Just imagine the whimsical English Cottage Bird house you could take home. We will turn a plain hard Kentucky gourd into a patio treasure for you. Join me by painting with oodles of acrylic colors to design your home for any happy bird.
You will be greeted in class with a white primed southern kettle gourd. This fellow will be approximately, 8-10 inch tall fat and has taken a full year to grow from a seed, cure in the winter weather to sitting in front of you in class Our day will be filled with step by step instructions, to create the brick walls, roof, windows, door and flowers. Additional information:
This information is not meant to discourage or frighten anyone who wants to work with gourds. I prepare your gourd and I take specific precautions in cleaning the gourds. I wear a HEPA filter mask when I drill and clean the inside of the gourd. I use a brass wire brush on a drill and clean out all the mummified insides and seeds. I use a shop vac to vacuum and power blow out remaining dust. The gourds then get a soaking in a bleach water and then left to dry. They are then sprayed on inside with a fine mist of outdoor varnish sealer. This has never deterred a bird from renting one of my bird houses.
**Caution: the gourd birdhouses are not meant to be a child’s toy.
