagement when painting. Using simple materials and techniques you will be free to express yourself within your paintings in new ways. finding yourself as a painter from the raw base of art, learning your personal likes dislikes. Connecting you to your practice and imagery from a position of experimentation and instinct. Teaching you to imagine the unimaginable.

For me painting is an experience in every way, i love the feeling of each
of my mediums and methods, drawing clenched fisted, wrong handed, without
looking, using my hand and palms to smear and mix acrylic paints, using
brushes, scrapers, oil crayons, and pastels in any way that comes to mind.
I'm always looking for a new technique to inspire me.. painting in many
reckless layers searching for a meaning in random intentions, then pulling
out the images i begin to see. This is what I will aim to instill in all
of you.. the excitement of the unexpected.. creating in ways that don't
seem logical. This is a key step towards understanding intuition

Treasure Book

$ 185

I love the various scraps of papers and fabrics I have saved from previous projects and I was inspired to make a book to hold them. It’s satisfying to use my little treasures to create pages and interesting ephemeral elements.
You will learn how to create your own scrumptious and thought provoking Treasure Book to feature your own favorite tidbits. You’ll enjoy choosing the pieces you’ll work with, and use collage, stitching and layering to build pages. You’ll create photo transfers on fabric, add vintage photographs that you will alter and use my instinctual method of stitching and a little weaving to embellish the pages and book cover. You will enjoy auditioning your pages and making decisions about how the papers and fabrics will relate to each other so you can arrange them in the order you choose. After binding the book, we’ll continue to add details, add an extra page or two and create a closure for our books.

Metamorphosis

$ 185

Metamorphosis is the process of transformation – a transition from one form into another – a dramatic evolving of something from a simple to a more complex form. As an artist, it is a goal to always be striving for the next level of understanding and to
continually evolve. This workshop will intertwine bold  layers of color, dynamic shapes, and rhythmic patterns to create an emotional connection, a new way of looking at a subject, and a new way of painting. Students will learn powerful design concepts, color
value, the importance of color play, and strong composition. This will all combine to transform each student’s ideas about design, color and composition! To see paintings created with this technique, visit the artist’s webpage for her Metamorphosis Collection -
www.trishmckinney.com/metamorphosis - these paintings tell the story about her own daughter’s transformation.

Ordinary to Extraordinary: An Artist's Book

$ 185

Creative people love to surround themselves and draw inspiration from our stash of treasures, and sometimes “Our Treasures” are simple recycled materials. Inspiration for this book comes from my collection of small recycled boxes and packaging I could not bring myself to throw away. Using recycled materials you will transform the ordinary into something extraordinary and unique to your personal expression. Additionally, you can utilize other collage materials and ephemera you may have in your stash.

First, we will prepare the packaging & small boxes for the mixed media layering process that will become the cover and pages of your book. We will then use several mixed media techniques, painting, drawing, stenciling, stamps and more to create the layers and develop a color palette and theme for your artist book. We play around with the different sizes of pages that create another level of layering and bind the book in class. The book form will be completed in class, and then you can continue adding to embellish at your own pace.  Students can email me at: padgettroxanne3@gmail.com

Expressive Figures

$ 365

Rendering the human figure is both vulnerable and intrinsically beautiful. You will learn to paint the movements of the body and explore expressive intentions and emotions through each mark of color. Your painting will evoke a powerful, dreamlike quality.
My personal style is to render the body in an abstracted block of colors and bold brushwork. The figures emerge as broken, but beautifully constructed and expressively raw.
Overview of the Workshop Lessons
? Complete 1-2 figurative paintings.
? On Day 1 we will work together from the same image (image will be provided prior to class) and on Day 2, I encourage a student choice for individualized work.
? This workshop can be done in acrylics or oils (or both).
We will not be striving for realism but strictly focussing on the expressive quality of painting the figure.
We will explore paint colors, skin tones and color mixing.
Elements of composition.
Subjects should be drawn onto surfaces prior to class ( i like to use a projector, it's easier!)
Defining the body through shadow and light.
Highlighting the stylistic differences each artist brings to their own painting.

