This is an open level class as there is plenty to be learned by someone who has never painted before or those who are full time artists and teachers. A mix of demonstration, lecture and hands on painting will introduce students to my ideas, techniques and the concepts that motivate my work. In this mixed-media painting class you will learn to create paintings that emerge from an abstract base of markings, colors, line, and shape to form expressive and organic creations. Students will learn painting and mark making techniques that will encourage imagery and connection to their work. Through a series of painting exercises, you will explore and express your ideas by imagining what could be created from abstraction rather than confining your ideas to predetermined outcomes. Within the process we will create narrative dialogue by noting what we see and feel in our work . Through the practice of subtractive painting we will remove the parts that are no longer relevant or keep us trapped from progress. This teaches us choice and freedom to change direction in our work. We continually build layers within our paintings combining fragments of passed ideas with the new until we arrive at a feeling of completion . Through this engagement we learn to experiment, take risks, re associate our work from perspectives unconfined by our expectations. This allows us to see things clearly and move to a more expressed and personal engagement when painting. Using simple materials and techniques you will be free to express yourself within your paintings in new ways. finding yourself as a painter from the raw base of art, learning your personal likes dislikes. Connecting you to your practice and imagery from a position of experimentation and instinct. Teaching you to imagine the unimaginable.
For me painting is an experience in every way, i love the feeling of each If you would like to learn more about my teaching style and my background you can check out the videos below

Creative people love to surround themselves and draw inspiration from our stash of treasures, and sometimes “Our Treasures” are simple recycled materials. Inspiration for this book comes from my collection of small recycled boxes and packaging I could not bring myself to throw away. Using recycled materials you will transform the ordinary into something extraordinary and unique to your personal expression. Additionally, you can utilize other collage materials and ephemera you may have in your stash. First, we will prepare the packaging & small boxes for the mixed media layering process that will become the cover and pages of your book. We will then use several mixed media techniques, painting, drawing, stenciling, stamps and more to create the layers and develop a color palette and theme for your artist book. We play around with the different sizes of pages that create another level of layering and bind the book in class. The book form will be completed in class, and then you can continue adding to embellish at your own pace. Students can email me at: padgettroxanne3@gmail.com
Materials Fee $10 cash paid to instructor at beginning of class includes:

NOTE: Sewing machine experience required. If you are traveling, we will have 5 machines available to share. Please contact glenny@artandsoulretreat.com if you live locally, and can bring your machine so we can reserve the five for others! In Japanese Gardens, the stonework plays a substantial role in the design. This small quilt, is a celebration of stone, the emphasis is on the path not the garden that surrounds it. In this class you will create your own unique Zen Path or work from a pattern designed by the instructor. The quilts will be small - around 8”-10” wide and about 20”–25” long; reminiscent of a Japanese scroll in shape and form. They need not be symmetrical. The stones will be appliquéd by hand, machine or fused as per your preference and some stones can be created in dimensional appliqué if you wish. If the idea of Wabi Sabi stone colors does not appeal to you, the stones can be rendered in surrealistic bright colors or floral themed prints. The finished path can be embellished with a few 3-D blossoms or leaves that have drifted onto it. Methods for creating 3-D botanical features will be demonstrated in class. There will be kits available for the cobblestones ($10) if your project incorporates them as well as a variety of stonework and gravel fabrics suitable for the pathway available for purchase or you can bring your own fabrics as outlined below. Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
• Fabrics: As the size of the quilt you are making will vary, it is difficult to predict how much yardage and how many fabrics will be necessary until after you draft your design but ? yard should be adequate for a small to medium sized pathway; look for fabrics with a ‘sandy’, gravelly’ or ‘mossy’ texture for this base. Bring more than one choice if you can, it’s better to have more choices than you need than not enough. You will also need fabrics selected for the stones, you can choose just one fabric print for all of them or use a variety for more interest, and even leftover scraps from other projects will do. Look for fabrics with a rough stone like texture – batiks, hand dyes and/or Northcott’s Stonehenge line are perfect choices. You can add 3-D blossoms or leaves to embellish your quilt; however, it may be easier to pick colors/textures for these after your path is finished, batiks in flower or leaf colors would be suitable. One option you might choose is to find a large scale botanical print and fussy-cut flowers ir leaves from it. In class you will learn a few different ways you might embellish your pathway with botanical elements. Pre-wash all fabrics if you are planning on a fusible technique.

