The making of marks is the fundamental building block of all artwork from the first handprints on cave walls to the strokes of paint that created Van Gogh’s Starry Starry Night. Mark making is the beginning exploration in a work of art all the way through to the last finishing touches. Mark making in a dance between our hands, our eyes and the way we see. We will be exploring a WIDE range of techniques for making marks. Some familiar and some unconventional. Besides traditional materials for marks, we will explore using stitches, collage, staplers, and solder irons as tools. Through exercises, we will explore the essential act of learning to see as an artist. Mark making is a great tool for exploring basic concepts of composition. Mark making is what makes abstract art. However, the marks learned can be incorporated into collage, visual journaling, more traditional drawing or painting, and fiber art.
This a great class for those traveling as the materials are lightweight and most likely things you already own.
I am a strong proponent of experimentation and light-heartedness in making art. My job is not to tell you “how to make art” but to share techniques and support you in finding your unique creative voice.