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

Students will need to bring the following supplies:
? Two 18x24 or larger canvases
? Paint colors (Either acrylic or oil)
? Titanium white
? Carbon Black
? Raw Umber or Burnt Umber
? Yellow Ochre
? Cadmium Red
? Paynes Gray or similar blue
? Princeton Catalyst Silicone wedge, size #6
? Paintbrushes. I like a variety of flat brushes in a couple sizes and maybe a round for
details. I recommend using what you have on hand and not buying anything new for the
workshop.
? I will bring 2 reference images to work from but some students like the option to work from
one of their own choosing on the second day.
? Water bucket to clean brushes
? Paper towels and/or baby wipes
? Golden OPEN acrylic medium (optional, but this keeps your paint workable and
easier to blend longer)
? Sta-wet palette
? Palette knife for mixing colors
? Easel Tabletop or standing

Create it Collage

$ 185

What makes your mixed media artwork 100% original and unique is creating your own collage materials. This approach moves you beyond pre-designed stencils or patterns that have been duplicated by other mixed media artists. Each of us has our own artistic preferences when it comes to color schemes, certain patterns and designs. This influences our unique artistic style. Therefore, when you create your own collage materials, they are infused with decisions and choices that you made during the creative process. This is uniquely your own. Having a nice collection of your own custom collage materials provides a wider selection to choose from when you’re working on your mixed media projects.
Join me as we spend a day having fun creating unique collage papers creating your own stamp designs with a hot glue gun and cut out foam. You’ll get to use these stamps in the gelli printing process to make your unique patterned papers. Then we’ll pull it all together to create an artistic collage piece.

Wondrous Wire

$ 185

In the first part of the day, I will demonstrate and teach basic wire sculpting using assorted gauges of annealed wire. This demonstration will include strategic thinking about how to sculpt in a way that allows the final sculpture to become nailed to a wooden substrate.

In the later part of the day, I will demonstrate and teach how to attach sculpted wire subjects onto wooden substrates. Mostly, we will use small nails and hammer for this. We will also have the opportunity to use a staple gun for those who want to try that.

Finally, we will add small strokes of acrylic paint to the wooden substrate and other elements as time allows including pencil, collage, and crochet.

TECHNIQUES
o Overview of tools and materials with principles of best practices in terms of handling wire and caring for tools
o Warm-up exercises to get our mindsets into new ways of thinking and seeing and feeling
o Demonstration and teaching of how to sculpt with annealed wire using pliers and wire cutters
o Discussion of concepts drawn from literature that have applications on how to overcome creative barriers during the creative process
o Discussion of lifelong journey involving how to make the art we make our own by reaching deep into who we are and allowing who we are to be expressed in our work
o Principles of solving problems and deciding when a work is finished or finished for the time being

SKILL LEVEL
All

I will bring small nails and grommets that you can use and have. I will also bring a staple gun and collage elements for you to use if you want to. Not everyone will want to use a staple gun but it is an option for certain wire sculptures. NO kit fee for this.

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

o WIRE: Black annealed wire in assorted gauges. I like using gauges 19, 22, and 26. Remember that the higher the gauge number, the thinner the wire. Please make sure you do not bring galvanized wire as that is difficult to sculpt with. Bring annealed wire.
o TOOLS: I use small and larger needle-nosed pliers, square nosed pliers, and wire cutters. If you have other sculpting tools in addition to that that you’d like to use, please bring them.
o WOOD PANELS: if you search on amazon, you can find wood panels (either flat or cradled) in assorted sizes. I like 5x7 inches, 8x10 inches and sometimes a square size like 6x6 inches. If you have access to plywood that you can have cut to size, please feel free to bring that. Sometimes if you go to a lumber store, you can either ask them to cut plywood to size or buy scraps that they have. Anywhere from a ¼ inch thick to a half inch thick is great. Cradled wood is also good and available online.
o ACRYLIC PAINTS in basic colors in whichever brands you like. Here are some of my favorite basic colors: white, black, beige, brown, blue, red, yellow, florescent pink
o Stabilo-All pencil (black)
o PAINTBRUSHES: One or two paintbrushes of any size. I use short flat Blick Scholastic brushes with white nylon brushes in either size 12 or 20.
o MISC: Hammer, paper towels, baby wipes, glue stick apron, container for water

Layering & Mark Making

$ 185

Mark making describes the different lines, dots, marks, patterns, and textures we create in an artwork. It can be loose and gestural or controlled and neat. It can apply to any material used on any surface: paint on canvas, ink or pencil on paper, etc. Artists use gesture to express their feeling and emotions in response to something seen or something felt – or gestural qualities can be used to create a purely abstract composition.
In this class, we will start our paintings with loose gestural marks and continue on with thin layers of fluid acrylics. Between the layers, we may choose to emphasize a shape with mor e marks, gradually building our unique abstract work.

Materials Fee $15 paid to instructor at beginning of class includes:

All Paints and Mediums
Other various media (pastels, charcoal, etc.)
Stencils, etc.

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

12” x 12” stretched canvas (nothing smaller)

Cabinet of Curiosities: An Artist's Book

$ 185

As creatives and artists, we love our collections of items that we use for art-making and as objects of inspiration. This artist's book was inspired by the 16th-century Cabinets of Curiosities, also known as Cabinets of Wonder, which were collections of notable objects. The objects that might be included were mostly from natural history, geology, ethnography, and archaeology, to name a few.
We will create a hard-cover book and a frame with compartments that will hold your personal collections for the cover of the book; the interior of the book will have four signatures. The book form and cover of the book will be completed in class. The book size is 6 inches wide by 8 inches high and has a 1-inch wide spine.

Materials Fee $25 cash  paid to instructor at beginning of class includes:

Canvas frame
Pre-cut Matt Board for the cover of the book
Pre-cut paper for the pages of the book
Materials to make the compartments
Papers to paint on for collage fodder
Collage materials
Matt medium
Gesso
Plaster of Paris
Yes paste

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

Scissors
UHU Glue stick & Krazy Glue with a brush
6-strand Embroidery floss: I used neutral colors
Book-binding thread
One large paper needle for binding
Bone folder and a small awl
Acrylic paint: whatever color you like. For this book, I used neutral colors: cream, tan, gray, white, and black. This will be for painting the frame of the cover.
An inexpensive big and small paintbrush or two
Exacto knife and a small cutting surface.
Pencil and favorite drawing tools:
½ a yard of a cotton print or a solid for covering the board boards and the spine.
Small collections of items: These are suggestions, and you do not need to bring all of these items. You decide what you want your “collection” to be, bits and pieces from nature, shells, sticks, pebbles, feathers, buttons, mica chips, small doll parts, metal pieces, old keys, small collage materials, paper & fabric scraps, small envelopes, tags, photos, tiny glass bottles, etc, etc. I also used some Tim Holtz tissue paper and old handwritten letters for collaging on the cover frame.
Binder clips to hold the frame to the book cover while drying
Paper clips to hold pages while binding
Paper towels, palette, and water container

Optional:
Apron & gloves
Blow dryer, light, and extension cord: I recommend the blow drier.

Ancient Faces - Experimental Painting

$ 185

This class is open to all levels including those who have never painted before. this is a great class for anyone who has struggled with or would simply like to explore new and expressed ways of creating faces. using fun simple techniqes we will carve imagery into - ez carve printing blocks, and experiment with mono printing. allowing us to print the imagery in a variety of ways. its more about the way we print the image then the complexity of the carving. in most cases the simpiler the better. Once we have experimented with carving and printing we will be ready to work the pieces into expressed artifacts. reshaping, and reworking the imagery in ways that give it an aged and weathered look. we will use text and symbols to add meaning and question within the work.

Using block printing as a base for creation will allow experimentation without the fear of mistakes. We will be able to repeat the imagery with ease by simply reprinting from our carvings. this repeated imagery will encourage us to experiment with new techniques like subtraction methods and compare the various printing and redefining methods against one another. the techniques are quick simple and imediate keeping things fun and moving forward.

These techniques and concepts work perfectly in connection with any of my other painting methods. So if youve taken a class with me previously these techniques will act as new tools which you can incorporate with any other concepts you have learned.

If you would like to learn more about my teaching style and my background you can check out the videos below

In this  video I explain my ideas and motivation while painting. if you ever wanted to take a class with me this video will give you a good idea of how I teach and think about painting.

Modern Hand Stitching

$ 185

Hand stitching is an ancient art that continues to evolve.  Spend time hand stitching that does not have to be stressful with lots of rules and perfect stitches. Get started on a fabric stitch book that you will want to add to as you discover new fibers and threads. As our time and lives become so busy we need to learn to slow down a little and create with no pressure.
The first part of the day we will learn a few straight stitches, but more than that we will learn to change the stitch lengths, layer the stitches, and then pull in all kinds of great fibers to add texture and color. The afternoon we will learn several more stitches and start putting it all together. It is amazing what you can do with just a few simple stitches on a piece of fabric. You will begin to see that a few stitches here and there may be just the thing needed to finish a piece, to take a good piece and make it great!
What could be more fun than just coming in, sitting down and stitching with other artists without having to gather all the supplies and prepare anything?

$25  kit payable to instructor at beginning of class will include:
prepared fabric to get started on your stitch book, needles, threads and fibers

All you need to bring is a thimble, glasses if you need them and yourself.

Dont Hold Back

$ 385

We’ve been conditioned to think art is about developing technique or natural born ability...but I say “bullshit!” I believe art is about tapping into the human soul and awakening the freedom to be comfortable with our own marks, our unique placement of shape, our use of color and then connecting the parts instinctively into a whole.

It is not enough to be an intuitive painter. Artists use the intuitive process beyond the mark to tell their stories, but first we must embrace the pieces of our untethered artistic soul.

Develop your artistic instincts. Trust the instinctual process of allowing what’s inside of you to come out by embracing the intuitive mark-making that is in your heart without any thought. Lean into the fear of letting go or expectations and allow your painting to evolve based on pure emotion. Embrace what you do and never question anything about it. There is no analysis, judgement, or do overs, in intuitive painting. There is no discipline or thought necessary. It is your gut, heart, and soul talking, not your brain.

Students will learn to work in acrylic layers across a large canvas as Donna shares tips for building a stronger working knowledge of color blending transitional layers while experimenting with tools, textures and shape. Begin to confidently use the surface as your narrative and paint what feels right...allow your story to unfold naturally.

Students will need the following supplies for class:
1 large canvas (30" or size comfortable for you to travel with)
Additional substrate (this could be paper, journal or additional canvas of any size. We will use this to create what I refer to as a “cast off” painting (if time allows) from the left over bits from the first painting.
studio easel
A variety of favorite fluid and heavy body acrylic paints
Marabu acrylic spray paint (i like black but any color is fun)
1 or 2 collage papers

small and large brushes
stencils
fun mark making tools (for example: palette knife, wedges, spatula, scrapers)
baby wipes
paper towels

Stumpwork Sea Anemone

$ 185

Stumpwork is a form of three dimensional hand embroidery that rose to popularity in 17th Century Europe. Used to decorate jewel boxes, framed art and other novelties, stumpwork usually feature pastoral vignettes of animals and plant life rendered in stitches that create texture and sculptural form. The subject for this project is the ‘flower of the sea’ - the Sea Anemone. Not actually flowers but animals, sea anemones are related to corals but resemble flowers and come in astounding colors. In their ‘open’ active state they do look like flowers with tentacles radiating from a center; when disturbed the anemone draws in its tentacles and resembles a rounded pillow, both forms are included in the project. In this class, students will make a small sampling of embroidered and beaded sea anemones, The tactile feel of these beaded and embroidered creatures has to be felt in person to appreciate – you can’t resist running your fingers over the exquisite texture. This is a handwork project; no sewing machine is needed for this class.

Skill Level: confident beginner and up (some hand embroidery experience is helpful but not necessary).

Take your art to the next level by incorporating these simple, easy techniques in your paintings, collage, journals, assemblages or just about any creative project! So jump in & get your hands dirty! No experience necessary, just come with an open mind, a playful heart & leave your critic and ideas of perfection at home!
You will leave with a diverse and intriguing body of work in deck form. You can use these individual pieces as such, as a guide for future projects, or bind with ribbon & enjoy.

Materials Fee $30 cash paid at beginning of class includes:

most of what you will need to create this deck...
Canvas substrate, sari ribbon, glaze, patina, plaster, transfer images, ephemera, stamps, stencils & a variety of tools to create texture.

Tin Angel

$ 185

The beauty and mystery of supernatural, winged, and unearthly creatures has captivated our collective imagination for eons, and artists throughout human history have interpreted this form in infinite variations, rendering so-called "angels" in every media available in order to express our deep wonder and fascinated awe we have for these beings unconstrained by atmosphere or gravity.
Essentially, this is an assemblage workshop. Students will start with a tin can, a porcelain doll head & hands, and a fancy glass lamp sconce, and create their very own "Tin Angel". The can itself can be any shape or size, rusty or not. Instruction revolves around bringing together dissimilar materials by transforming the appearance of the materials via torching/painting/altering them, striving for an artistically coherent appearance while learning about some solid construction materials and methods into the overall design of these sturdy litlle cherubs.
While this is a project-based course, there is a lot of room for individual expression (students are encouraged to bring along found objects and other materials, metal or otherwise, to decorate, embellish, and personalize their angel). Students will receive detailed instruction in many useful fabrication techniques, like rolling, engraving, punching, cutting, chemically altering, and drilling metal, a few handy hardware applications, some sculpting/modeling ideas, and seamlessly uniting objects with special paints, torches, tools, & other techniques.

For more info visit Black Sheep Artist Studio or email
thomasashmanart@ yahoo.com.

Materials Fee $40 paid at beginning of class includes:

detailed instruction booklet
copper or brass sheet metal for the wings
various hardware (nuts, blts, washers, allthread, etc.)
heavy metal chain
metallic surfacing paints
patinas
copper wire
two-part resin clay
clear coat spray (time permitting)

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

To successfully complete this project in one day, students must bring all of the following tools to class. Not having the right tools when you need them just slows everything down and can really annoy your classmates.

one tin can (no aluminum!)
porcelain doll head and hands
one fancy lamp sconce (the kind you see on those overhead fan lights. (Think: "skirt" for the angel -- and sized to fit with doll head and tin can)
shop shears or tin snips
Dremel, or other rotary tool with a grindstone, a couple sanding barrels, and a few cut-off wheels with the mandrel (a grindstone can be very helpful too)
heavy duty wire cutters
needle nose pliers
#2 Phillip's & flat head screwdrivers
safety glasses

Optional but very helpful tools, if they're not too much of a hassle:
clay sculpting tools
hammer and bench block
drill and bit set
heat gun
propane torch
nutdriver set
hand punch

Boro Deconstructed Collage (The Art of Tattered Rags)

$ 185

Boro is the Japanese word for tattered rags. From the 1600’s and even into the early 1900’s the Japanese farmers of the northern region of Honshu used this technique to repair and patch their clothes. Originally made from hemp the farmers were gradually able to get their hands on bits of cotton and finally silk. Every little scrap was precious and washed and saved until it was used to give their clothes longevity. These items of clothing were so used and worn and yet have such strength that you can’t help but admire them.
So gather up your bits of worn and beautiful fabric and let’s create a wall hanging that will speak of carefully preserved memories. A time when fabric was precious and hard to find and every little bit was worth saving.

Supply Fee  $50 payabale to instructor at beginning of class includes:
Everything you need to construct your Boro piece
Front , back and batting
Indigo dyed fabric by Ruth
Great  Japenese fabric that Ruth collects
Needles
Thread

Supply list:
if you have a few special fabric pieces to add bring them along
Thimble
Reading glasses if needed
Large scissors for cutting patches
Small scissors for trimming thread
Pins for securing patches
Ott light if desired for ease of seeing

Daily Creative Practice Journal

$ 185

What does your year of creative expression look like? Are the remnants here there and everywhere? Half-filled journals, countless projects started but still unfinished. Let’s build a journal together that celebrates your creative successes. Learn more about “Living IN” a journal as you create your very own Daily Creative Practice Journal.
The Daily Creative Practice Journal has been thoughtfully designed, tested and refined for over a decade now in my own art practice. The page size and number of spreads in each signature makes an ideal project to support a daily or weekly creative practice. The flexibility to add on and work with mixed media freely on the durable surface makes it an ideal journal to truly “Live In”.
Let’s face it, we love making books and journals but honestly “Living In” them remains aspirational. The Daily Creative Practice Journal is designed to carry with you to make the excuse of time and space magically non-relevant. It is the perfect container to use for participating in challenges and projects, to contain lessons for the many ongoing classes or courses we manage to sign up for. The Daily Creative Practice Journal is an adaptable and creative way to capture bits of your creative life visually.
In this workshop we will prepare 12 monthly signatures, front and back covers and a painted canvas carrier that transforms into a cover at year’s end. Your finished journal closed measures approximately 5x7.5 and is nearly 6 inches thick.

Instructor will share extras of many of her tools/stencils and supplies so bring what you have. She will also have several of her previous year’s journals to share for inspiration. You will leave class ready to live in your journal.

Fabric Treasure Box

$ 185

Please note this project needs a sewing machine with a free motion and a zig zag foot, the venue will have a few loaner machines to share. You may bring your own if you live locally.

These sweet little fabric boxes are easy to make in any size you desire and customize to fit a novelty print as the lid. In the class you will receive a pattern for three sizes but also the measurement formula to allow you to design future boxes to specific dimensions; you can even make sets of nesting boxes. Though you will make a basic fabric box in class, the instructor will cover ideas and tips on embellishing boxes. These make elegant gift boxes to present a gift, fill with chocolates or a special keepsake, or make the box itself a gift. They are remarkably durable too, I have been using one for my quilting safety pins for almost 20 years.

Skill Level: confident beginner and up

Please be courteous to others by arriving for class with the correct supplies. Contact me at 503-631-8806 or helene.m.knott@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Into the Spirit of Things-3 Day Alternative Book Making Experience

$ 555

In this 3-day mixed media workshop we’ll create papers, collage, stitch, draw, and paint. We’ll experiment with processes such as image transferring and mark making. Our days together will end with rich, one of a kind, personal books, filled with awe and wonderment, warm and tactile nests of gatherings to be cradled in our hands. Practices of alternative book-making cultivate insight into the nature of the creative process and its multiple relations to loss, mend, and change. Enriched by self trust, enthusiasm, calm, and acceptance, images, paper, paint, words, line work, and thread, entwine to make expressive, complex, personal, and sensual books. Dollies de los Muertos

$ 185

Take a walk on the dark side and join a Día de los Muertos (Day of the dead) celebration with the Black Sheep Artist! Observed annually throughout Mexico (and many other places too). This macabre holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support them on their spiritual journey. The unique food, activities, and art that surrounds the celebration is simply astonishing and I am totally inspired and enthralled by all of it! Drawing inspiration from the rich and colorful traditions of the holiday, as well as a bit of so-called "Goth" style, we will transform a "thrift store rescue” porcelain doll into a beautiful tribute to those who have gone before us. Don't be scared...it's just a doll.
     In this playful and energetic doll-altering workshop, students will learn: how to deconstruct a discarded porcelain doll down to its blank basic form and modify it to achieve more natural poses; a quick and easy way to dye different types of fabrics for "spooktacular" effects; how to paint a doll's face with traditional Mexican Day of the Dead designs (or something non-traditional); how to accessorize your ghost girl like a boss, and some light-hearted discussion on why it is important to distinguish between glam-goth-gorgeous and horrifying-Halloween-hokey. We’ll also build a decorative stand to pose and display your delightfully decomposing debutante…
Hey, just because you’re dead, doesn’t mean you can’t look fabulous, right?

Materials Fee $30 paid at beginning of class includes:

• DoD design example sheets
• instruction booklet
• wood base, dowel, and all hardware for stand
• all the black and white paint you can use
• a fancy new marabou wig for your dolly
• fabric dyes and darkeners
• glue, tape, wire
• terrifying trims & freaky fabrics
• beads, buttons & jewelry bits
• and lots of other creepy cool stuff and nonsense for your living dead girl!

To complete the project, students MUST come to class with the following supplies:

• one porcelain doll with the clothes still on it
• some good scissors
• a few different sizes paintbrushes including a very fine tipped one
• any of your favorite beads, buttons, old jewelry, fabrics & ribbons (in addition to your kits, we'll have a "share table" to swap other supplies you bring with your fellow students)
• any other spooky props or accessories you may have lying around.

It is a folk art, often used to repair or reinforce utilitarian objects, in contemporary times has been elevated to an art formin itself. Learn the Rules of Watercolor to Break Them

$ 185

A great number of artists believe that watercolor is the hardest of the painting mediums. They are wrong. There are tips, tricks and even rules that can ensure a better understanding of the tools of watercolor including paper, brushes, watercolor and even just water. In this workshop we will paint several smaller paintings focusing on specific watercolor techniques, including creating texture, wet-into-wet and the use of masking fluid. You will learn a lot and still have plenty of fun. Students of all levels of experience will create successful watercolor paintings and still enjoy this class.

Materials Fee $25 paid  to instructor at beginning of class includes:

• Written instructions and color photos of sample paintings

• Quality watercolor paper to create up to 6 paintings approx. 4” x 6”
• A sampling of Mijello Mission Gold artist quality watercolor paints used in these paintings
• Foam plate/pallet
• Moo eraser and kneaded eraser
• Masking Fluid, wax paper and other misc. supplies.

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

• Your usual painting supplies which should include at least 2 water containers, paper towels (or an old towel), a fine mist spray bottle for water.
• Brushes: You may use your regular watercolor brushes. I use Scharff , #310 White Nylon round brushes sizes #8 and #4 , a script liner and small wash brush (I will have Scharff brushes for purchase if you choose. White nylon brushes are typically easier for beginner painters. Your acrylic brushes will also work with watercolor. If in doubt, come to class and then you can shop at our store.
• Scissors
• A box of pop-up tissues is helpful (like an inexpensive brand of Kleenex from your hotel room)
• Pencil, ruler
• 2 small “boards” approx. 8” x 10” or larger to support your painting. My favorite support is corrugated plastic sign board. If you have one support about 12” x 18” that will be fine. There is no reason to cut it up. This will allow us to work on more than one painting at a time.
• Smaller metal pallet knife if you have one

Fireflies

$ 100

In this class we will be making Fireflies. A firefly is a decoration that's designed to catch rays of sunlight and reflect them as reflective patterns on nearby surfaces.
Fireflies can bring the energy of the sunlight into an area that is dark. They have been used by many to bring good Feng Shui into the home, workplace or outside. Fireflies take the positive energy of the sun and energize the area by spreading that light around in the form of rainbows and flecks of light. I use fireflies as gifts for friends and family who have lost a loved one. Hung in a tree the little dancing lights bring a feeling of a dancing spirit.

-Crystals
-Large variety of beads
-Mirrors
-Copper bell
-Waxed thread

Spirit Protectors

$ 365

I created my first series of Spirit Protectors during a particularly difficult time in my life and I can’t seem to stop. I absolutely love making these & I would love to share this with you!
On day one of this two day workshop, I will teach you my favorite surface design techniques on metal. We will explore leaf printing, faux etching, texturizing, metal transfers, and I will bring several products that will add solid color to your metal. We will prepare our wooden bases & create cool funky faces for our figures.
On the second day I will share my favorite tips & tricks to achieve balance, contrast & a powerful composition. We will cut up our tin, combine it with the metal that we made on the first day & I will show you how to make beautiful woven pieces out of metal strips. You will learn simple cold connection techniques, no glue here, as well as how to safely & properly operate tools.
Finally we will put it all together to create two figurative assemblages attached to a wooden base.
Each base is approximately 5”x7” which is used for the body only. After adding the head & legs your Spirit Protector can be as large as your imagination can take you!
You will leave with at least one finished piece, however most people complete 2 in this workshop.
No experience necessary, just plan to come & have a blast!

Materials Fee $25 cash paid at beginning of class includes:

All hardware, screws, nuts & bolts, nails & wire, paint, glaze, gel medium, clear coat, wax, hanging hardware & most tools.

If you have trouble finding anything, or if you have any questions, please contact me at least two weeks prior to class at leighannalight@gmail.com.

-2 pieces of wood approximately 4” x 5 1/2” x 1/2”
It can be any kind of wood as long as it is smooth and structurally sound. A rectangular shape is easier to work with than square. I will sometimes find used cutting boards at yard sales that work great for this.
***Please paint your wood with a coat of gesso or white paint.

-TIN SNIPS, Please bring these, which are best for cutting thin metal
http://www.bsueboutiques.com/product-p/tool07900.htm

-Small PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWDRIVER, PH-1

-PLIERS
-FINE TIP SHARPIE that works(!) & A RULER

-EAR PLUGS

-TIN, a variety of sizes & colors. Old, new, plain, printed. I often find cookie tins in thrift stores, antique stores, on ebay & garage sales. I also search online for “vintage tins”. Please bring at least 8 pieces, at least 7 x 6 INCHES, it can be cut flat ahead of time for travel. If you are cutting up whole tins at home, try using a can opener on the bottom of the tin, it makes it much easier to cut. This does not always work, it depends on the tin & sharpness of your can opener.
I will have a small amount of tin to share, Feel free to bring extra to share & trade.

-METAL
2 pieces of brass, 2 pieces of copper & 2 pieces of tin, thin enough to cut with tin snips,
4 x 6 OR larger. You must use must these specific metals or the process will not work, no aluminum please.
Thin brass or sheet metal is available at ACE Hardware, K&S brand...
TIN- http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3693093
BRASS- http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=106613126
COPPER- http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=20974156
K&S measures metal by thickness not gauge and it is listed in the product description before the size. A good thickness is .010. The thickness isn’t super important, you’ll need to be able to cut it with scissors.

-FOUND OBJECTS for arms & legs if you would like to use something other than metal. Please see sample photos for ideas.

-A CHARGED CORDLESS DRILL, CHARGER & 3 tiny drill bits, 1/16”. I will be bringing 2 drills but if it is a large class you might have to wait. We will be using the drill often during the workshop.

Glass Journal

$ 185

This is the workshop that started it all for me. My very first A&S workshop, and most popular class! Originally envisioned way back in '03, I have been teaching, practicing, improving, and fine tuning the design of this all-metal book binding since then, and I think I have it down (finally). We'll start with some heavy watercolor paper you can customize to make your book just perfect for writing, journaling, painting, scrapbooking, or whatever else you might want to do with your Glass Journal!

In this "form and function" workshop, students will begin by learning how to fabricate the entire metal book binding, completely "from scratch", give it a nice patina with some chemicals and a torch, and later, adorn it with chain, beads, charms, and other do-dads. Then, we'll attach the glass covers and some cool transparent photos. This unique binding and the skills you'll use to make it, once mastered, can be easily adapted to make book covers from many other materials and other mixed media art applications! Two transparent photos are included in your kit, but you are more than welcome to bring more personalized images for your covers if you wish. Just print out any 2 photos you like on transparency film at 4.25" sq. just don't trim them to size yet! Beveled glass covers come pre-drilled in your kit, due to time constraints of this one day workshop, but feel free to bring your own Dremel tool and a 1/8" diamond drill bit if you want to try your hand at drilling glass in class.
Skills that will be covered in the workshop include my technique for drilling glass, some metal fabrication skills, the alteration of metal with torches and patinas, some basic bookbinding terminology, using various small hand tools & tool safety, and tons of fun too!

Materials Fee $45 paid at beginning of class includes:

Fully illustrated instruction booklet
Copper clad "plumber's tape"
Machine screws, nuts, and washers
Copper and/or brass wire
2 Vintage photo transparencies (you'll have options - usually a cute kid or pretty lady)
2 pre-drilled 4" beveled glass squares
Chain
Some random beads & pins
Patina
Clear coat spray

To complete the project, students MUST come to class with the following supplies:

16 pieces of 90# watercolor paper (either hot press/cold press, but it looks best hand torn). Each sheet should measure 3.75" x 7.5" (We will have time to give your paper a quick paint wash to give it some color, but if you like, please feel free to paint, stamp, collage, dye, color, or otherwise decorate your paper before you attend, just use lighter colors, and a not-too-busy design on at least two of the sheets, so the transparent images show up well on the front and back of the book.)

TOOLS
Tin Snips
Phillips screwdriver
Small disposable paint brush
Scissors/ruler/pencil
Chain nose pliers
Round nose pliers
Wire cutters
5/16" nutdriver, wrench, or socket

OPTIONAL
Torch w/fuel canister
Dremel tool or drill with 1/8" Glastar diamond drill bit and your sanding, grinding and cutting accessories

6 x 6

$ 185

I'll help you take the guesswork out of the blank canvas with these 6 easy-yet-dynamic works of art. These 6 paintings can be created on any surface--canvas, wood, art journal, etc. and with the materials that you already have in your art stash. You will go from feeling uninspired and stuck, to feeling full of creativity and inspiration by the end of class. We will cover various techniques that can be mixed and matched on each canvas. We'll explore: my favorite art materials and how to use them, mark-making, print-making, collage techniques, sketching/drawing basics, adding texture, composition, and basic color theory. We'll work on all 6 canvases at a time, jumping around and using them as a way to keep our flow, keep inspired, and use them each as jumping-off points to the next canvas. We'll work fast and loose at first, as we free up our creative minds, and then make "smaller," more precise moves as we finish up each canvas. I like to use the rainbow as my palette, but you can also create in your own preferred color palette!

Materials Fee $20 paid at beginning of class includes:

Collage paper pack
Use of shared materials: Acrylic paint, acrylic ink, spray ink, stencils, stamps, stamp ink, oil pastels, texture plates, brushes, mark-making tools, printmaking tools, watercolor paper, collage images