This class is open to all levels including those who have never painted before. this is a great class for anyone who has struggled with or would simply like to explore new and expressed ways of creating faces. using fun simple techniqes we will carve imagery into - ez carve printing blocks, and experiment with mono printing. allowing us to print the imagery in a variety of ways. its more about the way we print the image then the complexity of the carving. in most cases the simpiler the better. Once we have experimented with carving and printing we will be ready to work the pieces into expressed artifacts. reshaping, and reworking the imagery in ways that give it an aged and weathered look. we will use text and symbols to add meaning and question within the work. Using block printing as a base for creation will allow experimentation without the fear of mistakes. We will be able to repeat the imagery with ease by simply reprinting from our carvings. this repeated imagery will encourage us to experiment with new techniques like subtraction methods and compare the various printing and redefining methods against one another. the techniques are quick simple and imediate keeping things fun and moving forward. These techniques and concepts work perfectly in connection with any of my other painting methods. So if youve taken a class with me previously these techniques will act as new tools which you can incorporate with any other concepts you have learned. If you would like to learn more about my teaching style and my background you can check out the videos below In this video I explain my ideas and motivation while painting. if you ever wanted to take a class with me this video will give you a good idea of how I teach and think about painting. https://www.facebook.com/521281040/videos/10158785508571041/ This 6 minute video shows me painting a 8x12 ft mural from start to finish in time lapse with text explaining my ideas while creating the piece to see over 3000 examples of my work and to find out more check out my site - www.jessereno.com Kit fee of $20 paid to instructor at beginning of class includes:

I will start out demonstrating drawing a bird onto the watercolor paper. Once the drawing is complete, the process of painting begins. We will start from light to dark. I will demonstrate the relationship between the darker and lighter values which begin to communicate the form and texture of our bird. The goal is to get lost in the relaxing, fluid nature of watercolor painting…remember, we are painting a WHIMSY BIRD! Once we allow the base colors to dry, with a smaller brush, we will start to paint in the darker details on the wings, legs and eye. Every student will leave with a finished Whimsy Bird on 140lb Watercolor Paper.
Students of every experience level are welcome! Materials Fee $25 paid at beginning of class includes:

If you’re like most of us who love and work with fabric, you have an abundance of scraps; small, random, pieces of fabric too small to do much of anything with but also, too big to throw away. I’ll begin the class by share my system for organizing and storing scraps. Once you have tamed the chaos the fun can begin. It’s time to play with scissors - no running, of course! You will begin by cutting your scraps into random shapes and sizes. Then, you will layer shapes, slightly overlapping each piece as you go, to create a pleasing play of color and contrast. This process is wonderfully fun and forgiving. You can arrange and rearrange your scraps multiple times until your inner critic quiets and you are pleased with your results. Using scraps this way is environmentally conscious, because you are repurposing fabric that might otherwise go to waste. It is also a celebration of your unique creative vision. When all the scraps been used, Voila! You have created new “whole cloth” fabric from your pile of scraps. Imagine the joy of repurposing neglected fabrics, preserving cherished memories, and creating something truly unique. Witness the magic as colors and patterns harmonize, and memories come to life in a tapestry of personal significance. This class goes beyond fabric art; it can be a journey of rediscovery and appreciation for the stories woven into each scrap. The resulting recycled fabric, now bursting with new possibilities, can be transformed into anything you desire. Whether you envision a heart applique or another unique creation, the choice is yours. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the potential of your scraps and the art of repurposing. Materials Fee $20 paid at beginning of class includes:

Stumpwork is a form of three dimensional hand embroidery that rose to popularity in 17th Century Europe. Used to decorate jewel boxes, framed art and other novelties, stumpwork usually feature pastoral vignettes of animals and plant life rendered in stitches that create texture and sculptural form. The subject for this project is the ‘flower of the sea’ - the Sea Anemone. Not actually flowers but animals, sea anemones are related to corals but resemble flowers and come in astounding colors. In their ‘open’ active state they do look like flowers with tentacles radiating from a center; when disturbed the anemone draws in its tentacles and resembles a rounded pillow, both forms are included in the project. In this class, students will make a small sampling of embroidered and beaded sea anemones, The tactile feel of these beaded and embroidered creatures has to be felt in person to appreciate – you can’t resist running your fingers over the exquisite texture. This is a handwork project; no sewing machine is needed for this class. Skill Level: confident beginner and up (some hand embroidery experience is helpful but not necessary).

We all learned the primary colors back in kindergarten. And we learned to mix them to make secondary colors. But if you do this with a basic primary mix, you often get ugly. In this workshop you’ll learn about how different primary mixes work and what kind of secondary colors they make, What happens when you mix Quinacridone Magenta with Hansa yellow, etc. ? It’s an eye opener!!! What are Modern colors and what are Mineral colors and how do they act differently in our paintings. We’ll make some color wheels and learn to make some of our favorite colors. This class will save you money and space, cause you won’t need to buy every color under the sun, you will know how to make them! And even though it’s science and analyzing stuff – we’ll keep it fun and still learn a lot!

Having just the right fabric to work with makes your fabric collage, quilt or sewing project so much more fun! But finding that perfect piece of fabric isn’t always easy. Earlier in my career, I dyed my fabric with fiber reactive dyes and I loved the process of seeing the dye move through the fabric and create rich saturated color. It was easy to create the perfect fabric. But fiber reactive dyes have a down side. They are easily airborne and toxic in nature. Today I work from a small studio in my home and both safety and space considerations rule out the use of dye. When looking for an alternative, I discovered acrylics designed to work specifically with fabric; acrylic inks, fluid, blocks and pencils. They are a wonderful substitute for dye. In this class you will be coloring cotton fabric using acrylics that are perfectly suited to the challenge. You will explore a variety of techniques to create both patterned, solid, and batik-like fabric. You will create fabric bundles in 2 analogous colorways of your choice and you will leave class with a variety of related fabrics in a cohesive palette ready for your next project. You will love working with the one-of-a-kind fabrics you have created. It’s a great way to elevate any project. Materials Fee $25 paid at beginning of class includes:

In this 3-day mixed media workshop we’ll create papers, collage, stitch, draw, and paint. We’ll experiment with processes such as image transferring and mark making. Once we make our individual pieces we’ll make book signatures out of them and bind them together, instinctually, to make our little books, to journal in or leave as is. Our days together will end with rich, one of a kind, personal books, filled with awe and wonderment, warm and tactile nests of gatherings to be cradled in our hands. Practices of alternative book-making cultivate insight into the nature of the creative process and its multiple relations to loss, mend, and change. Enriched by self trust, enthusiasm, calm, and acceptance, images, paper, paint, words, line work, and thread, entwine to make expressive, complex, personal, and sensual books. Take a walk on the dark side and join a Día de los Muertos (Day of the dead) celebration with the Black Sheep Artist! Observed annually throughout Mexico (and many other places too). This macabre holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support them on their spiritual journey. The unique food, activities, and art that surrounds the celebration is simply astonishing and I am totally inspired and enthralled by all of it! Drawing inspiration from the rich and colorful traditions of the holiday, as well as a bit of so-called "Goth" style, we will transform a "thrift store rescue” porcelain doll into a beautiful tribute to those who have gone before us. Don't be scared...it's just a doll. Materials Fee $30 paid at beginning of class includes:
• DoD design example sheets To complete the project, students MUST come to class with the following supplies:
• one porcelain doll with the clothes still on it

Let’s get this collage paper party started! I’ll show you all my favorite materials and go-to techniques that I use to create bright, bold, luscious collage paper! These collage papers are PERFECT for use in your art journals, mixed media collage canvases, decoupage paper, and other mixed media projects. We’ll start with creative mark making using oil pastels and stamping found items into acrylic paint. I’ll show you the tricks for using the right colors to create contrast and the tips to avoid muddy colors. We’ll use spray inks and acrylic paint through stencils, and use rubbing plates and stamps to create beautiful resists. But we’re not done yet! We’ll also use the gelli plate to create gorgeous textures and patterns that we will also pile more fun layers onto! I’ll also show you some very simple techniques with my favorite of all time art supply: the paint pen! They truly add that finishing touch and really are the life of the party! In this class, we'll focus mainly on the process and learning a ton of techniques but we'll also have a little time at the end to play with our collage paper in our art journals!

In this class you will create a personal, one-of-a-kind, fabric collage. I will guide you step by step through the process of fine tuning your composition and selecting your color palette. Next you will select a range of fabrics that express your personal vision. I will offer you as little or as much guidance as you want as you move through this process. Once you have assembled your fabrics you will prepare them for collaging by applying a thin layer of iron on adhesive to the wrong side of the fabric. This readies them for layering using a raw edge applique technique. Now the real fun begins! You get to play with scissors, no running of course! Cutting shapes from your fabric you can be wildly intuitive, for a loose expressionistic effect or you can be precise, relying more heavily on patterned cuts for a more detailed and realistic look. When I first began exploring fabric collage and applique, I had many frustrating experiences cutting fabric with the wrong side of the fabric facing up. I kept cutting the design in reverse. Aargh! Finally, I developed a method of creating my own pattern pieces that virtually eliminates this problem. It is quick, easy, and almost foolproof. Once you learn my system, you’ll never worry about cutting a design in reverse again. As you continue to add layers of fabric you are free to play. You can arrange shapes, rearrange shapes, and move them around again until your inner critic finally goes “Yes! I’ve nailed it”. My goal is for you will leave class with a finished collage. You can leave it as is or add an additional layer of detail and texture with free motion sketch stitching or add additional color with acrylics. Either way, you will have an original work of fabric art that can be mounted to hang on the wall, turned into a pillow, or incorporated into any sewing project. Materials Fee $25 paid at beginning of class includes:

These three dimensional leaves look amazingly realistic. Depending on the stabilizer used, they can be dense and stable enough to use as a pendant or earrings, or ruffled and frilled like a fresh leaf. They are fun and fairly easy to make. Students will receive a design sheet with several varieties of leaves to make. After the stitchery is completed, the leaves can be enhanced with colored pencils to make then more realistic. Please note this project needs a sewing machine with a free motion and a zig zag foot, the venue will have a few loaner machines to share. You may bring your own if you live locally.
Skill Level: confident beginner and up Materials Fee $15 cash paid at beginning of class includes: Two 8” squares of fabric for one leaf, freezer paper, stabilizer, 2 coordinated colors of thread, and use of the instructor’s colored pencils. Supplies Needed to bring for Class:

This is the workshop that started it all for me. My very first A&S workshop, and most popular class! Originally envisioned way back in '03, I have been teaching, practicing, improving, and fine tuning the design of this all-metal book binding since then, and I think I have it down (finally). We'll start with some heavy watercolor paper you can customize to make your book just perfect for writing, journaling, painting, scrapbooking, or whatever else you might want to do with your Glass Journal!
In this "form and function" workshop, students will begin by learning how to fabricate the entire metal book binding, completely "from scratch", give it a nice patina with some chemicals and a torch, and later, adorn it with chain, beads, charms, and other do-dads. Then, we'll attach the glass covers and some cool transparent photos. This unique binding and the skills you'll use to make it, once mastered, can be easily adapted to make book covers from many other materials and other mixed media art applications! Two transparent photos are included in your kit, but you are more than welcome to bring more personalized images for your covers if you wish. Just print out any 2 photos you like on transparency film at 4.25" sq. just don't trim them to size yet! Beveled glass covers come pre-drilled in your kit, due to time constraints of this one day workshop, but feel free to bring your own Dremel tool and a 1/8" diamond drill bit if you want to try your hand at drilling glass in class. Materials Fee $45 paid at beginning of class includes:
Fully illustrated instruction booklet To complete the project, students MUST come to class with the following supplies: 16 pieces of 90# watercolor paper (either hot press/cold press, but it looks best hand torn). Each sheet should measure 3.75" x 7.5" (We will have time to give your paper a quick paint wash to give it some color, but if you like, please feel free to paint, stamp, collage, dye, color, or otherwise decorate your paper before you attend, just use lighter colors, and a not-too-busy design on at least two of the sheets, so the transparent images show up well on the front and back of the book.)

I'll help you take the guesswork out of the blank canvas with these 6 easy-yet-dynamic works of art. These 6 paintings can be created on any surface--canvas, wood, art journal, etc. and with the materials that you already have in your art stash. You will go from feeling uninspired and stuck, to feeling full of creativity and inspiration by the end of class. We will cover various techniques that can be mixed and matched on each canvas. We'll explore: my favorite art materials and how to use them, mark-making, print-making, collage techniques, sketching/drawing basics, adding texture, composition, and basic color theory. We'll work on all 6 canvases at a time, jumping around and using them as a way to keep our flow, keep inspired, and use them each as jumping-off points to the next canvas. We'll work fast and loose at first, as we free up our creative minds, and then make "smaller," more precise moves as we finish up each canvas. I like to use the rainbow as my palette, but you can also create in your own preferred color palette! Materials Fee $20 paid at beginning of class includes:
Collage paper pack Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
*Six 6x6" wood panels (can be any thickness--I like using the cradled wood panels) Please gesso them beforehand.

Please note this project needs a sewing machine with a free motion and a zig zag foot, the venue will have a few loaner machines to share. You may bring your own if you live locally. Let me confess, I do not have a background in quilting. I failed 8th grade home economics because I couldn’t master the straight line. That has not, however, dampened my love of fabric. When I began making fabric collages it was clear I would have to learn free motion stitching. To say I was intimidated is an understatement. Luckily for me, I do not aspire to traditional, precise lines. I want to make lines that are gestural, full of movement and whimsy. I want my lines to add to the story. Once I learned to relax into the process, I discovered that I actually love this part of fabric collage. I discovered there is, almost without exception, no wrong line. My favorite stitched lines have the immediacy and energy of a sketch, which means they are not “perfect.” In this class you will learn how to set up your machine for free motion stitching. You will learn which machine feet and needles to use and I’ll share tricks and techniques to make your free motion stitching more successful and stress-free. Most importantly, you will learn to embrace the unexpected stitch. You will leave class more confident, adventurous, and empowered to adventure into the world of free motion stitching. This is a hands-on class and you will spend much of the day at the machine stitching. You will design and practice simple repeat patterns and you will stitch a detailed project ‘sketch’ that can be finished with acrylic inks or raw edge applique. Materials Fee $25 paid at beginning of class includes:
